Pacing Guide Purpose

Oklahoma City Public Schools pacing guide is intended to assist in pacing instruction and assist teachers in combining standards in meaningful ways to support student mastery. The length recommended for each unit is based on prioritization of standards leading to college and

career readiness. A framework has been established to support teacher planning and provide more consistency from class to class across the district. This framework will minimize the effects of students’ mobility within Oklahoma City Public Schools.

Flex Periods

These days can be used for extending lessons, reviewing challenging concepts, projects, differentiation and/or math games.

Standards for Mathematical Practice for Kindergarten

Mathematically proficient students will aim to do ALL of the following:

SMP 1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. SMP 2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. SMP 3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. SMP 4 Model with mathematics. SMP 5 Use appropriate tools strategically. SMP 6 Attend to precision. SMP 7 Look for and make use of structure. SMP 8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Every Day Math Terminology and Things to Know

RSA Recognizing Student Achievement notes highlight specific tasks that teachers can use for assessment to monitor children’s progress toward Grade-Level Goals. These tasks include the following:

Core Activities (Main Activity or Revisit activity)

Teaching Options

Everyday Mathematics games

My First Math Book pages

Other work samples (completed Math Masters pages, drawings, number stories, and so on)

*See Assessment Handbook (p. 10) for more information

Flex Days These days can be used for extending lessons, reviewing challenging concepts, projects, algorithms, differentiation and/or math games.

TLG Teacher’s Lesson Guide (Teacher’s Edition)

SMP Standard for Mathematical Practice (CCSS Thinking/Reasoning Skills)

Lit Some EDM lessons have Literature Connections. The title and author’s name for these books are found in the Games/Lit column of your pacing guide, as well as in the TLG.

Writing Some EDM lessons include a writing component, usually asking students to explain how or why they determined their answers to a specific Math Journal question. These writing prompts are a way for students to demonstrate their understanding of the concept. Justification of answers (process) is a critical component to CCSS. Kindergarten students complete this work in their My First Math Book beginning in lesson 5-2.

Vocabulary Bolded vocabulary words are Common Core Vocabulary. Non-bolded vocabulary words are Everyday Math Vocabulary words

Assessment Use Everydaymathonline.com to find student activities and assessment guides. Assessments can also be found in the Assessment Handbook

Projects The Projects can be used as performance tasks according to Pearson Guidelines.

CCSS Common Core State Standards

Games EDM Games provide essential practice of skills introduced during whole group lessons. Games are listed for each lesson in which they appear in the TLG. If possible, EDM Games should be used EVERYDAY. They do not have to be done during the math instructional block and can be incorporated into your daily routine (15 minutes at start of day, after recess, end of day, etc).

Themes Everyday Math provides optional thematic activities to use in the classroom. See Resources for the Kindergarten Classroom for more information.

Theme Information

A Working World (p. 6-10) The activities described in this section incorporate various mathematics concepts and skills as children learn about and role play different kinds of jobs.

All About Me (p. 11-15) An “All About Me” theme offers many meaningful opportunities for mathematical practice and applications, especially in the areas of measurement, number and numeration, and sorting and graphing attributes.

Animals All Around (p. 16-19) These activities involve children in using mathematics as they investigate animals of all types. They might compare animal sizes and shapes, count and graph votes about favorite animals, sort animals by characteristics, and make animal pictures and sculptures out of 2- and 3-dimensional shapes.

Dinosaurs (p. 20-24) Exploring dinosaurs offers numerous opportunities to integrate math in interesting ways, such as looking at attributes, sorting into groups, and measuring and comparing sizes.

Fairy Tales (p. 25-29) Literature-based themes using fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and folk tales offer rich opportunities to connect language arts and mathematics. Activities that include mapping, graphing, sorting, patterning, and counting enrich the stories and help to develop mathematics skills at the same time.

Families at Home (p. 30-33) Children can do many mathematics-linked activities to further their exploration of similarities and differences among family sizes, family routines, and the places where families live. As you do these activities, remember to be sensitive to the variety of children’s family and home situations.

Growing Things (p. 34-37) As children observe and care for plants outdoors, in the classroom, or at home, they have opportunities to count, sort, measure, and make comparisons.

Seasons (p. 38-41) Throughout the year, children observe changes in the weather and the seasons. These mathematical activities can be spaced to correspond with seasonal changes in your area.

Content Emphasis by Cluster—Kindergarten

Not all content in a given grade is emphasized equally in the standards. Some clusters require greater emphasis than the others based on the depth of the

ideas, the time that they take to master, and/or their importance to future mathematics or the demands of college and career readiness. In addition, an

intense focus on the most critical material at each grade allows depth in learning, which is carried out through the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

To say that some things have greater emphasis is not to say than anything in the standards can safely be neglected in instruction. Neglecting material will leave

gaps in student skill and understanding and may leave students unprepared for the challenges of a later grade. The following table identifies the Major

Clusters, Additional Clusters, and Supporting Clusters for kindergarten

Key Major Clusters o Supporting Clusters Additional Clusters

Counting and Cardinality

Know number names and the count sequence.

Count to tell the number of objects.

Compare numbers.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

Work with numbers 11-19 to gain foundations for place value. Measurement and Data

Describe and compare measureable objects.

o Classify objects and count the number of objects in categories.

Geometry

Identify and describe shapes.

Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes.
