With the water near 16 feet, there are not many places that can’t be reached on Lake Okeechobee. We have been nosing around and have gotten way back in the marsh areas where we have not been able to navigate for many years. There are fish back in the heavy cover areas of the marsh, but there are also bass and blue gill in the wide open areas that have just opened up from the rising water. The lake has offered terrific bass fishing for the past five or six years and with strong spawns and great fish management the fishing seems to be getting better each year. We have huge areas of native cover as well as hydrilla where small fry and other minnows can hide until they are big enough to survive and grow up. During the very early morning hours bass can be seen and heard as they chase

shad and shiners in the Kissimmee grass lines that surround the lake. We have been varying the blade and skirt colors that we use and have found that chrome, gold and copper blades all work in certain situations. Skirt colors we have used vary from several shades of white, to gold and also a dark skirts that is nearly black. All have proved effective, some better than others. Try something different and you may get surprised yourself. I have been seeing two to three anglers that are catching big blue gill and bass on a fly rod nearly every day. They are working the hard edges of the hydrilla lines with a small popping bug and are obviously having a great time, judging from the big smiles on their faces as they land fish after fish.

Join Main Street for a fond farewell to summer as we celebrate Labor Day weekend. Main Street will be hosting the Labor Day Festival throughout the weekend. Saturday 8/31 – Monday 9/2 we will have a variety of vendors, food, music and fun. Applebees will be sponsoring the Cornhole Competition, Bodacious the me-chanical bull will be there throughout the weekend and Mid Flor-ida will be sponsoring the Top Dog hot dog eating contest. Labor Day is coming! Be a part of this year’s parade being hosted by the B.R.A.T Club. The parade will begin at 10 A.M on September 2nd. The deadline for applications is August 30th. Applications for participants can be found at the Chamber of Commerce building.

The B.R.A.T Club is keeping busy by throwing a teen dance as well. The dance will be at the Freshman Cam-pus 610 SW 2nd Ave. Join the fun Saturday August 24th from 7 – 10 P.M. ages 12-16 for only $7.00 which includes pizza, chips and soda. The next meeting of the Community Collaborative Council, a part of the Shared Services Network of Okeechobee, will be Tuesday August 27, at 10:00 in the board room of the School Board office. The Okeechobee Community Theater will hold open auditions for roles for men and women in its first two productions of the season, “The Drowsy Chaperone” and “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Free Quit Smoking Now Classes are held in Raulerson Hospital’s Cafeteria. The one-hour classes meet weekly on Wednesday for six weeks. Participants who are eligible will receive free nicotine replacement therapy. The next set of Quit Smoking Now classes begins August 21st at 3:30 p.m. To register call: 877-819-2357.

The Better Breathers Class is a support group for people with COPD or other respiratory related issues.Better Breathers meet the first Wednesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in Raulerson Hospital’s In-Service Classroom.
