EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In the 2012 administration of the Graduates and Leavers’ Survey, the Office for

Institutional Effectiveness (OFIE) added five customized open-ended questions addressing:

(1) important factors that helped students graduate (n = 198);

(2) factors that kept those who left college from re-enrolling in the college (n = 79);

(3) beneficial experiences for the graduates or leavers (n = 233);

(4) students’ obstacles in achieving their educational goals (n = 225); and

(5) suggestions for the college to enhance the educational experience of its students (n =

193).

The “n” in the parentheses indicates the number of respondents on the respective survey

question. A total of 354 students answered the Graduates and Leavers Survey. The respondents

for the first and second questions are mutually exclusive and the combined number of

respondents on those two questions is 277. Therefore, the percentages of the respondents who

answered the open-ended questions ranged from 54.5% to 78.2%.

Each open-ended response was analyzed by at least two researchers. A code was given to

each topic mentioned in a response given by one respondent. A response such as, “Free parking,

library & computer lab access” has three topics and they were coded as: “Parking”, “Library”,

and “Lab,” as beneficial experiences, respectively. The codes were then classified into different

categories. The coding and categorization of the codes were cross examined by different

researchers and re-examined by the same researcher for consistency. Even so, the results that we

present in this report allow for alternative interpretation. The actual responses are organized

under the code and the category that they belong to and they are attached in the Appendix.

The top five important factors that helped students graduate are as follows (The numbers

in the parenthesis are numbers of responses): professors/instructors (73), self-motivation and

self-regulation (58), counselors/advisors/staff (38), peers (27), and good college

atmosphere/learning environment/facility (10). When the individual factors were classified into

categories, the top five categories of the factors that helped degree attainment are: faculty/staff

(115), student self-motivation and self-regulation (58), family/peers (33), college

services/resources (21), and student support offered at the college (21).

Forty-nine out of 79 respondents who did not graduate, said the reason that they did not

reenroll at the college was because they still persisted with their education. Among them, many

(43) transferred (mostly to UH Manoa) or would graduate soon. Barriers that prevent them to

enroll include: dissatisfaction with the institution (13), personal factors (e.g., relocation,

disability) (10), outside responsibility (3), financial hardship (2).

Regarding beneficial experience when studying at the college, the top five beneficial

individual experiences are: faculty/instructor (54), small class size (27), library (13), meeting

people/networking (12), and counselor/academic advisor (12). When the experiences were

categorized, the top five categories identified are: student support at the college (61), student

engagement (55), faculty/instructor (55), access to education (54), and good facility/learning

environment (43).

The top individual obstacles identified are: struggle between work and study (25),

parking difficulty (16), challenging classes (15), time management difficulty (13), and lack of

motivation/self-regulation (13). The categorized top five areas of obstacles identified are:

personal (82), academic obstacles (41), facility problem/unconstructive learning environment

(27), class selection limitation (26), and problem with instructors (19).

One-hundred and thirty-nine students provide suggestions for the college to improve

campus environment and facility (31), to improve student support (30), to improve faculty

quality (28), to increase number of classes and class sections (26), to improve instruction quality

(24), to improve communication of information and services (11), to improve library service

(10), and to improve technology/equipment support (9). Decision-makers can factor in specific

student suggestions in Appendix 5 when making improvement plans.

To sum, students are very positive about their academic experience at the college. They

recognized the passion, care, knowledge, and skills of the large majority of the instructional

faculty and staff, helpful counselors, various student support services, programs, and resources

on campus. They appreciate small class size, online class offerings, and affordable tuition to

make the education accessible. They also appreciate the good learning environment and

atmosphere at the college.

Meanwhile students do have to overcome many personal and academic obstacles,

struggling between outside responsibilities and school work, dealing with their own motivation

issue and lack of study skills, facing challenging subjects and assignments, and fighting to get

the classes that they want. They also have to deal with the challenge with parking and navigating

through paperwork and college administration procedures.

The college is doing a good job, explicitly recognized by at least 16 students. However,

students also identified needed improvement in campus environment and facility, student

support, quality of education, communication of information, library and technology/equipment

support.

