FILMART 2016

elebrating its 20th edition this year, Hong Kong Filmart (March 14-17) has grown to become the most important industry platform

in Asia. Filmart’s own trajectory has been mirrored by the remarkable rise of Asia’s multitude of robust fi lm markets and production industries, from Taiwan to Thailand to South Korea. And, of course, the expansion of mainland China’s own fi lm industry and market has been dizzying to behold.

Filmart is a key component of the Hong Kong Enter-tainment Expo, which brings together the worlds of fi lm, TV, music and digital entertainment to celebrate business and enterprise in these creative industries. It’s a key gathering point for international buyers on the lookout for Asian product, and for every sales company wanting to sell to Asian territories. For years, Filmart

was seen as more of a networking event than a deal-making platform — a convenient stopping point between Berlin and Cannes — but this perception is changing too as Asian markets continue to mature.

Check inside the pages of our supplement for fea-tures exploring the headling-grabbing China-Holly-wood deals of recent times, the UK-China co-production treaty and Hong Kong International Film Festival. Run by the inimitable Roger Garcia, HKIFF celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

And once again, Screen International is delighted to be on the ground producing three daily editions to help attendees get the most out of Filmart. Keep an eye out for Screen’s Asia editor Liz Shackleton and the rest of our stalwart team.

hen Filmart held its first edi-tion in 1997, Asia and its vari-ous film markets was a very

different world to the one we know today. China’s box office was less than $100m annually; the multiplex boom across Southeast Asia was still in its infancy and South Korea had yet to have its first major local hits such as Shiri and Joint Security Area.

Fast forward 20 years and Asia is home to a multitude of dynamic film markets and production industries, including mainland China, which is on course to overtake North America in terms of box office in the next few years. Filmart, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), has grown up alongside this remarkable progress and become the region’s big-gest industry platform.

At this year’s edition, some 800 exhibitors and 7,200 visitors are expected from around 35 countries and regions. New exhibitors and pavilions include the Arab Cinema Centre, Dubai Film and TV Commission, Spanish pro-ducers’ association FAPAE, the Macau government and PactUS.

For several years Filmart was regarded as more of a networking event than a place to close deals — a conveni-ently timed stopover to wrap up Berlin talks and start work on Cannes, with the added benefit of being able to meet the smaller Asian buyers that do not attend the big western markets. But this per-ception appears to be changing as Asian markets mature and the event becomes more established.

“Filmart has shifted from a network-ing event to a deal-making platform,” says Kevin Adege, senior manager of

sales at London and Los Angeles-based Content Media. “Films like Dan Bush’s The Vault and Caradog James’ Don’t Knock Twice have found distribution at Filmart. It has become a strong event for genre films but also extends to the action films and thrillers that Southeast Asia is hungry for.”

European sales agents agree real business is now being done in Hong Kong. “Two years ago we closed our entire line-up with Taiwan for VoD and some theatrical,” says Yuanyuan Sui, head of sales and operations for Berlin-based Picture Tree International, which is attending under the European Film Promotion umbrella.

“Distributors come and go in some territories so it’s good to visit Asia and stay on top of what’s happening. It’s also a chance to meet the decision makers who often don’t speak English, or come to Berlin, AFM or Cannes.”

Selling indie films to ChinaThe irony for sales agents attending Filmart is that mainland China, by far the biggest market in the region, is still pretty much a closed shop for theatrical sales. Since the quota for revenue-shar-ing films was expanded to 34 titles, nearly all taken by Hollywood block-busters, the space for smaller indie films imported on a flat-fee basis has shrunk.

Sellers describe all-rights deals as “practically impossible”, except for big-budget English-language action titles. This leaves sales to a limited number of TV outlets and China’s online video plat-forms, which are plentiful but not pay-ing big bucks for indie films.

However, sales agents say China’s VoD sector is becoming ever more

organised and professional. “VoD busi-ness is getting better because we now have people we can trust to pay and get the films out there,” says Nicholas Kai-ser, sales and acquisition executive for France’s Memento Films International. “We also understand the market better so the process is not too confusing.”

Jonathan Wolf, executive vice-presi-dent of Independent Film & TV Alli-ance, which has organised a pavilion at Filmart since 2011, points out the mar-ket is a pan-Asian rather than Chinese event: “It’s important to note that Filmart is not just about China. With heavy representation from countries throughout the region, Filmart has become the perfect venue to connect with all of Asia.”

