President’s Message Joe Crostic Fellow Kiwanians: First and foremost, we are a service club. We provide thousands of hours of service to the children and seniors in our community. BUT, we are also a club that is GENEROUS to those in need. At our two November meetings, we conducted a fund-raising effort to support our local Food Pantry. We had a terrific response at our first meeting and collected $470. But our members did not stop there! We collected an incredible additional $490 at our second meeting. Wow, $960 donated by our members to help those in our county who are in need of a basic need – food! I am very proud of our club and I look forward to presenting a check to the Food Pantry in December on your behalf. We expect to make that presentation at our meeting on December 3. Please try to be there to help celebrate this generous achievement. Thanks to our Club Secretary, Barbara Gilhully, for chairing this fund-raising drive. At our November 19 meeting, our members got to experience a most enthusiastic speaker in Wendy Jones. Many of us know Wendy from volunteering at Southport Elementary School, where Wendy is one of the physical education teachers. Her passion for serving children through her Power Walking Ministries was evident and infectious. Remember that we will be helping Wendy and Donna Michaux (who spoke to our club in June about sea turtles) during the month of January, as First Tee coaches and PE testing assistants. Contact Don Wilson to volunteer. I had my first experience with Teen Court during November. What a great job that Byron Price, John Kelso and so many others have done to develop and support this program with CIS! You don’t need to have a legal background to participate in this volunteer effort which takes place monthly at the Brunswick County Courthouse. The students were great to work with and observe as they filled all the roles in a courtroom except that of judge. They clearly took their responsibilities very seriously and are all learning skills which will benefit them as they continue on in education and life. I will be back, and I invite our members who have not previously volunteered for Teen Court to join me and our cadre of dedicated volunteers. I am excited that our fiscal year has gotten off to such a great start. Our members are the best and we welcomed Katie Solecki as a new member in November; and, we were joined by several potential members at our meetings in November. Let’s all SHARE Kiwanis with our service-minded friends and neighbors and invite them to our meetings and to join our club. With more members, we can do even more service! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. To our non-Christian members and friends, I also wish you the happiest of holidays during this festive time of year.

As mentioned on the first page, our very own Dick Hart explained the Wreaths across America program at the November 5, 2015 meeting. The project places wreaths on veterans’ graves. Pictures of last year’s ceremony at Wilmington National Ceremony follow the meeting notes. This year’s wreath-laying ceremony will occur December 12 at noon.
On November 19, 2015, Wendy Jones from Southport Elementary School described the Power Walking Ministries program which grew from a 2007 Bible study group looking to make a difference. The group provides sneakers, socks and Christian literature to Brunswick County students. The program started at Southport Elementary School, gradually adding South Brunswick Middle and High Schools, as well as Bolivia Elementary. For 2015 they will cover 13 Brunswick County schools. Eventually they hope to reach all 19 schools and Hope Harbor.

Last year they provided 66 pairs with socks and Christian literature. So far this year they have provided 94 pairs, at a cost of $3216. They used to find new shoes at $31 per pair, but the addition of high schoolers has increased the average cost to $34. Matthews Ministry helps deliver the shoes, but guidance counsellors and teachers suggest needs based recipients. Wendy’s group finds out what size, color and style the children want and asks whether the parents object to receiving Christian literature. So far, nobody has rejected the books. The group works with a local shoe seller to obtain the best price, but need contacts with manufacturers or large distributors. If you have such contacts, please tell Wendy. As many of you know, Wendy has co-taught P.E. for the last 23 years at Southport Elementary School with Donna Michaux. They have been recognized as having one of the Top 10 Elementary School Physical Education Program in N.C. and won the National Healthy Active School Award in October where they were ranked one of the Healthiest and Active Schools in America. At the same meeting, Pete Berg discussed how he wants to increase fund-raising so that we could give scholarships larger than $1000 to help deserving students meet rising college costs.

