2 Olde Fashioned Christmas

The business and purpose of the organization shall be to educate the community on the history of What-com County, promote Pioneer Park and tourism, and bring together those people interested in preserving history and maintaining the log cabins and the collections at Pioneer Park. The corporation’s major func-tion will be to discover, collect and maintain any material, which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area.Ferndale Heritage Society Pioneer Park annual activities: Tours Tours of Historic Pioneer Park run from May 15 to September 15. Tours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11:30am to 4:30pm. Cost is $5 per person. Fashion Show A vintage fashion show is featured every few years in the spring. Education Program Hundreds of local school children attend a program that is ongoing at Pioneer Park for two weeks in May. Pioneer Swap meet Typically the second weekend in June. Come on down to Pioneer Park to see the many vendors and food service booths. Olde Fashioned Christmas The three-day event takes place annually the first weekend in December.Pioneer Park Rental Facilities:For your next event, enjoy the beauty of our rental facilities available to rent throughout the year. The Tillicum House accommo-dates 100 guests, and has a fully equipped kitchen.The Log Cabin Church is a unique quaint church that accommodates up to 50 guests. These two rental facilities are perfect for meetings, receptions, office parties, and holiday gatherings. We offer affordable full and partial day rental rates, and friendly de-posit requirements. Both facilities are located in historical Pioneer Park, 2002 Cherry Street, (off First Street) in Ferndale, WA.

On behalf of the Ferndale Heritage Society, Welcome to the 20th Annual Olde Fashioned Christmas at Pioneer Park.This year will be a very special Christmas in Pioneer Park. During the 2012 Olde Fashioned Christmas, we will be remember-ing the past 20 years of hosting the Olde Fashioned Christmas in the Pioneer Cabins. Each Christmas decorated cabin will invoke the memories, sights, and Christmas smells of the past 20 years. You will experience the smells of apples and cookies baking while the Volunteers greet you in period costumes. You will want to linger in each cabin as the feel of home refreshes your Christmas memories. Come and let us show you our appreciation of your past Christmas Time visits to Pioneer Park as we all create new memories for the 2012 Olde Fashioned Christmas.

Children will enjoy the hands on crafts including writing a letter to Santa, mailing the letter at the Pioneer Post Office and making a Christmas tree ornament. Santa and his helpers work very hard to make sure every letter to him is answered before Christmas.

Please bring this program along with you so you can join in the singing of Christmas Carols as you trot through downtown Ferndale on Free horse-drawn carriage rides. We appreciate your attendance and support at this very special community event. Don’t forget to thank our wonderful volunteers for their many hours of preparation and hosting. Volunteers as well as our guests to the park throughout this Olde Fashioned Christmas weekend share in the benefit of a good old warm and fuzzy feel-ing that only comes from Christmas joy. We will expect to see you back each and every year as so many families have made this annual event a family holiday tradition. Proceeds from our events maintain and support continued improvements and acquisi-tions for historic Pioneer Park.

Displayed in the style of the Christmas season in Whatcom County’s early pioneer days we invite you to reflect on past years. The Holeman School House

This cabin was built in 1890, as a one room house with a loft. The cabin is an example of some of the more primi-tive buildings of the early pioneers. Families celebrated Christmas as best they could, with what they had. These early pioneers made homemade gifts and celebrated by baking foods and treats that were a special part of the holiday season. In pioneer times, the schoolhouse would

have been decorated by children with bits of paper, rib-bons and natural greens from the woods. This year the schoolhouse will be decorated in much the same way, but showcasing space ships. Children will sit at old fashioned desks and write their letter to Santa Claus.

Barrett Post OfficeIf you need to mail a letter to St. Nicholas at his home in the North Pole, this historic post office has the most interesting mailbox you will ever find. It’s the Pioneer Park Post Office, staffed by Santa’s helpers to step up and help you postmark and mail your letter. Take a moment to admire the historic cards, letters and U.S. Mail his-tory that decorate this cabin for the holiday season. See if you can remember seeing some of the postage stamps on display from the last 20 years. Following in Santa’s giving spirit, children get a chance to pick a toy from the treasure chest, while adults choose a key and try to unlock one of the historic post office boxes.

