AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY NEWSLETTER

Happy Autumn! This new life of serving as the 10th District President is sure busy and I am loving every minute of it!!

As many of you know, Department Honorary Junior President, Kiana Coleman-Woods’ project this year is giving socks and undergarments to homeless and hospitalized veterans. She received a generous donation of socks from the North Branch Unit 85 so Kiana, together with 10th District Junior President, Megan Bruzek, 10th District Junior Historian Ashley Bruzek,

Department President Carol and me, handed out 812 pair of socks at the Fort Snelling MACV Stand-down on August 2nd. I am so proud of our Junior Auxiliary girls (and their parents) for learning at such a young age what “Service Not Self” means; walking the walk as well as talking the talk. Love you girls!!

Last month I told you about the Legacy Scholarship Run of the ALR the first two weekends in August. This scholarship fund is set up to send children who have lost a parent or whose parent has a 50% or more disability from Active Duty since 9/11/01 on to Secondary Education. All Riders pay their own expenses and as a result of the generosity of our Minnesota American Legion Family, the ALR turned in$148,367.70 to the National American Legion Commander at the National Convention in Cincinnati on 8/30/16. As Steve Sullivan says, “Minnesota is the GREATEST!”.

Anyone who has attended the American Legion National Conventions know what a great experience it is. There is so much to learn from other Departments in our nation about how to serve our Veterans, current-serving military, and their families. It makes me SO PROUD to be part of this organization! Listening to the Woman of the Year, United States Army Major General Peggy Combs was inspiring, learning how women in the military are rising to leadership positions. She is a dual-member and spoke about her pride in the Auxiliary and all our organization does for the military and veterans. As a non-partisan organization the American Legion had bothof the top candidates running for President speak at joint sessions of the Legion andAuxiliary. No matter what personal opinions anyone has, it was truly a memorable experience for me. The Joint Memorial Service and the National Convention parade were heart-warming events. If you haven’t seen the photos, go to www.legion.org/convention/photos to see how proud we Minnesota American Legion Family members are to be carrying the colors of our Great Nation in the parade.

September 7-11 was the Camporee at Legionville with District and Department membership rallies on Saturday. The 10th District Auxiliary turned in 211 memberships and were #1 at the Department rally for memberships turned in by September 1st. From the Steak Fry by the 1st District to the Pig Roast by the 10th

District to the Fish Fry by the 6th District and the Harvest Rally dinner, there was an abundance of food; bingo was played both Friday and Saturday; and were treated to the music of Scrapegoat, Skin and Bones genre of country/blue-grass and hoe-down! What a great time we had dancing to them!

The first invitation I received as president-elect was to the Member Appreciation Luncheon at Tri-City on June 4th. It wasa lovely event and they have SO many members being honored with certificates and pins for continuous membership starting at 20 years and in 5 year increments. The entertainment by the Roe Family Singers was quite a treat. Thank you to Jo Huhne, Kathy Kittelson, and all the Unit 513 Auxiliary Sisters for the wonderful event!

The ALR Romp was September 15-18th at Legionville. Saturday, Paul Edwards from the Brainerd ALR conducted a safety-training class; a meeting about last month’s run and upcoming Legacy Run in 2017 (July 27-30 th and August 3-6th) was held; an obstacle course and “slow ride” competition; a run around Gull Lake to the Cross Lake Legion; lots of food; and music by Wayne and the Boys were just some of the highlights…along with meeting new friends from other ALR Chaptersaround MN. The new Department ALR officers were installed: Chuck Stone from Owatonna is the 2016-2017 DepartmentALR Director, our own Steve Sullivan is the Department Vice-Directory, 10th District 1st Vice-president Jodi Hassing is the Department Secretary, and 1st District Roe Naylor is the new Department Sergeant-at-Arms.

Fall Conference is coming up October 27-29th in Marshall, MN. Department will be sending out the hotel and conference information soon. Department Leadership Chairman Robin Dorf will be holding the seminar on Thursday evening, please see the flyer included.

Rick with Support the Troops in St Francis is looking for military families to adopt for help with holidays/financial issues. Please contact him at 763-370-8419 if you a referral for him.

CHAPLAIN

I thought this was very useful as we start this chaotic time of year.

In the modern world humans are not exposed to a lot of immediately dangerous stress (such as being attacked by a lion),but we do face a lot of low grade stress that eats at us. Stress at work, school, and at home can eat away at us if we do not place it in its proper perspective. This prayer for a stressful day, based on a prayer by John Henry Newman, provides some Christian perspective to our lives.

May the Lord support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done! Then in His mercy, may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last.John Henry Newman (1801-1890),

HONORARY 10TH DISTRICT JUNIOR PRESIDENT

I'm Megan Bruzek and I'm your 10th district honorary Jr president. I'm excited to be your Jr president for the 2016-2017 year.

