IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to download articles for this course by searching through a search engine such as Google, unless you are interested in paying $20 to $30 per article. Journal articles for this course are available free of charge. The steps below tell you how to get access to them.

1. Go to the SFU Library Catalogue page at the following link: < http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/ >.

2. Determine whether the material you are looking for is a an encyclopedia entry, book chapter or journal article. Here is an example of a reference for an encyclopedia article:

Ohala, J. J. (2006). Phonetics: Overview. In: Brown, K. (Ed.) Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (Second Edition). Elsevier Ltd. [Electronic encyclopedia entry]

Here is how to interpret the reference:

Author(s) Ohala, J. J.Year of publication 2006Title of article Phonetics OverviewEncyclopedia title Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics

To locate this source, select search by title from the Library Catalogue page at the link above.

a) Enter the title of the encyclopedia in the for field as shown below:

b) Now click “Search.” On the next page, click on the appropriate link to the encyclopedia.

c) On the next page, under “Click for online access,” click on “view full text.”

d) The next page will provide you with a search facility. Enter the author’s name (Ohala) in the Author field and click “search.”

g) You will now be able to download a .pdf file containing the article. Save this on your computer or other device for reading.

2. Here is a reference to a book chapter.

Akmajian, A. & Demers, R. A. (2010). Chapter 3: Phonetics and phonemic transcription. In: Linguistics : An Introduction to Language and Communication, 6th Edition (pp. 67-107). Cambridge: MIT Press. [Electronic book chapter]

For book chapters, steps a, b, and c are similar to those above. Search by title and enter the title of the book (Linguistics: An Introduction to Language and Communication) in the “for” field. Be sure to select the right link:

Click for “online access” as before.

d) You’ll now have access to the SFU ebrary reader.

You will now be able to navigate to the section of the book that is assigned. In this case, it’s chapter 3. At this point, you may download a copy of the chapter.

d) Note that if you create your own free ebrary account, you will be able to print out sections of the book as needed.

3. Here is a reference to a journal article.

Fitch, W.T. (2000). The evolution of speech: A comparative review. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 4(7), 258-267. [Electronic journal article]

a) Select “search by Journal title’ from the Library Catalogue page. Enter the title of the journal in the for field. In this case, the journal is “Trends in Cognitive Sciences.”

b) Now click “Search.” On the next page, click on the appropriate WEB link for the journal. c) On the next page, click Access Journal or Click for online access.d) The next page will provide you with one or more links to the same journal. These are from different journal

sources that the SFU Library subscribes to. Note that some of these links may cover different dates for the journal. Click on one that covers the date of the article you need.

e) You will now see a list of the volumes of the journal that are available. In some cases, page numbers are also shown. Click on the link to the correct volume number. In this case, you are looking for volume 4 (issue #7). Now locate the pages that correspond to your article. For this article, you need pages 258 to 267.

f) You will now be able to download a .pdf file containing the article. Save this on your computer or other device for reading.
