PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This week is part of the world’s Greatest Meal to raise funds for the eradication of Polio. Our club goal is to raise $1,000 and last night we would have raised a total of $480; $140 from raffles, $120 in fines, Tony S and Michael I have both donated their annual Rotary Foundation to Polio ($110 @). Previously we have raised $300, giving us a total of $780. We would need another $220, any generous donors please contact me. I would sincerely wish to thanks Marion J and Jenny H for their hard work in making last night a successful and joyous night. We were also fortunate to have District Chair for Polio, Brian Pearson, Vicki Nicholl and Uwe Seifert of Broadbeach Rotary Club with us. I am pleased to inform everyone that Tony P has almost complete the digital database and have organised the first badge of receipts. We are inviting RAWCS Northern district Chair Ailsa Hay for a meeting and to visit our club. I envisage we will be in operation very soon. Special acknowledgement to Tony P’s great work. Next week is a very special evening, we will be celebrating Rotary’s 109 Birthday and has invited PDG Ian and PDG Heather Yarker. We will also be inducting our new club member Allan Thompson and Helen Moorfoot. It would be great to invite your partner for this celebration. Lastly, please remember to register for district conference

FEBRUARY IS WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH

YOUTH PROGRAMMES

The Rotary Club of Copenhagen in Denmark initiated the first youth exchange in Europe in 1929. Since

then, the programme has spread worldwide and currently, about 9000 students go out each year. They are

sponsored by Rotary Clubs for a year-long stay, hosted by multiple families.

Southport Rotary Club has sponsored many youth exchange students over the years and several host

families are still in touch with their students in various parts of the world.

To-day about 10 students are sent and received by our district each year.

The Interact Club at St Stephen’s College Coomera has visited the New Hope school, established by the

Rotary Club of Ashmore in a poor area of Siem Reap. In their 3 weeks, these students helped at the school,

gave their computers to the school and visited places of interest. The College maintains an interest in New

Hope School.

Both these programmes have greatly increased world understanding, especially for those who participated.

The assembled meeting show how close we are to ending polio

Thoughts for the week Some of our more senior members reckon that getting lucky, now, is only having to go to the loo three

times a night.

I asked one member if he bought anything for his wife for Valentines Day.

He replied, much to my surprise , that he bought her a belt and a bag.

I said how kind he was, and I hope his wife appreciated the thought.

“So do I,” he replied, “and I hope the vacuum cleaner will work better now.”

Mary woke up with a fright and told her husband she dreamt that he gave her a pearl necklace for

Valentines Day. “ What can it mean,” she asked.

“ You will know tonight,” replied the husband.

That evening he gave her a carefully wrapped package containing a book entitled “The Meaning of

Dreams”.

I used to drink all brands of beer. Now, I am older Budweiser! Watson came excitedly to Sherlock Holmes place and told him his dog had swallowed his ring. Sherlock told Watson "Don't worry. He will pass it eventually". Watson replies "Thank you very much, Sherlock". Sherlock says to Watson."It's alimentary, my dear Watson A skeleton walks down empty Main Street. Suddenly he sees another skeleton carrying a gravestone. "Hey, what are you doing?” the other skeleton answers "Just strolling", "Why do have the gravestone, buddy?", "Because I always want to have some ID A guy was meeting a friend in a bar, and as he walked in he noticed two pretty girls looking at him. He heard one girl say to the other; “Nine.” Feeling pleased with himself, he swaggered over to his buddy at the bar and told him that the girl in the corner had just rated him a nine out of ten. “Sorry to spoil your evening,” said his friend, “but when I walked in they were speaking German.”