Sellers back this up, saying that South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia are all active buyers, and often acquire theatrical rights.

“We’ve also done a few deals with Japan, but it’s a difficult market unless

DEVELOPMENT DAYS HAF IN BRIEF

Established fi lm-makers such as Lav Diaz, Phan Dang Di, Pema Tseden and Adam Wong are bringing projects to this year’s edition of the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF, March 14-16), which also features a trio of well-known directors working as producers with new talent.

China’s Ning Hao is producing Wen Muye’s debut Dying To Survive; Taiwan’s Doze Niu will produce From Black And White To Shades Of Grey, from newcomer Huang Zi; and Gao Qunshu, also from China, will produce Golden Whale, the directorial debut of producer Xu Wen. Taiwanese actress Rene Liu is also making her directorial debut with Lieutenant Yi, produced by Sylvia Chang.

In addition to Adam Wong’s Trains In The Night, four other Hong Kong projects have been selected for HAF: Amos Why’s Napping Kid, based on an award-winning novel; Kenneth Lai and Paul Sze’s Hypnotise The Jury; Anthony Yan and Hang Chiu’s

Vampire Diary; and The Lady Improper from Jessey Tsang, who won best new director at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2012.

HAF will also present fi ve documentaries, including Wang Bing’s Border Bride, produced by Isabelle Glachant, and Nik Voigt and Mariam Chachia’s Abastumani, which is the fi rst HAF project from Georgia.

The line-up of 31 projects also includes the three fi nalists of the HAF/Fox Chinese Film Development Award: Jong Yu’s Brothers (Malaysia), Cheung Suk-yee’s Coarse Tea, Plain Rice (Hong Kong) and Li Yang’s

Man-Made Citizen (China). This year’s HAF is also introducing two new awards — the $6,400 (HK$50,000)

Artention Films Award, which also offers priority entry to the Artention Film

Incubator in Shenzhen, and the $46,000 (RMB300,000) Wutianming Post-production Award, sponsored by

the China Film Foundation.Liz Shackleton

A host of promising features line up for the upcoming edition of HAF, while new cash prizes are on offer to this year’s film-makers

you’ve got a fi lm that’s been at Cannes or the Oscars,” says Picture Tree’s Sui.

But as Filmart is not as intense as the big three international fi lm markets, it’s also a good place to focus on activities other than buying and selling. Increas-ingly, companies attend the market look-ing for co-production and financing opportunities, with the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) offering a convenient platform to network with film-makers and financiers (see box). Filmart also offers a chance for delegates to catch up on market developments.

“You’re not signing lots of deals every day so you have time to refresh your knowledge of the region,” says Kaiser.

HKTDC senior service promotion manager Peggie Liu says one of Filmart’s major aims is to expand the conference programme: “In addition to being a mar-ketplace, we want to build out Filmart as a knowledge platform. The region is changing rapidly so we want people to leave feeling they’ve learnt something to make this a must-attend event.”

Conferences at this year’s Filmart include a panel on moving from local to international production hosted by Screen International; a discussion on ‘Building a Blockbuster Franchise’, hosted by the Producers Guild of Amer-ica; a digital entertainment conference, with speakers from China’s Base FX and Japan’s Dot By Dot; and an anima-tion conference hosted by Annecy Inter-national Animated Film Festival.

Beyond the market fl oor in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), Filmart is also an ideal venue for dinners, social events and network-ing. HKTDC hosts several events inside the HKCEC and this year is planning an opening night cocktail party to celebrate Filmart’s 20th edition.

However, some of the best network-ing takes place in adjacent hotels, bars and restaurants, as Filmart is conveni-ently located in some of the buzziest dis-tricts of Hong Kong. s

or a long while, it looked as if the relationship between China and Hollywood was

going to be more of a fl irtation than a financial reality. Chinese companies would kick the tyres of Hollywood enti-ties, only to walk away, or deals would be announced with great fanfare only for the promised money to never mate-rialise. The obstacles to the two sides doing business were numerous and often cultural.

“There are profound differences between the ways that the US and China do business,” says China veteran David Unger, co-CEO of US agency Three Six Zero Entertainment. “In China, signing a deal can mean the start of the conver-sation rather than the conclusion. It’s the same across every industry and it’s just the way that business is done.”

