The Swedish and Nordic people became famous all around Europe, west Asia and north Ameri-ca, already in the 9th century. The Vikings con-quered the sea with their ships, they plundered and slaughtered, but also built trading networks. The history from this time is written on runestones.

In the middle ages the people in Sweden were fighting; with the Norwegians, with the Danes, and with other Swedish people that weren’t loyal to the same family. Under hundreds of years the country was dominated by three families, taking turns in being the royal fam-ily. Well, taking turns might not be the correct words, they fought, and whoever won got to be the king.

But fighting for hundreds of years is tiring, so in 1397 Sweden, Nor-way and Denmark started a union that lasted for 123 years. After the Danish becoming too powerful the Swedish people revolted and crowned their own powerful king, Gustav Vasa. Gustav Vasa threw the Catholic Church out of Sweden and decided the national religion was to be Protestantism. Joining the state and the church he made sure the money from the churches stayed in good hands: his own.

For some other hundred years not too much happened. Sweden was in war all over northern Europe. We lost some, we won some. In 1648 Sweden was as big as it has ever been. The Baltic sea was practically a lake inside Sweden. All the land around the sea belonged to the coun-try with the blue and yellow flag. Those colors have been around for al-most a thousand years now, but the flag, as it looks today, is from 1562.

The runestone “rökstenen”

In 1809 we lost a war against Russia and by that also Finland, which at that time belonged to Sweden. Since 1814 Sweden has never been in war, and Swedes are proud to live in the country on earth with the longest continuous peace. Instead Sweden put energy in building a good sys-tem for developing knowledge for everyone. The 19th century there-fore is the start of Swedish authors, musicians, inventors and businesses.

The most famous Swedish inventor is Alfred Nobel, who invented the dy-namite, perfect for a country with a big mining industry. When Nobel died his will read that the money would be put into a fund and five prizes should be handed out annually to people that had made something for the human race. The prizes are in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.

One of the many Nobel laureates was Dag Hammarskjöld (the peace prize in 1961), former Secretary-General of the united Na-tions. He, and many other Swedes have followed the Nobel spirit of peace, and acted as diplomats all around the world, working for peace.

Today, when asking people around the world what they know about Sweden, you get various answers. Some people answer famous compa-nies like Ericsson, IKEA, H&M or Volvo. Other people answer music groups such as ABBA, Roxette or Ace of Base. Answers also include sport stars, the Swedish sin, the Pirate Bay, gender equality and the royal family.

Useful facts about Sweden

Metric systemMiles, gallons, pounds and other non-standardized measures don’t work in Sweden. We use the ISO standard, the metric system.

WaterThe water in Sweden is one of the cleanest you can find anywhere in the world. If you want to taste the best water, just fill your glass with water from the nearest tap.

TippingTipping is not a rule in Sweden. At restaurants you can of course choose to pay 200 SEK instead of 189 SEK, that is normal, but people don’t expect you to. At more exclusive restaurants it is good manners to tip, maybe about 10%.

Value Added TaxIn Sweden we like to know how much to pay for the things we’re buying, so all prices include VAT (normally 25% or 12%).

Credit CardsAll mayor international credit cards are accepted in most places in Sweden, even small kiosks. You might even rarely come upon places that don’t accept cash at all.

24hSweden uses the 24 hours system, so don’t set a date for eight o’clock if you’re not planning on waking up very ear-ly in the morning. It should be 20:00.

Swedish coins

TaxiTaxis in Sweden are quite expensive. A 2 km journey cost about 100-120 SEK, a 10 km drive about 250 SEK.

Hi SirIn Sweden we are very informal. It is completely normal just to say hi, “hej”, to anyone; your boss, a friends, a minister or even Bill Poucher.

SmokingIn Sweden it is not allowed to smoke indoor at public places. So make sure you sit outside, or even better; don’t smoke at all.
