“HILTON HEAD ISLAND'S ADVENTURE PROFESSIONALS”

• Hilton Head Island• Pinckney Island National

Wildlife Refuge• Daufuskie Island• Historic Bluffton• Palmetto Bluff

Explore pristine waterways and secluded islands that most people don’t get to see!

The experienced captains of Live Oac have spent years traversing the waters of Hilton Head and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. Their unique focus on the Wildlife Refuge provides a fantastic opportu-nity to show you the real Lowcountry. This area offers year-round dolphin activity, pristine conditions for water-sports and access to superb fishing locations.

Other features that set Live Oac apart from the rest are exceptional client-to-guide ratios and high-end boats and equipment. Live Oac’s priority is creating a first-class experience and great memories.

PRIVATE OR SHARED CHARTERSCustomized private adventures are Live Oac’s specialty. Mix-and- match activities, such as dolphin watching, watersports, sandbar/shellbank/beach combing, cast net-ting, crabbing, shrimping, nature photography, birding, sunset cruises and more, create the ideal experi-ence for groups and shared trips.

WATERSPORTSFun on the water is easy with Live Oac. Their proximity to ideal waters for watersports means more time getting “it” than getting “there.“

Enjoy water skiing, wake boarding, kneeboarding and tubing behind one of Live Oac’s comfortable “SUV” deck boats featuring cushioned seats and seat backs, coolers and shade. Live Oac’s USCG-licensed boat captains are experienced watersports instruc-tors. Whether you’re a novice or experi enced skier, boarder or tuber, Live Oac can lead you to an enjoy-able outing on the water.

DOLPHIN WATCHINGDolphins are plentiful around the Wildlife Refuge across from Live Oac’s dock, so trips as short as 1 hour are possible. Most popular is the 2 hour, exploring more remote waters. Better yet, combine a Dolphin Watch with Watersports or Fishing on a custom trip!

FISHINGInshore & Coastal fishing are Live Oac’s specialty. Your professional guide will lead you towards targets like Redfish, Trout, Flounder, Sharks or other seasonal species such as Cobia, Sea Bass and Tarpon. There’s something for everyone no matter what age or experience. In summer, Evening Family Shark Fishing is timed perfectly for fun and comfort as it cools off at dusk. Trips tend to fill well in advance, so call early for the best availability.

KAYAKINGDon’t get lost in the crowd! Why settle for a mass kayak trip amongst lots of strangers? Experience Live Oac’s private guided kayaking, for just your crew. Designed for families, couples, and friends, this trip goes at your pace. Enjoy your time on the water without feeling like you have to keep up with the Joneses.

Kayaking, boating, fishing, watersports, dolphin watching, beachcombing and more! With all these options, it’s a good idea to talk to a Live Oac guide to help plan your ideal trip. Tell them what you have in mind and they’ll craft a personalized outing for your Hilton Head adventure.

Established in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers hands-on exploration of the Lowcountry‘s diverse cultural heritage and complex natural history with an array of programs, presenta tions, exhibits and tours for all ages.

The last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007.

Comprising 68-acres of salt marsh and maritime forests, centuries-old live oaks, open fields and a dozen historic structures, Honey Horn is located at the inter section of Highway 278 and the Cross Island Expressway.

Over its 300-year history, Honey Horn has been home to Indian tribes, indigo and Sea Island cot-ton plantations, Gullah families who hunted and farmed the land, a hunt club established by northern busi nessmen and, starting in 1950, Fred Hack’s private residence and farm.

In the late 1990s, the Town of Hilton Head Island purchased the site and leased it to the Coastal Discovery Museum for 95 years.

Construction of the 6,000-sq.-ft. hunting lodge began in 1859 and, today, known as the Discovery House, is complete with permanent and temporary exhibits, a Kids Zone and gift shop.

Self-guided tours of the property via salt marsh boardwalks and an oys ter shell trail include the Karen

Wertheimer Butterfly Enclosure, a Lowcountry Heritage Garden and a Camellia Garden. Guided History/ Nature Walks & Talks, live animal programs and seasonal kids camps are offered on a regular basis. Off-site tours and programs include the Forts of Port Royal, Beach Discovery, Turtle Talks & Walks and much more.

This historic property is also avail-able to rent for wedding recep-tions, corporate events and is home to some of the Island’s annu-al festivals.

DOLPHINS, DOLPHINS, DOLPHINS, everyone wants to see them! Of course, they are wild animals, so we can’t guarantee to see them on every tour we do, but we are located in one of their favorite feeding spots, so our percentage of seeing them might just be the highest on the Island! Blackbeard, Nick and little baby Stripes are a few of our favorite dolphins. For over 10 years, Kayak Hilton Head has been teaching visitors all about the dolphins, birds, oysters, salt marsh and many, many other interesting things about our Island. A great activity for beginners, families and experienced alike. Our goal is to provide a leisurely, fun and educational experience. Our guides have been doing this for years and still love it every day!