Lawyers involved in Sino-US deals say that in the early days the two sides often did not understand how to work with each other. Accustomed to short-form agreements, Chinese companies balked at Hollywood’s 60-70 page contracts. They also faced problems moving China’s restricted currency out of the country.

But over the past 18 months there has been a sea change that is shaking the global fi lm industry to its core. Since former Warner Bros head Jeff Rob-inov secured fi nance from Chi-na’s Fosun International for his Studio 8 production venture, two other Hollywood execs have found Chinese backing for start-up studios: Robert Simonds’ STX Entertainment has teamed with Huayi Brothers for a slate of mid-budget movies, while Dick Cook is working with CITIC Guoan on family-oriented fare.

Established players such as Uni-versal, Paramount, Fox and Lions-gate are also tapping Chinese investment through slate financing deals (see sidebar, page 6). Chinese players are also making single picture investments: Alibaba part-financed Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, while Wanda Group covered all the production costs on The Weinstein Company’s Southpaw. Guangdong-based Alpha Animation and Culture Co is a co-investor in triple Oscar winner The Revenant.

Then at the start of this year, Wanda Group became the first Chinese com-pany to buy a large US production entity, acquiring Legendary Pictures for $3.5bn. Speculation is now rife that Wanda or a Chinese tech giant such as Alibaba will join the bidding for a minority stake in Paramount, which has been offi cially put on the block.

Greater understandingWhy the flurry of activity now, after years of fi ts and starts? Mostly it’s a case of the US and China starting to under-stand each other’s markets and business

culture. “It took a few years in

which the two sides had to learn to be comfortable with one other,” says

Lindsay Conner of US law fi rm Manatt, Phelps & Phil-lips, who represented the Chinese companies in the

Huayi Brothers/STX and Perfect World/Universal deals.

Bennett Pozil, executive vice-president of the US’s East West Bank, says it also took time for everyone to learn how to move capital.

“When we started in China, nobody knew anything, so we had to go out and fi nd the rules,” he says. “And once we’d found the rules, we understood, OK that’s how you do it.”

Now the money is flowing and the first films under the slate financing deals are hitting cinemas. Releases over the past year include The Martian from the Bona/TSG deal, The Gift from Huayi Brothers/STX and titles including Sicario and The Last Witch Hunter from Hunan/Lionsgate. “What we’ve seen in the past year is that deals are working and China and Hollywood are excited about working together,” says Conner.

Ultimately, these deals had to happen because there are too many reasons for Hollywood and China to work together. “Hollywood looks at China and sees both a source of financing and the world’s largest under-served market,” says Conner. “China looks at Hollywood and sees the leading force in the global film and TV industry as the place to learn both Western storytelling and the business of the global fi lm industry.”

This is the endgame for the Chinese private companies and state-owned

enterprises investing in Hollywood: China wants to learn how to produce international movies and distribute them globally across all available plat-forms. Although China has a booming local industry, the films it makes face challenges in crossing over culturally — at least for now — so Chinese studios are focusing on English-language tent-poles as the key component of their international strategy.

The motives for China’s global expan-sion are both financial and political. “The Chinese leadership wants China to expand its soft power around the world and that involves getting Chinese cul-ture, tradition and history known out-side of China,” says Stephen Scharf of US law fi rm O’Melveny & Myers, which worked on the Bona/TSG and Hunan/Lionsgate deals.

On the fi nancial front, investing out-side of China just makes good business sense. “Companies like Wanda are look-ing for better economic returns, earning money not just from local markets but also from Western movies. It’s an oppor-tunity to earn profi ts on a bigger stage,” Scharf says. “There’s also been some concern about the strength of the Chi-nese currency, so earning profits off-shore is an opportunity to diversify.”

A seat at the tableWhile China has its reasons for invest-ing, the lessons of history make it tempt-ing to believe this could be the latest ‘dumb’ money to arrive in Hollywood. After all, investing in start-up Holly-wood ventures with relatively small slates and no libraries could be risky — as India’s Reliance found with Dream-Works — and there are many who feel Wanda may have overpaid for Legend-ary. But industry observers say Wanda just bought itself a seat at the global fi lm-making table and direct infl uence in Hollywood (Wanda also recently announced it would seek other Chinese investors to help fi nance the deal).