APPENDIX

Appendix 1. Open-End Responses to Question 11

Question 11. If "Yes" to the question above, what are the important factors that helped you through the college?Faculty/staff

Professors/instructorsA few exceptional teachers. Grants, scholarships and student loans.Advisers, good teachers, awesome friensAll the teachers and academic advisers are very helpful.Availability of classes. Caring teachers. Good networking of studentsAwesome nursing instructorsBeing familiar with the campus and people helped me through college.Caring instructors & great friends!Caring teachers and informative counselors.close learning communities and well trained professorsCounseling and support from teachers.counselors and the teachers drive to help me succeedcounselors, teachers, tutors, and others.Determination, and willingness to complete the classes and program that I attended. Also,

caring teachers and supportive classmates.Excellent Teachers...Karla Cepeda , Stephanie Hawley, and Janice Ferguson... Also Mrs.Terry

BasuelFaustino Dagdag was a fantastic professor and helped prepare me for where I am today.Financial aid from UH systems and private sources that allowed me to focus on my studies

instead of working; maturity; preparation at Hawaii Community College; TRIO program; great instructors (not necessarily in this order)

First and foremost it was my attitude towards college. I was there because I want to be there to learn and I think that every student needs that kind of mentality. Second, the professors were previously employed in the class that they taught. So it was nice to learn from a professor who actually had experience in the field of study. Also if there were clarifications that were needed, the professors really cared enough explain their lessons to the class or one on one. Third, the people on campus for the most part are very nice. I really like the international students who are there studying abroad. I was able to get to know some people from other countries who were eager to teach me about their culture and who were eager to learn about mine. My overall experience at KCC was great. I would definitely come back if I choose to persue another degree.

good faculties(some were not though) and good friendsGood professors that provided care and support. Academic adviser was available for me most of

the time and was willing to offer helpful directions and advices. Library resources are also important, I think KCC did a good job in providing sufficient library resources.

good support staff and good professorsGood teachers.Great instructorsGreat professors

Great professors and a great technologically advanced campus.Great professors Tutors/ Help available Great atmospheregreat teachers and counselorsGreat teachers and friendsI had graduated in 2000 with an AS degree in certified medical assistant program. I come back to

Kcc try to get an other degree in Science. I believed the main factors that I choose to take most of my course at Kcc is the most of instructors are very nice, good study environment especially the library and of course the tuitition is lower than UH.

I liked the teachers, they were very helpful. The environment was also enjoyable and peaceful. Financial Aid from the school was also very helpful!

I was fortunate to have great teachers. I am happy to say that of all the courses I took at KCC, I only dropped 2. And one of the was because the teacher was not very professional and I felt targeted by this person, for whatever reason. I also was fortunate to have an excellent guidance counselor, Mr. Stephen Harris

I would say to make sure you build a relationship some of the professors and most definetly to make an effort to stay in touch with an academic advisor.

Instructors guidance and improved computer rooms.Instructors interaction with students. Instructors displayed concern, care, and professionalism

that made the studying environment worth learning.Instructors.Interesting teachers who inspired me to think outside the box motivated me through my

coursework. It was very important to me to have the support of my boyfriend financially, morally, and

emotionally. Also the instructors were always reachable wether by phone or email. Their quick response was very helpful.

Knowledgeable instructors willing to go out of the way for you if needed.Laulima, access to library, comp lab, internet, parking, good communication with

professors(being availabe outside class time and quick response), quiet study areas with no distractions.

Location, friendly and helpful staff, large selection of classes, and caring teachers who get to know the student as well as their needs.

Mental & physical preparation, and the knowledge and skills from the faculty of the Radiologic Technology Program. I owe Mr. Harry Nakayama, and Jodi Ann Nakaoka my life. If it weren't for their compassion and guidance in my education, I wouldn't be where I am today.

my academic advisor and great help from most of the teachersOne of the biggest factor is faculty of KCC.Professors that actually care about their job (not all of them are though) Nice structure to learn

(good library) In the end you need to have the will to succeed within yourself.Quality teachers, as well as quality classmates to keep me sane.Several of the teachers I had as well as my advisor at the Kapi’o. She helped me a lot through

schooling and helped me get through it.skilled instructorsSmall college and easy access to teachers.... And tutorsSome important factors were having instructors who cared and took time to explain the subject

matter. Also, providing extra resources and offering service learning opportunities.