Lopez House, The Print Shop

With long awaited excitement, heritage member, Brent Goodrich, found a repairman who could come to Pioneer Park and repair our beloved linotype press. See it actu-ally working when you stop in at the Lopez Print Shop. Printing machines like this were used to print traditional Christmas stories and newspapers. See examples on dis-play of plates and printer proofs. For visiting children, we will have cards available with a picture of a linotype machine on the cover. Using hand held rubber stamps, children can turn this card into a piece of art, a worthy gift for someone special this Christ-mas.

The Jenni HouseJust step onto the porch of the Jenni House. This once upon a time residence and stage coach cabin still wel-comes you with the smell of homemade Christmas cookies. These wonderful aromas draw you in and you can reminisce with memories of pioneer days gone by. Join in on the fun in the kitchen making yummy sugar cookies.

In keeping with the spirit of the Jenni House’s theme this year, children can weave their Christmas dreams into a Native American dream catcher in the craft room. The upstairs is sure to delight children of all ages with holiday music, festive dancing, and another tree full of charming homemade ornaments.

OuthouseDana Crediford is going to try and demonstrate for you through decorations the resourcefulness and use of cata-logs and other paper sources in the outhouse. Long ago people would use extra catalogs for reasons known, today we make crafts out of them..

The Barr BarnVisit us in the Barr Barn for the wintery smell of hay and horses. Feel their warm soft hair and enjoy the beauty of one of God’s finest creatures. Hear them softly crunching on fresh hay and shuffling through the soft straw bed-ding. See their frosty breath in the cold clear air. setting would have been an important part of the whole holiday season for pioneer families. After your tour, don’t forget to take a horse drawn wagon ride through the City of Ferndale. Singing carols is wel-come and encouraged. The sleigh bells will be ringing!

The Larson CabinDo you think Santa is watching you? Well you just might have to check out the top window in the Larson Cabin. Heidi Carlberg has over 200 Santa’s in her personal col-lection, and she has lovingly put many on display for you to enjoy this holiday season. Heidi was given a Santa by her mother many years ago, and so the collection began. There are traditional Santa’s as well as modern Santa’s. You will also see whimsical and subdued Santa’s. Some of the Santa’s are new, some are antiques, and some are family heirlooms. Heidi loves them all, as you will too, but there are several that hold a special place in her heart. Be sure to look through all the windows, you don’t know who is making his list and checking it twice to see who’s been naughty or nice.

Rogers House, Veteran’s Museum

This museum is dedicated to the men and women of the armed services who have served our country in the past and are cur-rently serving. We are forever grateful. Children will be making a Christmas craft project and all visitors are encour-aged to write on a recycled Christmas card a Christmas greeting. These cards will be mailed to men and women from Whatcom County serving abroad that won’t be home at Christmas time with their loved ones. Stop by, visit with the hosts and enjoy the artifacts in this spectacular cabin.


Parker House – General Store“Twenty Years of Memories” in the Parker House Gen-eral Store. The costumed and friendly storekeepers will feature many of their traditional favorites such as English crackers, candy cane seeds, penny candy and many other seasonal favorites to fulfill your visions of sugarplums. Our gift shop offers adults and children an opportunity purchase that special Christmas gift at an old fashioned price. We have lots of things to take home and love. All proceeds from the General Store go directly to the proj-ects and maintenance of Pioneer Park.The General store shopkeepers enjoy seeing new faces and the familiar patrons of the past twenty years and want to wish everyone “A Very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year”.

The PharmacyYe Ole Pharmacy is in the upstairs of the Parker Cabin and has a collection of artifacts dated back to 1904. When the local Ferndale Drug closed in 1999 the Poll-mans put the Pharmacy back together at Pioneer Park. One of the interesting artifacts is the Cash Register (with printing in it) made especially for Ferndale Pharmacy dated 1923.The Ferndale Drug began its humble story in Ferndale in 1904 under the name of Gem Pharmacy. Founder was J.M. Bearse who then sold to Paul Hood in 1908.We invite our younger guests to come on up to the pharmacy where you can receive a prescription “For Good Little Boys & Girls”. As these are special prescriptions, you can only have them filled by our Christmas nurse downstairs in the General Store.