Our kayaks are easy to paddle and completely safe and comfortable. We rotate new kayaks into our fleet every year, giving you new and high-quality equipment to better enjoy your experience. Single and double kayaks are available. Yes, dolphins are guaranteed on the boat tour. Along with the dolphin it’s a great sightseeing tour as well. There is no better picture of the Harbour Town Lighthouse than from the water, many beautiful homes are seen along Spanish Wells and the secluded beaches of Daufuskie Island are very picturesque.

DOLPHIN DISCOVERIES (843-684-1911), our guaranteed dolphin, 6-passenger BOAT TOUR also runs daily tours for those looking to enjoya leisurely boat ride with one of our captains.

Atlantic Bottlenose DolphinsLocal waters host a large, year-round popu la tion of these playful, air-breath ing mammals. The South Carolina Lowcountry is also one of

the few places to witness strand feeding – a learned behavior where dolphins work as a team to corral fish, chase them onto a muddy bank and then temporarily beach themselves to eat their catch.

Marsh TackyOnce the most common horse found in the Southeast, this Colonial Spanish breed is unique ly adapted for sur vival in swampy ter rain. On the Sea Islands, Gullah families used them for transporta tion, hunting and farming. Today, fewer than 200 of these small, gentle horses exist.

Alligators Keep your distance from these feder ally-pro tected, prehistoric rep-tiles often seen sunning themselves on the banks of lagoons. It is ille-gal to feed these cold-blooded animals and, although they may look listless and slow, they can out-run humans over short distances.

Loggerhead Sea TurtleEvery summer, dozens of female log gerhead sea turtles travel thou sands of miles to Hilton Head Island, return ing to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched two or three decades earlier. It is a federal offense to harass these ancient reptiles which can weigh up to 300 pounds.

Green AnoleA common lizard in South Carolina and Georgia, often called a chameleon for its ability to change color. The only anole species native to the United States, males have a pink throat fan they display when

protecting their ter ritory or finding a mate.

Southeastern Five-Lined SkinkNamed for the five white or yellowish stripes running down their backs, these moderately large lizards eat a variety of insects and spiders. Like many other lizards, their tails will break off if attacked, but it is only a myth that they are venomous.

Although mucky and smelly, the salt marsh is an important part of the Lowcountry.

In actuality, the salt marsh produces more food for the environment than rain forests. The green grass that dominates the marsh is called salt marsh cord grass or Spartina. When this cord grass dies each winter and decomposes, its nutrients are released into the marsh mud, creeks, streams and even into the ocean. These nutrients begin the food chain for the entire Southeastern coastal area.

So, the next time you enjoy a meal of shrimp, mussels, oysters, blue crab, stone crab or saltwater fish, thank the muddy salt marshes.

LowcountryKAYAKING

If you’re looking for a bit of adventure on Hilton Head, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Island’s extensive rivers, tidal creeks and lagoons by sea kayak. After all, much of the area’s wildlife simply cannot be seen from land. Kayaking provides visitors of all ages with the opportunity to get “up close and personal” with the Island’s unique flora and fauna.

Like canoeing, kayaking offers a quiet, non-invasive way to navigate Hilton Head Island’s waterways, offering the opportunity to observe wildlife at close range.

Using a two-bladed paddle, the kayaker sits comfortably in the bot tom or on top of the sea kayak, dipping the paddle to the right and to the left of the boat in a steady, constant motion. You’ll feel a mil lion miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life as you observe dolphin, alligators, birds and other wildlife in their wetland home.

On Hilton Head Island, visitors can rent a kayak, take kayaking lessons or go on guided kayaking excur sions. A sunset or sunrise paddle offers the perfect opportuni-ty to see the marsh as the sun shines its burnished light over the surface of the sea. A full moon paddle allows visitors to paddle by the light of a full moon, which is actually quite bright when reflected off of the marsh’s smooth, mirror-like water.

For the more adventurous pad dler, over-

night expeditions enable visitors to immerse them-selves in the Lowcountry’s unique ecosystem, explor-ing remote offshore islands and camping in pristine nat-ural settings.

Guided kayak fishing trips offer a fun twist on traditional fishing charters. Head to shallow waters on a specially-outfitted kayak and fish where even flat boats can’t go.

Take to the water in a sea kayak, paddle in hand, to enjoy the full range of Hilton Head Island’s beau-ty. The Island’s estuaries and wetlands are a world unto themselves, filled with fascinating plants and animals that will deepen your appreciation for the Lowcountry. No experi-ence is necessary for most guided kayak ing trips.

One of Hilton Head Island’s most popular residents, Atlantic Bottle nose Dolphins are abundant in local waters. In fact, these incre dible marine mam-mals share so many characteristics with humans it can be argued they are our under water counterparts.

One example is the way they give birth.

Female dolphins give live birth and nurse their young for up to three years. Male calves often stay with the mother for up to five years and potentially for the rest of their lives, if female.

In the wintertime, the Bottlenose pop u-lation averages from 200 to 400 animals. Early spring through late fall, we are inundated with dolphins as females from all over the South eastern coast make an annual trek to the area to give birth. Other females act as midwives and nannies, often taking turns

watching over the young as the mother feeds.