-Supervised Labs Great instructors : Karla Cepeda, Stephanie Hawley, Janice FergusonSupport from peers and instructorsTeacherteachers and counselorsTeachers gave valuble feedback to me in order to help me achieve industry-related experience.

Teachers also consistantly pushed to simulate industry standards and lifestyles while in classes/labs.teachers. they really seemed to care about the students.Teaching staff was excellent across all my classes. They were available to meet when I had

questions or needed help. The atomospher in the college, the way professors teache to us, everything was great! The caring attitude from KCC's facultythe counselor, and the teacher, as well as the classmatesThe faculty was excellent, passionate instructors who truly care about their students success. The faculty were overall very knowledgeable and approachable. I was encouraged to learn and

to ask questions to facilitate my understanding. The help I received from my counselor and my professors. The instructors and students of Kapi'olani Community College. The instructors in my program, easy to talk to and available for extra help outside of class hours. The instructors of the PTA program were instumentalThe Kaieie program allowed me to make sure that I took credits that would transfer to UH. I had

a lot of really good professors who knew what they were talking about and were good at teaching it.The most help i recieved was the willingness of the teachers. They always lent a helping handThe most instructors were helpful when I had questions through the college. The professors and the learning environment really helped motivate and inspire me to push

through to earn my Associate's.The support of the teachers and the staff and the willingness to allow me to learnThe teachers and the health sciences staff was very informative and made sure the entire class

was where they should be and well informed. The teachers were excellentThe TRIO program's friendly team of mentors and counselors were an invaluable resource, they

really helped me through my entire college career and I am so grateful to have had them. Also, I had two amazing math 24 and 25 professors, Mary Ann Esteban and Dennis Perrusse, respectively. I am currently in Math 135 and I still remember terms and tricks they taught me. Actually most of the professors I've had at KCC have been phenomenal because they really care about the student learning as much as they possibly can. So far, a lot of my professors at UH Manoa have had more of an "I'm going to stand up here and talk, and if you want to learn you have to teach yourself" kind of attitude.

Time management, focus, rapport with classmates and instructorsCounselors/advisors/staff

- small class sizes - friendly and helpful staff - nice, compact campus - online coursesAcademic advisors.advanced access to class materials long prior to start of semester, parking, short driving

distance, and academic advisor's insight.Advisers, good teachers, awesome friensAll the teachers and academic advisers are very helpful.

good support staff and good professorsGreat staff, great resources for students.great teachers and counselorsI had a really good counselor to help me accurately meet my goals while incorporating what I

needed to transfer to UHM after I graduated from KCC so everything could transfer smoothly and I would not have to repeat some courses. I liked that I am partially able to use my knowledge, because I took a lot of Hawaiian studies and language courses at KCC, for my part-time job at UHM working with Native Hawaiian Students. I love helping in the Hawaiian community even if it is one step at a time and nothing trenuous.

I prefer Kapiolani Community College over the other campus' that I've been to. The atmosphere and counselors was more welcoming versus the other 2 campus that I've been to.

Location, friendly and helpful staff, large selection of classes, and caring teachers who get to know the student as well as their needs.

I had a really good counselor to help me accurately meet my goals while incorporating what I needed to transfer to UHM after I graduated from KCC so everything could transfer smoothly and I would not have to repeat some courses. I liked that I am partially able to use my knowledge, because I took a lot of Hawaiian studies and language courses at KCC, for my part-time job at UHM working with Native Hawaiian Students. I love helping in the Hawaiian community even if it is one step at a time and nothing trenuous.

I needed prerequisites to go to UH manoa. The difference in the quality is obvious now that I am there. The classes at KCC were for the most part too easy with teachers who let students pass with minimal effort. I am glad to be in serious school now. But I am also grateful that I was able to get my prerequisites more affordable than at UH.

