Invocation Pastor: Give thanks to the Lord for God is good. People: God’s steadfast love endures forever. (Psalm 107:1)

*Call to Worship Pastor: For all those who have lived what it means to follow Jesus, we give thanks, O Lord.

People For those who have taught us about witness and the power of love, we give thanks, O Lord. Pastor: For those who work in our church so we may know what it means to serve, we give thanks, O Lord. People: For all the saints, who rest from their labors, and those who labor still, we give thanks, O Lord. Pastor: Praise be to God, who continually inspires and guides workers and witnesses. All: Open our hearts and spirits, O Lord, and help us to continue to become good workers for you. Let us worship God!

WE RESPOND Invitations Prayer of Confession

We confess our inclination, O God, to sense that we are alone in the faith. We neglect the history of those who have gone before us. We take for granted their lives and living. Have mercy upon us, O Lord. Call to mind our mothers and fathers in the faith, who ran the race before us, and help us draw strength from their examples. Forgive us of our sins we pray….(all confess sin in silence)

Words of Assurance Pastor: Let us remember the goodness of God in the lives of the saints.

Let us draw strength from the cloud of witnesses that surrounds us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Sunday, November 1, 2020 All Saints Day

All Saints Day (November 1) is the Church’s Memorial Day. It is a time to remember those who have died in the faith of Christ and to be thankful for them. On this day, we honor what Jesus the Christ has done in and through the witness of the saints through the ages. At Olivet UMC today, we honor members and family who have died during the year – with the speaking of their name, the lighting of a candle and the ringing of the bell. As believers in the Body of Christ, we have faith in life after death.

Today’s scripture passage from 1 Thessalonians was written by the apostle Paul. Written to encourage new Christians in the church at Thessalonica, Paul offers how a Christian is to live. Followers of Jesus are to remember that even in the midst of struggles, God is in control. No matter what happens, God is always with us. Recognizing this, Christians are to talk with God in prayer. Recalling all the gifts that God has given us prompts us to give thanks. Doing so helps Christians, no matter the circumstances, to live an extra-ordinary life.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for the witness of the saints who have gone before us and for the challenge to live like saints in response to Jesus’ call to faithful discipleship. Amen.