Then there are the slate deals with US studios such as Fox and Universal where the Chinese partners are not always retaining Chinese rights to the films they are fi nancing. But perhaps this is missing the point — only a limited num-ber of Hollywood tentpoles can be released in China annually and the Chi-nese investors are more interested in participating in their global revenues.

“With the slate fi nancing deals, if it’s structured right, you may not win big but you probably won’t lose big either,” The Gift from STX Entertainment/Huayi Brothers

The US studios are fi guring out how to make movies that appeal to audiences in both China and the US, but that’s to increase box offi ce, not to appease Chinese investors. Their biggest headache is winning the approval of

Chinese censors. “We won’t see movies that portray China in a negative manner; they won’t clear censorship and be imported,” says O’Melveny & Myers’ Stephen Scharf.

Three Six Zero Entertainment’s David Unger, who has worked on the international careers of Chinese stars such as Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh, predicts there will be a rash of clumsily cast movies before the studios fi gure out how to appease both markets in a more subtle manner: “Hollywood did the same thing in the 1980s when we saw a slew of Japanese-themed movies like Black Rain that stumbled.”Black Rain that stumbled.”Black RainManatt, Phelps & Phillips’ Lindsay Conner

believes we won’t see vast changes. “The co-fi nance deals are more about participating in — and gaining insights from — the global fi lm industry.” It’s a different story for Sino-US co-productions, which require Chinese cultural elements and one-third Chinese cast to be cleared as co-productions. “To the extent that people are able to do co-productions, those involve different creative choices that bring more Chinese elements into the fi lm,” he adds.

says Pozil. “We’re also seeing companies making more strategic investments in the US, exploring management styles between East and West. So we’ll see where it all goes.”

Power playThis is the fi rst time in history that Hol-lywood doesn’t have all the leverage. China has the capital and the world’s largest fi lm market, placing it in a very different position to former fi nanciers of Hollywood such as Japan and Germany.

“China isn’t going anywhere and what people are not grasping is that our existence in the entertainment business depends on China for the rest of time,” says Unger. “By the time [James] Cam-eron finishes the next Avatar, how it plays in China will be more important than how it plays in the States.”

Inevitably, there will be speed bumps that slow down the burgeoning rela-tionship. China’s legal systems and fi nancial service industries are still not as transparent and professional as those in the US. At last year’s AFM, Chinese mogul Bruno Wu announced a $1.6bn equity fund with Yucheng Group, an internet fi nancier that turned out to be operating China’s biggest ever Ponzi scheme. Wu told financial publica-tion Bloomberg that he was shocked at the discovery and killed the fund before it was fi nalised.

Everyone is also watching closely what happens to the fi rst films to emerge from a Wanda-owned Legendary, in particular

May 2012 Dalian Wanda Group acquired US exhibitor AMC Entertainment for $2.6bn, then splashed out on Australian exhibitor Hoyts in June 2015.

May 2013 Legendary Pictures’ Chinese venture Legendary East pacted with China Film Group to co-produce titles aimed at Chinese and global markets.

June 2014 Following an aborted deal with Huayi Brothers, Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 secured a reported $200m from China’s Fosun International. Sony has rights to the company’s slate outside of China.

March 2015 Chinese broadcaster Hunan TV agreed to provide $375m fi nancing for Lionsgate fi lms.

April 2015 Huayi Brothers committed to co-fi nancing and co-distributing 12 to 15 fi lms with Robert Simonds’ STX Entertainment, which also has China’s Hony Capital as an investor.

June 2015 Dick Cook Studios, founded by the former Disney chief, announced a $150m fi nancing deal with state-owned CITIC Guoan, a subsidiary of the China International Trust and Investment Corp (CITIC).

September 2015 Warner Bros, China Media Capital (CMC) and Hong Kong broadcaster TVB unveiled joint venture Flagship Entertainment to produce a slate of Chinese-language fi lms for global distribution. CMC is also an investor in IMAX China, Star China TV (previously owned by News Corp) and Oriental DreamWorks.

November 2015 Bona Film Group announced it would invest $235m into movies produced by 20th Century Fox and TSG Entertainment, founded by former Dune Entertainment head Chip Seelig.