Dissatisfaction with schoolIssues with instructors

- Not enough night classes - There's a lack of competition in the classes - if a student says the class is difficult then teachers offer extra credit at will - One on-line class I had, a teacher disappeared for about 2 months - no assignments were posted in laulima and I received no responses to emails. I left KCC shortly after that.

I was enrolled in a "white racist" college professor's class; but that never bothered me_ excellent teacher, I was in a "tenured" professors class, who could care less about helping students. Of course, he did everything by the book where one could say too much. I was enrolled in my major which was very important to me. My class whole class less one flunked an important test. He stated the test which he made, was made too difficult; therefore, he passed the whole class. The next day he told me in private that I flunked that test and that I could get the same degree in a quarter of the time instead of KCC in California. That was enough to let me know I wasn't welcome. The final semester, changed major_ the requirement to attend her class was to take an on-line test which I took & passed the semester before. I applied in April, accepted e computer, then 2 weeks later an e-mail was sent to me by the professor "demanding to know how I cheated" the test requirement and that if I didn't retake the test, she''d drop me from the class. I let her drop me instead of explaining that I fulfilled the "cooking" requirement. Appendix 3. Open-End Responses to Question 13

Question 13. What experience did you find most beneficial when studying at Kapi'olani Community College?Student support

Counselor/academic advisorCounselingGreat Acadamic Advisor (Liberal Arts) Mr. Steave. International office is also very helpful.Great professors--please give them a raise, support from its counselors--give them raises, too.

Service learning opportunities with International CafeI really liked how the teachers and counselors were.Instructors and advisers are very easy to talk to and they are professional.Supportive faculty and counselors. The atmosphere and counselors where a lot better versus to my experience at Leeward/Honolulu

Campuses. Leeward was just a horrible experience in which they didn't benefit me at anyway. LCC counselors wait time was ridiculous, in which you set up an appointment, and wait (sometimes for days or weeks) versus in KCC in which you can see them ANY time you wanted without appointment. They almost had an open door policy.

The college is affordable, even though I paid non-residence tuition, it was much more affordable than to go straight to a university to get my general ed. The professors and advisers are humble and helpful and were able to help me and give me some advice when i had questions. I like that KCC and UH campus are sister-campus, and has the same grading and transfer credit system and how students can easily transfer over to the univerisity.

The instructors and courses were very beneficial to my job.The instructors. The counselor was very scary at orientation but after a year of interaction and

instructors telling me that the personality was just gruff - I came to appreciate the info and support and ignore the personality.

The kindness and help that I received from my counselor and professors. There was always available help that is easy to locate. when I decided to stop school for a year It

was an easy procedure and also when I wanted to come back it was painless to re-apply. All of my experiences with any of the counselors have always be productive, informative, they could answer my questions with ease, and most importantly they listened.Resources

for classes.Being a non-traditional student

I don't recall anything except coming back to school after long period of time...kind of worry if I can compete with current high school graduates.

I had to overcome being a non-traditional student being that I had previously received my bachelor's degree years ago and am back in school to improve my skills and knowledge in a field of study that I would like to make my career in the long-run. I had to overcome being in the 25-year-old to 30-year-old age group when most of my classmates were just out of high school.

new experience for me. Once I moved out here, I went straight to Kapi'olani. The institution served as a great experience for me, however Hawaii is not the cheapest place to live in. Hence, I had to get me a full time job and put my studies aside.

I was full time student and full time worker, so, it was really difficult to take classes. I wanted major in different major but I chose accounting because there are a lot of online and evening classes.

Schedule conflicts with work and when courses were offered on campus. Limited availability of online courses offered through KCC.

Sleep deprivation! It was difficult to balance my time between my work, studies, and being a single mom to 3 young kids. I also had many financial obstacles/struggles.

Taking right courses needed toward graduation/transfer/job placementI remember having taken a class that I didn't need because I believed it was a pre-req for another

class that didn't have a clear description. Turned out that it was recommended as a class to take prior, but not required. I ended up getting a C in the extra class and it brought down my 4.0 GPA.

