DescriptionAn okapi is a mammal that lives in Central Africa. They can run 37 miles per hour. They are also related to giraffes. Most of them are five feet tall to their shoulders. They weigh about 550 pounds. They have dark brown striped hindquarters. An okapi has toed hooves.

Habitat

Okapis live in Central Africa near the upper Congo River. Baby okapis live in a nest. Most okapis live alone. And they mark their territory with their scent.

SurvivalOkapis are endangered from people. They have very good hearing and hide behind plants and trees when their in danger. They have very good hearing so they can run away. Male okapis fight their predators and other okapis. One of their predators is a leopard. Lots of people killed okapis for their skin. 4

• The okapi is very shy. They are also the last ancestors to the giraffes. Okapis live 15 to 20 years in captivity. The okapi was discovered in 1900. Its real name is okapia johntsoni. They even groom themselves with their tongue.