Males tag along, following the females wherever they go – yet anoth-er human trait!

From a boat, you will often see the young calves swimming and play ing with the other dolphins in the pod. Providing abundant food for the mothers, Lowcountry waters also give the young dolphins a fairly safe environment to practice swimming and hunting before mov ing on to other parts of the coast.

Although they lack the gracefulness of an adult dolphin, the calves’ play-fulness and energy tends to remind one of their own youth.

By Shawn Hern, Naturalist/Captain of Dolphin Discoveries, a division of Kayak Hilton Head.

and nature trails, in addition to 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches, one of the best ways to explore Hilton Head Island is on a bicycle.

An activity the whole family can enjoy, area bike rental compa-nies feature not only the standard beach cruiser for all ages and sizes but children’s seats and car-riers, tandems, mountain bikes, adult tricycles, carts and cargo trailers, as well.

Rentals are available for a few hours to a few weeks and it’s always a good idea to make res-ervations ahead of time for the best selection. Most companies offer free Island-wide delivery and pickup and be sure to ask about locks, baskets and helmets.

Plot a route before you leave or pack a map in case you head off the beaten path. Large maps can also be found at various locations alongside the pathways with one side displaying the entire Island and the other pro-viding zoom detail of the area with inter-national symbols indicat-ing places of interest.

Motorized vehicles, except electric wheelchairs and emergency vehi cles, are prohibited

on the path ways. Pathway mark-ings include White Diamonds indicating a restricted travel lane – travel with the flow of vehicletraffic; White Stripe and a StopSign for a road crossing – stopand look for motorists; YellowCenter Line for two-way traffic –keep to the right; and SeveralWhite Diagonal Stripes marking acrosswalk – watch out for others.

It is important to obey all traffic signals and pathway mark ings, especially stop signs.

Travel at a safe speed staying in a single-file line and keeping a safe distance from one another. By law, bicycles must have a sound ing device and you should sound a warning before passing others. Most pathways are not illumi nated at night, so wear light clothing and carry a flashlight and make sure your bike has a headlight and reflectors.

THECRAZY CRAB

The Crazy Crab boasts two picturesque water front locations on either end of Hilton Head Island.

This longtime local favorite opened in 1984 on Highway 278 over look-ing Jarvis Creek. Two years later, the second restaurant began serving hungry patrons in Harbour Town.

Destroyed by fire in 1998, the North-end Crazy Crab was rebuilt to twice its original size and now accom mo dates nearly 250 people inside the spacious, nautical-themed restau rant, with another 80 seats outside on the deck.

Open daily for lunch and dinner, both locations offer similar menus featuring made-to-order Lowcountry specialties.

Share a complimentary basket of freshly-made hushpuppies while enjoying a bowl of She Crab Soup, shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab cake, oysters on the half shell or Caesar salad.

During lunch, the variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood plat -ters and daily specials are sure to please every palate. In the evening, the menu expands to include an even larger selection of appetizers and entrées, such as stuffed floun der, bacon-wrapped BBQ shrimp and Alaskan king crab legs.

From fresh fish and tender sea scal -lops to succulent shrimp and plump oysters, patrons may choose their seafood broiled, fried or steamed with a garden salad, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, onion rings, rice, baked potato or French fries on the side. Those who can’t make up their minds

may opt for the signature Steamed Seafood Pot or a combi na tion platter. Several steak and chicken dishes are available, as well.

Steps away from the Harbour Town Playground in Sea Pines, with an enclosed outdoor play area and huge indoor saltwater aquarium at Jarvis Creek, kids are always wel come at these casual, family-friendly establish ments.

The special “Minnow’s Menu“ in cludes macaroni & cheese, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and pizza with a selection of locally-made ice cream, homemade Key Lime pie and chocolate mud pie for dessert.

According to co-owner Peter Kenneweg, the secret of the restau -rants’ success is three-fold.

“It’s more than one thing,” he explains. “It’s got to be good food, good service and the price has to be right.”

The Crazy Crab restaurants have been local favorites for more than 30 years. A children’s menu, takeout and outdoor seat ing (at Jarvis Creek) are avail able. Reservations are not required, large groups welcome.

HOW HILTON HEAD GOT ITS NAME

Many people here on a first visit make a basic error in assuming that somehow the name Hilton Head has to do with the Hilton hotel chain. While the late hotel magnate, Conrad Hilton, may have been related to the man from whom the name sprang, it is certain that he was unaware of the Island’s existence during most of his lifetime.

Hilton Head gained its name from some notes on navigation made by the British explorer and seaman, Capt. William Hilton, who investigated the lower coast of South Carolina in 1665 for a group of Barbadian planters who were interested in expanding their New World holdings.

His sighting of a particular bluff or “headland” as a way of finding the entrance to Port Royal Sound while still at sea was noted in his papers and the name of that headland soon applied to the entire island.