The Shields HouseFor the majestic Shields House, it’s the smell of cinna-mon apple sauce that invites you in and beckons you to help peel apples with the old fashioned peeler. The sense of smell will linger but your sense of sight will take over and be treated to this year’s cabin theme, “Remember the Glitz”. Check out the special display in the cabinet as you move on to take a peek in the bathroom. See glitz from the past as shown by “… a girl’s best friend” display, thanks to Louise Sager.

In the living-room by the tinsel laden Christmas tree, there is a special person dressed in red waiting to meet visitors and listen to that special “wish list”. Don’t forget your camera.Climb up the stairs to the children’s bedroom where are lots of antique children’s toys that would have made some pioneer child very happy on Christmas morning long ago. While upstairs, craft a glitzy ornament to hang on your own tree or give as a present.

Foster House It was such a hit last year, we had to do it again. Display of the extensive Christmas village collection donated by the late Chet Speziale will again be set up by the whole Bagley family as a family holiday tradition event during the weekend of Thanksgiving. Upstairs, you will find a brand new local “Dairy” collection, joining the one of a kind, Sad Iron collection donated by Ethel McKay. Of course, while upstairs you’ll see more Traditional Christ-mas decorations to add to your holiday enjoyment.

The GranaryOne memory that Julie Aamot has had of hosting the granary in the past was that it was always cold in there because you had to keep the sliding door open. Thanks to Fred Sutcliffe and helpers, a new second layer door has been installed and should keep the temperature cozy this year. Stop in and see new items in the loft on display and make a super cute marshmallow ornament. The granary is an original tool shed where you can see many tools and grinding equipment on display that were used in pioneer days in our local farming and logging communities.

Log Cabin ChurchTracey Bisconner and Friends from Ferndale’s Christ the King Community church will be hosting and entertain-ing you in the Old Log Cabin Church. CTK Ferndale, hosted this cabin last year and is taking the opportunity to again serve the community in the Christmas Spirit.You’ll be greeted at the door, get a song book during Christmas caroling times and help celebrate Christmas by joining in with the chorus being sung during this holiday season. The old log church is like a sanctuary for many visitors to come in, sit down and feel the ambiance of music without the conundrum of the hectic season. Volunteers will dress up in period costumes (provided by Louise’s Closet) and there will be a nativity scene to your enjoyment also.

Tillicum HouseMerry Christmas to all the visitors at Olde Fashioned Christmas in Pioneer Park. After you have toured the park, be sure to stop into the Tillicum House for cookies and a warm drink. This is the best place to warm up those cold noses and hands. After your refreshment and warm up, catch the horse drawn carriage ride that leaves from

the Tillicum house. Of course the refreshments and the horse carriage ride are included with your paid admission price.Besides the cookies, we’ll have hot cider, cocoa, tea and coffee available. Hot dogs and the fixin’s will be available and sold separately. Local entertainers will be filling the room with Holiday music and the room and tree will be decorated with members photos from the last 20 years of Olde Fashioned Christmas events.

In the Park Pavilion, The Ferndale Library

Friends of the Ferndale Library will hold their annual Holiday Open House on November 30th, December 1st and 2nd, joining in the fun of Pioneer Park’s Olde Fashioned Christmas event. Find favorite classics, craft books, cookbooks and traditions of holidays around the world. Look for gift quality fiction and non-fiction, chil-dren’s books, movies and an array of other gift items for all ages. Friends will help children select gifts that they can purchase for family members. All at very low prices! Open during regular library hours: Friday and Saturday, 10am-6pm; Sunday, 1-5pm.


Peanut butter Cup Candy

Ingredients1 lb. butter or margarine2 cups peanut butter2&1/2 to 3 lb. confectioners’ sugar3 tsp. vanilla1 block Bakers chocolate(semi sweet or sweet)

DirectionsPreheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Sift together the flour, salt and baking soda; set aside. Cream together the butter, sugar, peanut butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla and milk. Add the flour mixture; mix well. Shape into 40 balls and place each into an ungreased mini muffin pan.Bake at 375 degrees for about 8 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately press a mini peanut butter cup into each ball. Cool and carefully remove from pan.

