(D) Except as provided in division (E) of this section, a student who enters ninth grade on or after July 1, 2010, and before July 1, 2014, may qualify for graduation from a public or chartered nonpublic high school even though the student has not completed the Ohio core curriculum….

Mathematics - 4 credits, including Alegbra II Science - 3 credits •Inquiry-Base Laboratory Experience

• Third science must be “advanced” Fine Arts - two semesters completed in 7-12 Electives – 5 credits from specified list

Eligible Students

• Entered high school for the first time on or after July 1, 2010

• Current sophomores through current 7th-graders

• Graduating Class of 2014 unless……….

• Opt-Out will be discontinued unless extended in law.

Why might a student seek Opt-Out?

Not prepared for advanced mathematics(four credits including Algebra II)

Not prepared or not interested in advanced science

Career/College plans may not require the advanced mathematics or science.

Be Very Careful - Many CTE Programs do either require or recommend advanced math/science. Check college admission and entrance requirements regarding math and science.

Requesting Opt-Out

After attending two years of high school

File a signed written consent (OSBA guidance)

Follow ANY district or school procedures

Make sure student/parents understand ALL Opt-Out requirements and consequences.

Opt-Out Consequences

Cannot enroll in most four-year state colleges

Exceptions:

Central StateShawnee StateYoungstown State

Must complete 10 semester hours of dual enrollment credits under ORC 3345.06

Electronic transcripts will flag Ohio Core completion

An Individual

Career Plan (ICP) is Required

1. Career Goals. Include post-graduation plans. These must include a two-year degree program or a business-industry credential or entering an apprenticeship

2. Interests, skills and knowledge that support the career goals.

3. High school classes related to and that support the career goals.

4. Outside-of-school activities that support the career goals.

What is the Alternative Curriculum?

Requirements of ORC 3313.603(B) “at a minimum”

• Three math credits

• Three science credits

• Six electives

• No semesters of Fine Arts

ORC 3313.603(E) gives districts three options for alternative curriculum:

1. As Is (the old requirements)2. Plus additional district requirements3. No exception –

Essentially No Opt-Out, the Ohio Core is it!

Students With

Disabilities and the IEP

Many SWD can and will complete the Ohio Core.

The IEP controls the requirements for graduation, both curricular/credits and assessments/OGT.

Disabilities and the IEP

For any SWD with an IEP that includes the Opt-Out, the ICP becomes part of the IEP. Such students would be exempt from the college consequence in the law if:

The person met the high school graduation requirements by successfully completing the person’s individualized education program developed under section 3323.08 of the Revised Code. ORC 3345.06(B)(2)