There were small issues with classes that I should have and should not have taken and somewhat do regret for taking some unnecessary courses that didn't count towards my major. With that matter, I felt like I wasted my time and semester for doing it.

Good job/keep up the good workAcademics are pretty good for a community college.I believe faculty members did a great jobI can't think of any suggestions at this time. I think KCC does a great job including/accomodating

diverse groups of students from different countries.I met lots of great instructors at KCC. they are all passionate with the subjects they teach. I think

they are the most valuable assets of KCC.I think you have it covered. Excellent campus, professors, lab facilities, recreational activities and,

a principle that cares about the students.Kapiolani Community College is a great school especially for us that are classes while keeping up

I could not believe my eyes, I could see an orange seed at the 2nd floor water fountain area in months and still has not cleaned up last semester when I was at KCC. I was very disappointed this type working attitude.

Fix the leaking roof.Keep improving the facilities, and add a workout facility so students can exercise during the day...More study rooms and better reception to wifi. The school's capacity is at its limit. I think the college needs more classrooms and professors to

further enhance its convenience without having the trouble to register for an override. And it also needs more parking space for cars.

Update classrooms. Stop doing construction while we are in class!!!!! More night classes.Improve food service

Better food.Cafeteria sucksOverall, I think KCC can improve students' campus experience by adding more food and beverage

venues in school.Students come from all parts of the islands, at all times, from all sorts of background. It might be

a good idea to keep, not just the library open late, but also the cafeteria, seeing as how many students catch the bus and the nearest place to eat is a good walking distance away. Having the cafeteria open later would allow for students to grab food and not have to miss their bus or walk a mile to grab a plate lunch and come back for classes.

Improve parking for studentsBetter parking, more tables for studying around campus, more computers in the library. Offer

more NI courses, inform students transferring to UH Manoa or any institute of higher learning about NI's.

Have more parking available for students and maybe more fun clubs on campus to enhance the student activity.

Improve parking situations. Install additional stalls or parking lots.Keep a high number of on-line class choices to even out the parking issues for students that need

to go to the campus.maybe during specific times, especially in the mornings and early afternoons, open parking stalls

should strictly be for KCC students, and limit to visitors for a period of timeMore parking available!!!!More parking for motorcyle/moped. Observe new instructors and their teaching methods. If if 30

% of students are dropping a class, access the instructor. Make sure professors respond to students email in a timely manner.

advise counselors that can offer post KCC advisementBetter parking, more tables for studying around campus, more computers in the library. Offer

more NI courses, inform students transferring to UH Manoa or any institute of higher learning about NI's.

I think that there is a lot offered at KCC and I am appreciative. If anything just letting students know where to go for assistance, i.e.: financial aid, academic counseling, and programs such as tutoring, learning center, etc. will be beneficial to everyone. All these resources are in place, just knowing that they are there for the younger students would help them.

more info stations for students to get info of help, etc...perhaps more information for requirement for when we move on to UH ManoaTeach basics on how too's cause apparently my high school didn't quite prepare me for it. Don't

talk to us like were kids are stupid, but some people just really need to be told how to do these things like manage time and studying. Also what's important? and priorites. I know there are SOS classes but how many people actually know about them? signs are not really effective advertising.

This is a difficult question. KCC being a computer school makes connecting with busy student schedules is a challenge. I think KCC could use email and electronic media more efficiently. I cross registered in other CC campus and found that I often received more informative emails from the other campuses, which helped me to feel more connected and informed. I also would suggest alumni connection website specific to KCC or departments.

Try to reach out more to the students. I understand that it is difficult to reach every single student, so maybe more flyers or posters on what other programs or events Kapi'olani offers would be ideal.

Update the school website continually! The internet is the first place students will look before asking questions from counselors or teachers. Services at KCC are greatly under exploited, better advertising efforts are needed. Since its been shown that students who stay on campus do better, more events on campus will promote that lifestyle.