Popcorn Balls

Ingredients5 qts. popped popcorn-remove unpopped kernels1 cup butter1 & 1/3 cups sugar½ cup light corn syrup1 tsp. vanillaFood coloring (optional)

Directions

Melt butter in medium pan. Add sugar, corn syrup and food coloring (if desired). Bring to a boil, stirring often, reduce heat and simmer 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Add vanilla and blend well. Pour over popcorn, mixing constantly. Let stand 2 minutes to cool. Shape popcorn balls with damp hands. Arrange on baking sheet to set. Wrap each one in a baggie and store in a cool dry place. Makes 12-20 balls depending on size.

I sit by the fire bringing up past Olde Fashioned Christmas memories. I remember all the different ideas. They usually start in October and build right up to the last day. My favorite was the Norwegian theme. We had my mother’s old skis and reindeer boots and wore Norwegian costumes.One year we popped corn in the old screen popper over a hot plate hidden in the stove hole. Corn cobs hung on a string across the kitchen wall. One year we made a child size angel and hung a fluffy feather boa across the kitchen wall. Angel cut out cookies baked in the toaster oven. As new cookies went in, done cookies came out for the children who made them. Once we had paper gingerbread men on the wall, made gingerbread men cookies and decorated the tree with real cookies. The only problem was: the moisture in the cabin made the cookies limp and many fell off! We almost always had theme based cookies except the year we had a huge bowl of dough and children threw in nuts and fruits and stirred and stirred. One year I said I was tired of cook-ies so we made cheese slice cutouts for crackers but most were cookies, rolled in your hand, cut outs, pressed designs.We could write a book about clever theme based crafts. My fa-vorite was a small Indian pouch of soft leather, sewn by each child on the old treadle sewing machine. Maybe you were there and helped make cookies and crafts year after year. Maybe you have your own children now and they come and keep up the traditions!

My earliest memories of the first Olde Fashioned Christmas event was that we only opened up three cabins at Pioneer Park. The Shields house was decorated with lots of natural greenery by members of the newly organized Ferndale Heritage Society. It was cold inside the cabins and members were dressed in lots of warm woolen clothing. The Jenni House was decorated by Ferndale’s Jensen Floral, Joye Floral and the Whole-She-Bang Floral businesses. At some point in time, we did purchase small radiator looking electric heaters, but they were only warm when you were almost sitting on them. The log church was also open with more of the natural greenery like cedar boughs and holly branches, I can remember the wonderful smell. Refreshments were available in the Tillicum House and it was warm in there. Putting on the Olde Fashioned Christmas was the first time the Pioneer Park cabins were decorated and open for an event in December. In those early years we opened up the same weekend as the Chamber of Commerce had their tree lighting, to start the season, at Pioneer Park.

Linda HarkleroadI’m sitting here at the computer trying to capture my most pre-dominant memories over the last 20 years of the Olde Fashioned Christmas event. Unfortunately the first things popping into my head are all the groan emotions that are so typical when you’re the coordinator of such a many dimensional event like this one. Why do the anxiety creators like; never having enough volun-teers, who’s got some cedar boughs to donate, will they ever get that cabin decorated, always overshadow the smiley heart emo-tions? Putting the brakes on groan memories, I really do have smiley heart emotions that fill my thoughts, and I guess that’s what keeps me wanting to be part of this wonderful, just a bit slower paced, celebration of the Christmas season.Knowing the many faces of the families who have made this event a part of their holiday tradition is pure joy. Little kids walking into the Shields Cabin arms opened wide and squealing “Santa” are something you can never get enough of. I will never forget standing exhausted in the middle of the beautifully light-ed park, 30 minutes before the Friday night start, with Chief Knapp and he shakes his head and says “This is why I love Fern-dale…”. That was pure community appreciation and the heartfelt reassurance that all this work wasn’t in vain. Achy feet, or those years of frozen feet seem to be forgotten. The obstacles that we had to overcome during the year of the icy roads and snow fall, made better by folks like Fred Sutcliffe who came out early in the morning to shovel paths through the drifts. And he didn’t know if the event would go on or be cancelled that day. These are the things that get remembered and also make a big difference as to how we perceive the world around us. For these memories and my involvement with the Olde Fashioned Christmas event and the people, I am grateful. Let the smiley heart emotions con-tinue. I did not join the Ferndale Heritage Society until after I re-tired from the Library System, having worked there for 31 years. Education, learning, architecture and history are very important to me, so the Holeman school house at Pioneer Park is a good fit. I like to see the interest in the children’s faces when we talk about what the children did and learned in 1890. I have always volunteered and find it very satisfying. The challenge right now is to get the West Mountain View School building moved to the park. This has been an on-going concern and passion of mine for the last twenty years.