January 2016 Dalian Wanda Group announced it would acquire Legendary Entertainment for $3.6bn.

February 2016 China’s Bliss Media acquired a stake in Los Angeles-based sales company Insiders, founded by Wild Bunch’s Vincent Maraval.

February 2016 Universal Pictures sealed a fi ve-year slate fi nancing deal with China’s Perfect World, which is investing a reported $500m across debt and equity into fi lms across the entire Universal slate.

Legendary’s fi rst real Sino-US co-pro-duction The Great Wall, directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Matt Damon and Andy Lau. If these fi lms fail, it may cool the ardour between Hollywood and China but is ultimately unlikely to put out the fi re entirely.

Unger points out the real companies to look out for — Chinese digital titans Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent — have still not jumped into the global business but could make their presence felt soon.

“The big challenge in China, as in the West, is what happens when everything goes over the top and has nothing to do with theatrical distribution,” says Unger. “You already have a generation of Chinese kids that have grown up with iPhones and understand how to stream content.”

China’s digital giants may decide to eschew the fragmented theatrical busi-ness and focus on building global

streaming platforms; they have the capital to compete with their West-ern counterparts Google, Apple, Amazon and Netfl ix. In 10 years time, Hollywood could become

a high-end manufacturer, rather than master of the

world’s distribution net-works. In this scenario, we’ll be more con-cerned about who controls streaming rights, and the rela-tionships between tech giants in China and the US. s

Working with China is not easy but a year on from its much-vaunted treaty, UK producers are learning fast. Melanie Goodfellow looks at the increasing collaboration between the two countries

hen Hong Kong star Jackie Chan hit London in February for the shoot of Martin Camp-

bell’s The Foreigner, the production prompted buzz in more ways than one. At the same time as a spectacular stunt blowing up a double-decker bus on Westminster Bridge prompted a raft of emergency calls from panicked locals, the UK film industry was eyeing the production with curiosity.

Adapted from UK writer Stephen Leather’s 1992 novel The Chinaman by US screenwriter and producer David Marconi, the fi lm stars Chan as a former assassin-turned-restaurant owner seek-ing revenge on the Irish terrorists who killed his daughter. Pierce Brosnan, reu-nited with his GoldenEye director Camp-bell, co-stars as a former IRA leader, with support from UK and Irish talent including Charlotte Murphy and Scot-land-born Katie Leung.

The Foreigner is part of an ambitious slate of fi lms being produced by nascent Hollywood studio STX Entertainment, which is backed by the Chinese private equity firm Hony Capital and has a three-year agreement with Huayi Broth-ers Media Corp.

It is the type of collaboration the UK film industry is keen to emulate. One

joint production has been officially announced a year on from the ratifi ca-tion of a landmark co-production treaty between the UK and China, the feature-length nature documentary Ten Billion (formerly Earth: One Amazing Day) directed by Peter Webber. The collabora-tion between BBC Earth Films and Chi-na’s SMG Pictures was unveiled last October, during a state visit to the UK by Chinese president Xi Jinping.

The challenges facing UK and Euro-pean producers who want to work with Chinese producers are multiple. Beyond navigating China’s complicated film import and censorship rules, producers need to fi nd stories that chime both at home and in China as well as attract the attention of Chinese producers. The lat-ter do not necessarily need to look abroad for ideas and fi nance amid their burgeoning home market. And when it comes to the UK fi lms and TV series beloved by Chi-nese audiences, such as Downton Abbey, Sher-lock and Paddington, Chinese producers are not keen on par-t i c i p a t i n g i n watered-down ver-sions made to sat-

isfy the demands of an international co-production treaty.

“The commitment needed to make a project work in China is pretty huge,” says Isabel Davis, head of international at the British Film Institute (BFI), which negotiated the treaty. “You have to get under the skin of the cultural dif-ferences and how that affects audience appetite and the way you portray China. A story has to resonate and the only way to achieve that is by properly engaging on a deep creative level to ensure there is a level of truthfulness.”

Reality bitesChristopher Granier-Deferre of Poisson Rouge Pictures — who is developing two potential UK-China co-productions, thriller Fox Spirit and The River Dragon

Princess, about a girl sent to a boarding school in the UK

— says he has had to rethink his ideas about what Chinese audiences

want to watch and base them fi rmly in reality.