Old Business: Project Eliminate - Joe Crostic reported the current update for Project Eliminate. A total of $58,503 has been donated to Project Eliminate: from member gifts $34,106, from Club gifts $15,106 and gifts from others $3,720. Joe Crostic reported that Larry Trainor will chair the 2016 Plant Sales program. SouthportOpoly – Pete Berg reported the project is on schedule and close to completion. Pete presented and reviewed a report on the status of the project: participants, patrons, member orders and a financial summary. Projected net proceeds after all games ordered are sold are $8,445. Strategic Plan – Patrick Boyce reviewed a summary of the committee meeting on October 23, 2015. Subjects addressed were: broader community assessment, conduct member surveys, encourage member involvement, and evaluate fundraising activities. Aktion Club Consideration – Joe Crostic stressed the need to determine the number of people who might benefit from such an interagency program. New Business: Optional Club Crime and Accident Insurance – Peg McDonald reviewed the coverages. Crime covers members and Accident covers members, volunteers and service programs. The motion to not participate in either program was APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY because the board determined there is not a significant risk to the club for what each policy covers. Application submitted by Kathleen Solecki (Sponsor: Peg McDonald) was APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY. The motion to elect Joe Crostic and Pat Boyce as delegates to the District Mid-year Conference (February 5-7, 2015) was APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY. The motion to approve an amended new member application submitted by Barbara Gilhuly was APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY. The amended application will include the requirement for Youth Protection Guidelines Training. Joe Crostic reviewed the criteria for the District Club Excellence Award. Joe Crostic presented the Allocation of International and District Conference Budget: Distict Mid-year (2 delegates, budget $600), Annual (3 delegates, budget $1,200) International (2 delegates, budget $1,200) A motion to approve the allocations was APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY. Pat Boyce presented a review of Club service hours by individuals. Suggestions for follow up were presented. It was the consensus of the Board that the dress code for those participating in new member inductions be business casual.

Les Tubb, Brunswick County Schools Superintendent, accompanied Dick Hart to the Listening Post at South Brunswick Middle School. Les found the time worthwhile and informative. He settled in and engaged the students as if he were teaching again. Many teachers stopped by, a bit surprised, to see Les talking to the students. Many students also expressed surprise that the superintendent of school would take the time to do this. Les has agreed to come back next year
and will work to have a School Board member do the same.

of its goal, having saved over 32,500 lives! Thanks again to all our donors and supporters for making this possible. It is not too late to make a new or increased tax-deductible contribution to support the Eliminate Project. Our new International President, Sue Petrisin, has challenged us all to “Save a baby a day!” The cost to do that for a year would be $657 (i.e., 365 days multiplied by $1.80 per series of immunizations). KI has recognized contribution levels for gifts of $300, $625, $1,000, $1,250 and $1,500. But gifts in any amount will help save lives. An estimated 49,000 newborns still die every year from tetanus. While that is a 15% drop since 2010, it is still too many deaths from a completely preventable disease! Can you help? Gift and Pledge forms are available at all meetings and from Joe Crostic at any time.

For those who want to mentor youth in an actual courtroom environment, please volunteer for Teen Court or a Peer Court. You can serve as a prosecuting or defense attorney mentor or jury monitor. Jury monitoring requires no previous legal experience, rather ensuring the juries follow instructions. Generally, only Teen Court attorney monitors need to have legal backgrounds. At the Peer Court level, even attorney monitors might not have a legal background.
Teen Court (older youth) usually meets the fourth Tuesday of the month from 5:45 PM to 8 PM at the Brunswick County Courthouse. Contact Byron Price for details. He needs more volunteers.

Peer Court meets at South Brunswick and Cedar Grove Middle Schools. Tom Krieger and Art Prado handle Cedar Grove, which meets on the fourth Thursday from 2:40 to 5. Paul Maguire and Ken Bastedenbeck handle South Brunswick. Dick Hart and Charlie Joyce coordinate the Listening Post on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year. They provide the topics and you listen and chat with middle school children during their lunch break at South Brunswick Middle School. Kiwanis will reimburse you for the apples and pretzels you’ll need to bring. Several members already volunteer in the schools as tutors, but the schools need more, including spouses. School, times, grade level, subject matter and duties can be worked out to everyone’s advantage. For details, contact Joe Day, 253-8550, [email protected]
