Stephen George International was established in 2009. Our Sofia office serves as a centre for operating throughout Central and Eastern Europe and further afield.

Personal Profile

Ian joined Stephen George + Partners in 1993 and became a Partner in 2004. Ian is responsible for a team of architects and technicians in our Leicester office.

Whilst experienced in most sectors, Ian is primarily responsible for our commercial and masterplanning projects. Ian’s team have considerable experience in designing and delivering complex schemes ranging from small office buildings to large regional business parks and UK headquarters buildings. A large number of these schemes have involved complex brownfield sites with onerous physical, ecological and phasing constraints.

Developing innovative, deliverable strategies is a key element of Ian’s work, along with the co-ordination of the wider design team to ensure that projects meet the client’s budgetary and design aspirations, which is one of Ian’s key skills.

Geoff has 35 years’ experience of commercial developments in the UK and abroad and heads our Leeds office. He is also a Director of Stephen George International and is responsible for our work in the Sultanate of Oman and the Middle East.

His main expertise, within both private and public sectors, is offices, workspace planning and existing buildings. Geoff is Stephen George + Partners’ key contact with our government clients where he has worked for over 20 years delivering rationalisation and smarter working programmes.

He enjoys working with clients, making presentations and collaborative working and has gained experience of planning enquiries and appeals, appearing as expert witness. He is a confident and knowledgeable communicator and uses these skills for the benefit of clients and their projects.

Stuart joined Stephen George + Partners in 1994, becoming an Associate Director in 2005 and subsequently a Director in 2010. Stuart currently manages a team of Architects and Technicians within our Leicester office.

Stuart has many years’ experience in designing and delivering complex sites for a range of uses, including distribution, office, retail, leisure, residential care and mixed-use.

Stuart remains in contact with most projects during construction, particularly with respect to the design and construction of complex elements. This continuity means that the original design intent is not lost during construction.

Personal Profile

Kanti Chhapi obtained a Diploma in Architecture in Leicester in 1979 and has a continuous record of postgraduate experience with multi-disciplinary practices in London and the Midlands, specialising particularly in concept design and projects with sensitive planning issues.

As an advocate of strong links between the profession and higher education, he has enjoyed a regular association with De Montfort University, where he has been a visiting tutor and part-time lecturer to the School of Architecture and the School of Design and Manufacture.

Kanti is a Past President of the Leicestershire and Rutland Society of Architects and member of the Conservation Advisory Panel to Leicester City Council Planning Department.

He has been regularly invited onto the judging panels for national design awards, including AUDI Young Designer of the Year, RIBA East Midlands Architecture and Leicestershire ProCon Awards.

He is a Past President of the Leicestershire Literary and Philosophical Society.

Our work in the commercial workplace sector goes back to the founding of the practice in 1970. Later work has covered the commercial spectrum, from small speculative offices and control rooms to headquarters buildings. This brochure illustrates our recent work in the commercial offices sector.

Our interest in sustainable design is equally lifelong; we were commissioned to research passive solar energy collection by the European Commission back in 1978.

Recognising the need to adhere strictly to budgets, we have developed strategies for sustainable design that are cost-effective for our clients to implement.

Many recent projects have required us to assemble a brief for the building that meets the client’s unspoken aspirations and needs. This has meant working closely with developers, funders and planners to develop a brief that meets the project team’s needs and budget.

This close relationship with developers and other stakeholders is the basis of a good design. We aim to add value to ensure that the timescale, budget and brief are met with a sustainable design for a beautiful building.

Increasingly, our clients are seeking to make the very best use of their space, often with the aim of reducing floor space and rent liabilities. This might arise from changing business circumstances, be it expansion or contraction, relocation or a desire to implement new ways of working to increase business efficiency.

We work with our clients to help rationalise their space effectively while helping to ensure that access for all staff and visitors (including those with disabilities) is carefully considered. We have in-house capability and access to specialist consultants and can provide access audits and upgrade plans for building modifications and reasonable adjustments.

We can make recommendations for incorporating building features to allow facilities to be upgraded in the future to meet changing business needs and user profiles. This can often help a business to deal with any necessary expansion without incurring the costs and disruption of having to relocate.

Whether it be a ‘new ways of working’ approach for a more dynamic, flexible and cost-efficient workplace environment or a more conventional desk oriented approach, we work with clients to ensure they have the best outcome for their businesses. Developing internal networks and effective knowledge sharing within organisations are increasingly important facilitators of higher productivity. A communication culture is one important part of delivering the strategic objectives of an organisation.

Working in different ways

Space needs to be provided to suit a wide range of activities, be it for social interactions, group learning, focused tasks or collaborative team working. The most effective organisations of the future will provide all of these types of work spaces with a balance that suits their workforce and business purpose.

The rapid development of portable communication and computing has created a new breed of highly mobile workers. People will increasingly be able to choose how and where they work as the link to a fixed workplace diminishes for more and more of us.

Agile Working and Cultural Change

Our experience working with our clients in both the private and public sectors indicates a clear move towards agile working methodologies. We recognise that agile working is more than a space plan; it is an activity, a way of doing work.

For some businesses it represents a significant departure from their established culture and the way they do things. This is most noticeable in the public sector, but not exclusively so. Our role is to use our design skills to create the environment that will allow businesses to change and to provide clients with the guidance they will need to make the very best out of what has been provided.

Implementation of agile working arrangements, while offering improved utilisation and efficiencies, must not be seen as simply a way of getting more people into an office, although that may be a beneficial side effect, provided it is done in a considered way.

People are different; people work in different ways. While a ‘buzzy’ office may be a stimulating environment for extroverts it can be extremely uncomfortable for introverts or people who thrive and do their best work in a quieter environment. A successful design has to take account of these important differences.


Modern Office Design Solutions

We understand the benefits of connecting the office space with nature (biophilic design) and the positive effects on staff wellness and wellbeing of staff cannot be underestimated. Whether it be through connection with views (existing or created), use of external space or use of natural materials and graphic devices in the office interior; we will be able to create spaces that make people feel better.

The correct design solution for all of these spaces will be dependent on an organisation and its own particular business culture. We take the time to understand each organisation’s aspirations for development and growth, so we can shape a space to meet those needs.