Working at TRIO as a tutor, I feel that many students miss out on the extracurricular activities and opportunities offered at KCC. Students often remark how TRIO is their "homeroom" where they get to feel comfortable on campus, stay on top of their academic goals, and network with other students (share career goals, experience with teachers, study techniques, hear about strengths and weaknesses of different academic programs, etc). This sort of stuff isn't taught in class, but is an important part of academics.Improve faculty quality

Evaluate instructors/counselorsBetter Monitoring of counselors and teachersI would encourage professional of the field to be testers and take the courses to evaluate your

failures.More parking for motorcyle/moped. Observe new instructors and their teaching methods. If if 30

% of students are dropping a class, access the instructor. Make sure professors respond to students email in a timely manner.

Have caring instructorscare about the studentsHave more impassioned teachersHire more teachers who care about their students. Some examples of good teachers are Davin

Kubota, Ryan Koo, Collette Higgins, and Kathleen Ogata. Most of teachers are excellent, however, few teachers, they don't care about student!

Have fair academic treatment of students

Less requirements of group work. One professor gave me a low grade because lack of students doing their work. you get what your group gets. They seem to favor certain students. they should help students or lead students to the right path of obtaining a job. not just teach and go teach and go. tests or notes doesnt even pertain to tests/quizzes. or projects.

Other than checking up on certain teachers to make sure they are fair with the students, I think KCC was a great experience.

Some instructors were not fair in their grading critia.suck up to the teachers/ instructors, they are all favoritism jerks!!!

Improve instructor teaching quality/skills1. Establish & enforce specific rules for silence: cellphones on vibrate mode; discussions/group

talk only within the conference rooms, with the door closed; monitor & discourage boisterous "parties" in the conference rooms; segregate a truly quiet section away from access aisles & conference rooms 2. Ensure that the teachers' English level is at least equal to or better than what is required of the students. Ethnic background or foreign origin is not an excuse for bad grammar, wrong pronunciation, or poor choice of words. This greatly affects the communication of ideas, and the success rate in the classroom.

For the instructors who recieved high evaluation remarks, I believe all instructors should follow their lead regarding personality, care, concern and professionalism. Although, this may not be possible, it's something to look into, because for the most students will get the most out of learning as opposed to a boring class that shows no concern at all. Teaching is a skill / technique that should be performed at its highest level. As a student, I felt fortunate to have studied at KCC, and even though some instructors did not meet my expectations, others made up for it.

get a better econ teacher other than [some econ teacher] ross is good thoughHave their professors be better at teaching. There are some great professors but there are also

some very terrible ones as well. When getting the e-cafe, I think the professors should really take those comments into consideration and reevaluate their teaching method.

Hire better professors who nurture a global perspectiveLearn more about the professors than hiring whoever fits the job descriptionMake sure teachers are up-to-date on their subjects. I took a speech class where the instructor

discouraged the use of electronic visual aids and wanted the students to make posters instead. In the workplace companies want presentations in electronic format.

Not necessarily just for KCC and probably restricted by union contracts and tenure but getting rid of lousy Professors and keeping the greats ones around.

Some part-time instructors or new instructors in KCC were not really knowledgable and helpful for the students. I hope KCC can have better employee trainning for these instructors. For example, let these new instructors learn from the experienced instructors before they teach.

Stick with experienced teachers. Not new onesTo inprove teachers.

Retain/acquire quality teachersI think KCC should continue to employ great instructors and keep the class sizes small. Not necessarily just for KCC and probably restricted by union contracts and tenure but getting rid

of lousy Professors and keeping the greats ones around.Raise the pay for the teachers. Maybe they will be more motivated to teach us.The school's capacity is at its limit. I think the college needs more classrooms and professors to

further enhance its convenience without having the trouble to register for an override. And it also needs more parking space for cars.

Tuition is very affordable. It would still be very affordable if you doubled tuition. Do that and use the extra money to hire better instructors. (I had another instructor who quit after about a month into the course. Where is the commitment to educating students?)

Improve instruction qualityIncrease academic challenge

A more challenging curriculum for most. Expect more of your students and they will strive to be beter expect less and they will slack off and be lazy.

