Biographical Note:

Olga Emelia Fallen was born October 10, 1931 in Brunswick, Georgia, to Edward

James and Olga Westermark Fallen. She graduated from the Glynn Academy in

Brunswick where she received the honor of “Greatest Female Athlete” in the history of

the school. At Georgia State College for Women she received her BA followed by an MS

from the University of Tennessee.

Miss Fallen came to teach at Baylor University in September of 1956 with dance

and swimming as her first areas of instruction. However, during her career she taught and

coached women’s sports ranging from bowling to tennis and was the women’s head

basketball and softball coach from 1974-1979. In addition to these duties she was an

assistant professor of physical education and coordinator of women’s athletics for Baylor

University. Additionally, Miss Fallen was responsible for developing the women’s

athletic program from its beginnings in the physical education department to its inclusion

in the athletics department in 1972. In doing so, she helped lay the foundations of today’s

women’s athletics program at Baylor University.

By being in the newly created position of athletics coordinator, a position she held

from 1972-1979, Fallen was able to promote her passion for women’s sports while at

Baylor University. As was the case with many institutions, women’s athletics at Baylor

University historically had less coaching staff, financial resources, facilities, and

scholarship opportunities than did the men’s sports program. Title IX, a section of the

Education Amendment of 1972, helped to alleviate some of this inequality. Its intent is to

give women’s athletic programs an equal share of the resources needed to function on an

equal level as the men’s.

Fallen had a history of success in winning games and in recruiting some top players

to the Baylor women’s sports program. For example, in 1973, the first scholarship was

given to a female athlete at Baylor University; this player was Suzie Snider Eppers who

came from nearby Robinson High School. She finished her four years at Baylor

accumulating 3,861 points and was named to Kodak’s All-American team. In doing so,

Eppers became the university’s first basketball All-American since 1948. From 1972-

1978, Fallen’s win loss record for the women’s basketball team was an impressive 140-

47. Additionally, the team made several trips to the AIAW (Association for

Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) basketball nationals during this period.

In April of 1979, athletic director Jack Patterson did not renew Olga Fallen’s

contract as women’s athletic coordinator or as coach of the women’s basketball and

softball teams. Prior to this dismissal, an April 4, 1979 article in the Baylor Lariat

featured an article mounting criticisms against Fallen’s management of the Baylor

women’s sports program.

After her time as athletics coordinator and coach came to an end in 1979 Fallen

continued to teach at Baylor University as a tenured faculty member in the physical

education department. In 1997 Miss Fallen received her 40-year service pin from Baylor

University and decided to retire that same year. The Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame

admitted her in 1999. Olga Fallen died on May 8, 2009.

Scope and Content: This collection includes documents accumulated by Olga Fallen during her time in

the Baylor University women’s athletic department and as a student in college. A large

part of the collection relates to women’s basketball with much of the material dating

between 1972 and 1978; for example, there is a large amount of basketball statistics (11

document boxes). However, the collection includes items relating to other sports as well

such as softball, swimming, track and field, and volleyball.

Various items relating to intramural and extramural activities, Baylor Olympics,

and other women’s teams such as the Baylor Ripplettes synchronized swimming team are

in the collection. Additionally, Olga Fallen saved material relating to educational

amendment Title IX and included are student essays, news articles, and documents from

its early stages. Further, Fallen saved many news articles relating to equal rights for

women in sports and many other clippings regarding women athletics.

Other items in the collection include: work-related correspondence and financial

documents, handbooks, catalogues, event programs, directories, sport’s photographs,

women’s athletics surveys, magazines, team rosters, playbooks, recruiting information,

and trophies.

Organization and Arrangement: Some of the original order of the Olga Fallen Collection was lost during transfer

from the athletics department and storage. In the spring of 2011, members of the Baylor

Museum Studies’ MST 5324-Archival Collections & Museums class preliminarily

processed the collection for a semester project. A year later the entire collection was

processed to current Texas Collection archival standards. During storage the collection

was exposed to a minor mold outbreak and many of the affected items were recopied to

preserve their information. The order in which the collection is arranged and processed is

in a manner to facilitate research done by topic or date.

Arrangement in the Olga Fallen Collection is in 4 series: I. Personal, II.

Sports/Coaching, III. Organizational Material, IV. Subject Clippings, and V. Oversized.

Notes:

In Series I. Personal: Fallen’s College Years, the items listed in brackets are the titles of

sets of documents removed from 3-ring binder type notebooks.

In Series II. Sports/Coaching: In some cases, the folders labeled “basketball statistics”

contain other items from games such as tournament programs or newsletters.

In Series III. Organizational Material: The names of the organizations are typed out

completely within this document. On the actual folders within this collection acronyms

are used instead.