I'm a 10th grader at Delano high school. Where I am a football cheerleader. I like to go hunting or just simply being outside. Enjoying the Minnesota weather. I love volunteering and helping as many people as I can. The american legion has been a great part of my life forthe last 8 years. I love being able to help veterans and seeing there smile.

My project is military mommy bags. So I'll be collecting diapers, wipes, bibs etc. Anything that would help the baby or mom. My goal for my project is to get enough supplies to at least make up 100 bags. My theme this year is "Lock your arms around a veteran" My

symbol is a lock. I know this year I am serving with the best people I could ask for and that it should be one fun year. I'm excited to have a great year with you all!

See you soon!

Megan Bruzek 10th district honorary Jr president

AUXILIARY EMERGENCY FUND

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund was created in 1969 with a bequest from the estate of Auxiliary member Helen Colby Small of Burlington, WI. It continues today, to help auxiliary members in a time of crisis, through generous donations from Auxiliary members. Eligible members can apply for disaster assistance or educational assistance when noother source is available. To be eligible, the applicant must be an auxiliary member for at least the two previous consecutive years and has paid her current dues. An application may be obtained from your unit chairman or online at www.mnala.org. If you prefer, I will be glad to answer questions or provide the forms to you by mail/email.

From September to May 31, 2016, members of the Department of Minnesota donated $17,256 to the fund and it was forwarded to national headquarters. This amount is slightly higher than last year, and I know more has been donated since then. Thank you! Please keep sending in your donations as several of our members have received assistance already. I’m sure we are all aware there have been a lot of emergencies around our state and nation recently, and our donations will be a benefit to some of our members.

Please mention this resource at your next unit meeting. Do our new members know about this benefit? Do members who don’t attend meetings regularly remember these benefits may be available for them? We should be alert to the circumstances of our members. There may be members who don’t think of it when the need arises.

Thank you for your continued support of this program helping our auxiliary members.

MEMBERSHIP

2016 Membership Program: Make time – help a Veteran, Active duty military, their family, and the Community: Join the pack!

The first goal set by department was 50% by September first. While we did not make this goal, we did come in first placeat the Harvest Rally. Great job ladies!! Now we have to keep it up.

The next goal is 60% by December first. Please send in your membership renewals or go to www.alaforveterans.org and pay the renewal on-line. To pay on-line go to the ‘members only’ tab and either sign in or register. In addition, at this site, you can find information on the current programs and the benefits of membership.

I am working on a spreadsheet for the district that is separated by sub-divisions. In the meantime, I am including the 10 th

District Unit list as provided by Department.

Thank you for all you do!!

LEADERSHIP

“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others” ~ John Maxwell

I am a firm believer that we all have the ability to be leaders. We all can learn from one another and should mentor other members to do the same. True leaders are continually learning and would never say I know everything. We are dependent on having new leaders, at the unit and district, to continue the good work that our organization does and givelongevity to our future.

The main goal for the Department Leadership program this year will be to offer opportunities for members, at all levels, to continue to learn and teach others about our organization.

I am looking for a unit within our District to host a Leadership Open Discussion breakfast. I am looking for a Saturday morning and not to go over 2 to 3 hours, so everyone can have the rest of their day. I am wanting this to be an setting where members can ask question and to have conversations about the Auxiliary. It can cover any subjects, programs, protocols, and I will also have some starter conversations. I want to engage all members at all levels. Whether you are a new member, unit member who has never gone to a district or department function, member for numerous years, past district or department officers, etc. We all need to share our knowledge with one another. If your unit is interested in more information about hosting this event, please contact me.

Included in this newsletter is information about the Thursday Evening Session at Fall Conference on Thursday, October 27th at the Ramada in Marshall, MN. I am excited to be planning this evening and it will focus on how the Minnesota Strategic Plan, Membership and Leadership relate to each other, how they will stimulate growth and develop new leaders.

The 2016-2017 ALA Mission Trainings and National Junior meetings are meeting in Minneapolis on Saturday, November5, 2016. What a great opportunity for us having right here in Minnesota. The training will be highlighting Americanism, Children & Youth, National Security, Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation and Leadership. The training will also provide an

understanding of how the Centennial Strategic Plan is intertwined into all of our programs that we work as members. More information and how to register is available at ALAforVeterans.org/Meetings.

Legacy Scholarship Fund Gets $148,467.70 from Minnesota and $1,155,363.03 total National turn-in at National Convention in Cincinnati. A great Big Thank You to all of The American Legion Family here in

Minnesota for making MN #1 again this year. A lot has been happening since the last newsletter. Camporee, the Romp, a lot of different rides at different American Legion Riders Chapters. The thing

we really need to start doing is to Bragg about what we do as American Legion Riders and that is to Give written reports to the Post Members to put in their consolidated report forms at the local Post Home. Having riding near the end of the year, now is a good time to start recording all the

great thing you as The American Legion Riders Chapters in the Mighty Tenth District have done and keep up reporting all the great things you do. Until next time.