One suggestion is to make the experience a bit more difficult. Some classes don't prepare you for Universities; however, there were a couple difficult classes that helped the transition to UH Manoa very well. It prepared me to spend time studying, and what we should expect when we get into upper division courses.

stricter on student behavior/expectationsTeaching & learning specific suggestions

always let the students have a voice. An area that could be looked at is the way some classes are more geared towards lecturing on

certain subjects, when it would be more practical to go over problems related to chapter subjects during class before assigning homework.

Bring more hands on learning.continue to offer simulation lab timeEmphasize more on student research projectsI think KCC should continue to employ great instructors and keep the class sizes small.I think there should be technology programs and that there should be some classes where everyone

can learn at a easy pace and that they should try to help the students who graduated help find a job due to the bad economy problems right now!!

Instructors should listen to students input & go with something different instead of having an "obligation" to have a certain caterer at Accounting Student Night.

Make the Pediatric section longer & Maternity for the PN program.make the standards better for the Culinary DepartmentMaking it a round table classroom not a everyone faces the board. It has more interaction if it was

a round table classroom.More engaging curriculum.more independent projectsMore parking for motorcyle/moped. Observe new instructors and their teaching methods. If if 30

% of students are dropping a class, access the instructor. Make sure professors respond to students email in a timely manner.

My main suggestion is allow students to make mistakes, and establish guidelines while students are in clinical, and remember that we are learning. I feel like the staff had practically a zero tolerance for mistakes and some students that would have been good nurses were kicked out of the program. Also, the students that made it through the program were afraid to ask questions because they didn't want the instructors to think they didn't know what they were doing. I asked a lot of questions and addressed issues with the staff openly and honestly and I was told that I asked too many questions, and I felt like most of the instructors did not like me because of that. Before graduation, I couldn't even get a letter of recommendation that was required for a last semester class from 2 staff members that I requested it from. All the students always told me that they were glad that I asked so many questions because they were good questions that they did not know the answers to, but were too afraid to ask. I think a major problem was that there were no established guidelines of what NOT to do while you are in clinical. Some people got kicked out, or in trouble for things, and some of the students had done the

same exact thing but didn't tell anyone, and didn't know it was wrong, until they heard of their friend getting kicked out for doing the same thing. Overall, it gave me the skills I needed to pass the NCLEX, and be a RN, so thank you for that.

Online classes really shouldn't require specific times to log on and participate in discussions or take tests. I work 6 days a week and take online classes because they provide flexibility for my demanding schedule. When there are tests that need to be taken at school, I would have to get time off of work, which was a hassle. The classes that worked best for me were ones that gave you the week to participate in discussions or take your test online.

Students that seem uninterested and disrupt class IN ANY WAY should be asked to withdraw.Teachers should have more office hours and a more flexibility schedule to meet with students.

Improve library serviceHave longer library hours

During the summer have the lIbrary open at least one day on the weekend.Extending the open hour of Lama Library.I hope that library was open for longer hours on Friday and Saturday.I really enjoy the study environment at KCC's library, my only wish is that they were open earlier,

and stayed open till at least 10pm.It would be nice if the library on campus were open longer like Hamilton or Sinclair library at

Manoa. Other than that there is nothing else I can think of, all the instructors I had during my time at Kapi'olani were great. Knowledgeable in their field and they seemed genuinely passionate about teaching. I've had a few classes at UH where, you could tell the professor was going through the motions.

Longer study hours on campus.maybe a Library that closes later in the day for students to study longer at KCC.Students come from all parts of the islands, at all times, from all sorts of background. It might be

a good idea to keep, not just the library open late, but also the cafeteria, seeing as how many students catch the bus and the nearest place to eat is a good walking distance away. Having the cafeteria open later would allow for students to grab food and not have to miss their bus or walk a mile to grab a plate lunch and come back for classes.

Ethnic background or foreign origin is not an excuse for bad grammar, wrong pronunciation, or poor choice of words. This greatly affects the communication of ideas, and the success rate in the classroom.