Paul & Gail Nelson Reinbow Ranch Wagon & Carriage Service

Reinbow Ranch has been providing Carriage and Wagon rides for the Olde Fashioned Christmas for 17 years. We received a call asking if we would give rides for the 3rd Annual Event. At that time, the event was small, and we brought a single horse car-riage for the Saturday rides. By the fifth event, we had to upgrade to a team pulling a covered wagon that seated fourteen people and gave rides Friday and Saturday nights. For the last twelve years we have used our covered wagon that seats over twenty guests and extended our hours. We provide wagon rides every hour that the Olde Fashion Christmas is open! It continues to be a favorite attraction for the children and the young at heart. Four years ago, it snowed and rained, and the streets were cov-ered with ice. We couldn’t safely take our horses out on the slip-pery roads for wagon rides. There were going to be some very disappointed people! Someone suggested that we house them in the Barr Barn so that at least the children could see the horses. We quickly scrambled to put together a pen with hay for the horses, and put up a few Christmas decorations. It turned out to be such a huge success with everyone, that now every year we decorate the barn and stall a team of our draft horses inside for everyone to enjoy up close and personal. From year to year, you never know what other surprises you may find in the Barr Barn.We appreciate your support of the Ferndale Heritage Society.


Tracey Williams Bisconer’s History of the Ferndale Heritage Society

I came to Ferndale in the fall of 1989. I moved here from Ju-neau, Alaska to go to school at Western Washington Univer-sity. I hoped to finish my BA and get my teaching credentials. I planned to head back up north to teach in remote areas in Southeast Alaska; fishing towns and island villages. I lived in a converted chicken coup on Birch Bay Lynden Road, then to a loft in a barn on Portal Way. I don’t remember the actual date of the big flood and ice storm of ‘89’90, but I remember seeing a notice on a college bulletin board asking for volunteer help digging out Hovander Park. Mud and silt and broken tree limbs from the four-foot flood had to be dug out of all the out buildings and the barn. It was the first time I saw the park and of course it was at its worst.After the storm, I was hired by Whatcom County Parks to work at Hovander for the summer. I became fascinated with the his-tory of the county and Ferndale. In the spring after the storm, I visited Pioneer Park for the first time and fell in love with it. I started volunteering at Pioneer Park while I was working at Hovander and going to school. I was a very hard worker back then and wanted to be a part of this friendly community.I graduated from Western in 1992 and decided not to go back to Alaska to teach. I wanted to stay in Whatcom County and work for the parks.I happily joined the Ferndale Heritage Society in 1997 and dis-covered another unique way to serve the community; volunteer-ing in the cabins during the Old Settlers Pioneer Picnic and Olde Fashioned Christmas. There were no warm stoves back then, just warm clothes borrowed from Louise’s basement. I was one of the first employees hired by Ferndale City Parks to do Historic Tours at Pioneer. I was also conducting tours across the river at Hovander Homestead Park. Like other members of the Ferndale Heritage Society, I too have experienced joys and sorrows and always found the members to be encouraging and supportive; they still very much are. I’m glad I have found many good friends in the Heritage Society and plan on volunteering as long as they’ll have me. Yours truly, Tracey Williams Bisconer


Holiday Crafts

Prepare the glass surface by clean-ing it with window cleaner. Then select any flat evergreen pieces you would like to use. Coat the greenery with spray adhesive.

Wait a few seconds for the adhesive to get tacky and then attach each piece to the container with the ends hanging from the bottom of the container.

Allow the greenery to dry for a few minutes. Then trim the bottoms with sturdy scissors, floral snips, or garden shears.

Fabric Ornament

Start with any size foam ball and mark sections with a sharpie. Then cut into those lines with a utility knife.

Cut fabric strips about 1/2 inch wider and longer than your foam sections and taper them off at top and bottom.

Press fabric into lines with BACK of utility blade [or use a butter knife - if children are helping].

Tie twine or ribbon to a floral pin and press into top of ornament!
