North Ave. Sanger, California 93657 O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earth- quakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the lit- tle girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalm- ist our own: “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earth-quakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the lit-tle girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalm-ist our own: “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing.

EUCHARIST DAY JULY 1ST, 2018 Saint Hannibal intro-duced Eucharist Day in 1886. Saint Hannibal wanted the orphans, the poor and the religious groups to understand the greatness of the gift of the priceless treasure of Jesus present in the Blessed Sacra-ment, a day to be worthy of remem-brance. Therefore Saint Hannibal be-gan exciting the children’s holy antici-pation by means of pious industry. Teaching the importance of the com-ing event and exhorting faith, love and desire for Jesus. To achieve this, some verses were set to music: Heavens of heavens, unfold, Descend on us our delight…It was a very loving call, so many innocent, humble souls sang it to draw Jesus down into their midst. By divine disposition, July 1st, 1886 was chosen for the event. The day was unforgettable. The expectation of this day had lasted two years in the plan-ning, so the celebration had to be long. This was the origin of Eucharist Day on July 1st.

ANGLICAN MASS AT ST. MARY’S ON O ST. Bishop Ochoa asked us to help the Anglican Commu-nity who have no Church Building. We will rent our Church on O Street on Sundays beginning the first week of July. We do this in spirit of Charity but their Celebra-tion is not the Roman Catholic Mass and does not fulfill your Sunday obligation. SOLAR PANELS / PARKING LIGHTS. Thanks to the generosity of your donations up to date. We have completed the Parking Lot We still need to install the lights and in the near future the Solar Panels. At the mo-

ment the cost is $341,000. We are in extreme need for about $100,000 for the AC Heater for the Hall before the cold season starts. If you have made a commitment for the Capital campaign contin-ue to make your payments. We invite new families to do the same.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an inde-pendent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman

Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hos-pitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall en-listed in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their wit-ness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battle-field” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War vic-tims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese.