Keep the library a quiet place, especially upstairs.Improve student support

Have friendly service/advising staffA friendly admissions staff or any program advising staff would greatly benefit KCC's educational

experience by allowing students to get the help that they need without feeling like a burden.Ensure that advisors are really willing to assist students and not just go through the motions.HIC sucks. they know japanese or some other lang. for internatinal students but they never helped

us nicely. OH IM SORRY MY ENGLISH WAS NOT VERY GOOD ENOUCH AT THE TIME. im now going to UH and i am so glad that i finally got into UH. love UH and obviously my english improved much faster than that when i was going to kcc, also stuffs at UH are all nice. I think the past couple years I spent at KCC might not that bad, but i forgot most of things ive experienced there.

The culture of the administration should change to help the student experience.Improve career assistance

I think there should be technology programs and that there should be some classes where everyone can learn at a easy pace and that they should try to help the students who graduated help find a job due to the bad economy problems right now!!

I would like the school provide more career assistant and workshop.More career advisor. More class schedul on campus. That the college should at least help graduates find a job after they graduate.

Improve financial supportcheaper booksI think overall schools in general should give students an incentive in finishing their objectives.

For example, give a scholarship to someone that completes their stated goal.Improve service to students with disability

?, maybe more help for students who have add, or an outreach to help students to get diagnosed with add

Get more services for those with dusabilitiesImprove student social development support

Be more connected with the students socially-Continue to encourage group activities, group study and support.Create more clubs that can meet up together to have student interactions as well as volunteer

opportunities in areas that will benefit students towards his or her future goals.Have more parking available for students and maybe more fun clubs on campus to enhance the

student activity.I think the campus needs more peer clubs, to network to build a network between students.I'd suggest more student clubs/organizations. This is something I value greatly at UH Manoa, but

found lacking at KCC.More professional clubs to have an opportunity to go to office tours. They can involve into service

learning too. This is a difficult question. KCC being a computer school makes connecting with busy student

schedules is a challenge. I think KCC could use email and electronic media more efficiently. I cross registered in other CC campus and found that I often received more informative emails from the other campuses, which helped me to feel more connected and informed. I also would suggest alumni connection website specific to KCC or departments.

Improve student support servicesencourage students to use ratemyprofessor.com, fix A/C in OlonaGive first year student direct access to financial aid advisor wihout the 1000 hoops to get through

so they do stay in school and not get frustratedI think keeping the option of face-to-face work with students, and not converting all of the

applications (i.e. payments, financial aid options with KCC type things) online. To keep the office option open for those who donʻt care for online work.

it needs to be more military friendly. i believe military wives need to be given the chance to achieve their educational goals.

-more computers -a lounge with tv/pool table/free games food activities etcMore workshops for students.Need to be independent and be a well organize person. Some how getting students involved at KCC is a trying circumstance and I believe Keith ( whose

in charge of students activities is doing a Fantastic job!!!

Involve a cirriculum that encompasses the beverage side of the industry. Possibly wine tasting, brewing beers/non-alcoholic beverages, or coffee tasting. I think that exposing the students to the beverage side of the industry is just as important as the food side of the industry.

Keep a high number of on-line class choices to even out the parking issues for students that need to go to the campus.

Fix what is stated above.Have more counselors available to render aid for students unsure of why they're at schoolImprove the guidance counseling to all students. When first attending, some sort of course

Keep better track of their student's personal information.More cohesive faculty and staff community. Faculty and teachers should feel proud to be a part of

KCC.Suggestion: If a student is receiving financial aid and it is documented in your system they WILL

be getting funds (just a matter of waiting for the funds to go through) ALLOW students to get books using a "book waiver" so students can get books at that time. When financial aid goes through, minus whatever fee was used to get books from their refund! Such a hassle waiting for financial aid to come through so students can buy books. Don't give up and lose sigh of your goal. Be optimistic and open minded to new experiences because whether it's good or bad, you still learn and grow from them. Lastly, be a friend to everyone because you never know that one day that person will be able to help you out in the future.

If possible work as little amount of work and get more rest.if you want to succeed in a class, READ THE BOOK and take good notes!read text book and make many friendsSpeak with counselor before registerStudy ahead of time before the due date because it would be overwhelming if it was last minuteThey should research the courses or classes they are willing to study before entering KCC.You need to be patient. who you are and what you want to do in your future. You just need to keep this in my mind.