“When you talk about the Chinese audience,

you’re talking about the 18 to 30-year-old generation

mainstream,” he says. “Western audi-ences have been fed on a diet of either auteur fi lms or works that pander to our fascination with Orientalism that don’t necessarily refl ect Chinese tastes today.”

Granier-Deferre will be at Filmart, looking for partners for Fox Spirit, about a Chinese detective sent on a mission to London’s Chinatown to catch a killer terrorising the expat community.

Susan Xu, vice-president of China Film Co-Production Corporation, ech-oes Granier-Deferre’s sentiments. “Pro-ducers need to look at what Chinese audiences are watching. The box offi ce in the first months of 2016 has been dominated by local comedies and romances,” she says. “Very often the [international] projects we receive just wouldn’t work with audiences here.”

Goodwill huntingBeyond the popularity of home-grown productions, European producers also have to contend with corporate China’s love affair with Hollywood, as evidenced in its recent acquisitions of signifi cant stakes in Legendary Entertainment, AMC and the new STX deal.

But the BFI knew forging links with China would require a multi-pronged approach. “The treaty is one instrument alongside many others that will help a small number of fi lms but has a much greater resonance because of what it

France has led the way among the European countries courting China’s fi lm industry. This is not surprising as the country has been courting China for longer and is the world leader when it comes to co-productions. Unifrance took a delegation of French producers to China in 2004 and ratifi ed the fi rst co-production treaty with China in 2010.

Since then, there have been half-a-dozen offi cial France-China fi lm collaborations, kicking off with Wang Xiaoshuai’s 11 Flowers in 2011, and including Philippe Muyl’s Nightingale, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Wolf Totem and the feature-length animation The Prince And The 108 Demons.

Ongoing co-productions include Charles de Meaux’s The Lady In The Portrait, Alon Chan’s Papa Lanternes and Wang Chao’s Looking For Rohmer.

French major EuropaCorp signed a Hollywood-style distribution and co-production deal with Shanghai-based Fundamental Films in 2012. Fundamental has since handled the release of hits including Lucy and Taken 3 in China, and has fi nanced a number of its productions including Luc Besson’s sci-fi title Valerian, now shooting in Paris.

The country has also forged links through the Aide aux cinémas du monde fund, previously Fonds Sud, which has supported the likes of Jia Zhangke, Zhang Yimou and Wang Bing in the past. The fund is a huge draw for Chinese producers looking for funding for non-mainstream fi lms, as is the Hubert Bals Fund in the Netherlands.

Indeed, the other European countries to have signed co-production deals in the last three years with China include the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. Denmark’s Zentropa, meanwhile, announced last December it was joining forces with Shu Huan’s Shengwei Media and Jetavana Entertainment for the fi rst China-Denmark co-production, My Best Friend Andersen.

symbolises in terms of goodwill between the UK and Chinese government,” says Davis. “The role of government cannot be underestimated in China.”

Around a dozen or so UK projects with potential to qualify for the treaty are in development. Warp Films is working on a science-fiction fantasy action fi lm The Waste Tide, based on the award-winning novel by Chinese writer Chen Qiufan, which is being adapted by UK-based screenwriter Lydia Adetunji for producer Robin Gutch.

Emu Films is in the early stages of script development on Sapphire, the sec-

ond fi lm from Catch Me Daddy director Daniel Wolfe, which the film-maker would like to shoot in China.

Cape Town, London and Reykjavik-based Spier Films is hoping to bring to bear its co-production skills in The Navi-gator, an ambitious project written by Andrew Briggs and taking inspiration from a real-life expedition to Africa by legendary 15th-century Chinese explorer Zheng He.

Not just co-productionsOther forms of collaboration are also developing beyond co-productions. Film and TV agent Rob Kraitt at Casa-rotto Ramsay & Associates reports growing demand for UK writers to work on Chinese projects, especially at the development stage. He cites the example of Dudi Appleton and Jim Kee-ble — writers on UK series Silent Wit-ness and Thorne — who have been hired to show-run a 40-hour series about the semi-historical figure of Judge Dee, a sort of Chinese equivalent of Sherlock Holmes, being produced by their 87 Films and Phillippa Giles at Bandit TV for China’s Combo Drive.

“They are using the expertise we have in developing big series arcs and stories for television and then translating the scripts,” says Kraitt.

Davis also points to former WestEnd Film sales director Mercy Liao’s recent location to Beijing for Universal Pictures International Productions as well as Pinewood Shepperton’s deal with Bruno Wu’s Seven Stars Media, adding: “The co-production treaty was never going to be the only outcome,” says Davis. “There is a real and growing depth to our rela-tionship with China.” s

Four decades on, Hong Kong International Film Festival has long introduced challenging Asian and international work to enthusiastic local audiences. Silvia Wong looks at how the event has evolved

ong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) marks its 40th birthday this year as the

oldest international fi lm festival in Asia. Riding on the cusp of the Hong Kong New Wave in the 1970s, the pioneering festival fast became a destination for the international fi lm community, from for-eign film critics to festival scouts and buyers who were keen to check out what was in store in the region.

Following the groundbreaking show-case of Hong Kong fi lms by Li Hanxi-ang and King Hu in the fi rst HKIFF in 1977 and a Hong Kong cinema retro-spective in the following year, a dedi-cated Asian cinema section was introduced when the programme was expanded in its third edition in 1979.

“It was the first ever discrete Asian fi lm programme section of any festival, up to that point. It gave HKIFF an iden-tity,” says Roger Garcia, who was responsible for the expansion that year.

Garcia is now the executive director of event organisers HKIFF Society. He first joined in its second year in 1978 and again in 2010, making him both the youngest and oldest director of the festi-val. He has seen the festival evolve over the years, particularly in terms of scale. The programme is now six times larger than when it was founded, with more works across the spectrum.

The festival has always maintained its primary objective as an international fi lm event. “We’ve adhered to a curated programme designed to cater to and challenge the audience’s tastes,” says Garcia. “We show popular festival and arthouse fi lms from what I call the ‘mainstream’ fes-tival circuit. We also continue to spotlight fi lms that audiences might not notice. By default we’re probably the premier fes-tival for experimental and avant-garde works in Asia.”

In line with such program-ming philosophy, the festival has never added a commercial

competition or industry market. “Every year our audience surveys support this decision,” Garcia reveals.

As Hong Kong New Wave was an inspiration for Taiwanese cinema and later mainland Chinese cinema, HKIFF developed in tandem with the rise of Chinese-language cinema and became the launch pad for modern Chinese cin-ema when it premiered Chen Kaige’s Fifth Generation masterpiece, Yellow Earth, at its 9th edition in 1985.

“In the mid-1990s, HKIFF was the hub for young fi lm-makers like Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. Because of political barriers, Hong Kong was the one place where they could all meet together,” says Garcia.

Now in the age of information over-load, he admits: “The specialised discov-ery role that HKIFF played before is no longer so essential.” The festival’s great-est supporters remain the local public audience that keeps the festival admis-sions stable and represents around 75% of all tickets sold at the event.

“We still present an annual spectrum of world cinema. We’re still strong in Chinese-language and Asian fi lms, with revealing features and documentaries. Our audience still enjoy the pro-gramme,” Garcia says.

Double bill openerHKIFF kicks off on March 21 with a double bill featuring the world premiere of Yang Qing’s caper Chongqing Hot Pot and the Asian premiere of the Johnnie To-produced Trivisa, a gangster noir by three young Hong Kong directors.

The closing film is Japanese auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Creepy, which, like Trivisa, premiered at the Berlinale last month. More than 240 films from 66 territories, including 63 world, interna-tional and Asian premieres, will be screened over 15 days.

Artistic director Li Cheuk-to, who has been with the festival for almost 30 years, highlights some of the special

“The Expo is a diversified plat-form,” says Peggie Liu, senior service promotion manager at HKTDC. “It hosts trade exhibitions, serves as a film-financing marketplace, and stages various conferences and busi-ness sessions for industry play-ers. But it also encourages participation from the public in music and film festivals, and a star-dusted award pres-entation ceremony to honour outstanding achievements in the industry.

“The Expo has become an annual mega event, attracting entertainment industry players from all

over the world to come to Hong Kong. Last year alone, the Expo attracted more than 120,000 visitors to participate.”

This year, HKTDC launched the Entertainment Expo Mobile

Showroom to raise further awareness of the Expo with the local community. It visited dif-ferent locations in Central,

Causeway Bay, Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui on February 27 and 28.
