DESCRIPTION
May 2014 Olivet Baptist Church Hawaii NewsletterTRANSCRIPT
Many look at New Year’s Day as the time to step into another chapter in their lives. But, summertime ‘turns the page’ for many of our youth, high school seniors, and college students. Are we forward-looking to the future? Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.”
While reflecting on
our positive and
uplifting memories,
let us take some
decisive steps to
make a special
difference in the lives whose paths we cross, as
well as purposeful choices in our own lives – all in
bringing honor to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Tim

On April 18, 2014 Olivet Baptist Church members got together for the 3rd annual Bento Blessings. Started by a group led by Dean Morihara, Olivet members and friends gather to package bentos of local favorites prepared by Gary Mizushima and Morris Miyamoto. With each bento, a message of the Good News of Easter was shared with the surrounding community.

THE MIRACLE
OF ANGELS This year, nearly 70 volunteers joined together to fellowship with each other and to venture out into the community to deliver meals to our neighbors, including the surrounding elderly care facilities, local businesses, as well as the Blood Bank, the Pet Doctor, and homeless in the area. On Good Friday, over 500 bentos were packaged and delivered. Many of those who received the bentos showed their gratitude in a variety of ways. Many provided monetary donations to the church, others wrote letters of thanks, while others responded by attending the Easter worship service. Let’s continue to pray for those who have been touched by the “bento blessings.” If we have been able to help one person come to know Christ, that is an amazing testimony. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and to those who donated food to make it all possible. Together we can do amazing things!

This is the view from our bedroom window. When I wake up in the morning, I look out and see those telephone poles up on the mountain. This picture is poor quality, but if you look closely, those telephone poles look like crosses on a hill. In my half-conscious, morning state of mind, I looked upon this sight in awe. Suddenly I was transported to another place. I was looking upon the place where Jesus Christ laid His life down. I stood before the grounds where the blood of Jesus was shed for my sins. Sadness came over me. Deep hurt filled my heart. “For my sins Jesus, you did this.” Now my own blood began to course through my veins getting my body ready for the day. Gazing upon this sight my heart of sorrow was replaced with joy. The cross is empty. Jesus is ALIVE! Not only have I been justified by His blood (Romans 5:9), I am sanctified by His resurrection in that He defeated the curse of death

CELEBRATING A NIGHT OF WORSHIP
Thank you to all of you who came out on April 25 for a wonderful night of worship with members from multiple congregations. We had over 100 visitors fill the sanctuary with worship music led by the praise band To and From. The theme of the evening was liberate. We rejoiced in the promise that God’s grace liberates us from our sins when we place our faith in Him. We heard powerful moving testimony from two of the band members, with a wonderful message from Pastor Jason. Keep a look out for our next night of worship coming this summer. We hope you join us in singing praises to our Lord and Savior!

brought on by sin (Romans 6:1-11). Being sanctified by the Spirit through a life of repentance, we have the hope and promise of eternal glory in the presence of God.
Easter has offered us an opportunity to reflect on these things. Such a glorious gospel! When I look out my bedroom window, I can be reminded of the reason I wake every morning. Now that this season of remembrance has come and gone, how will you remember daily your purpose in life? As a believer of Jesus Christ you have made a commitment to
lay down your life for God. We have sacrificed our purposes in life for God’s purpose. When we work, we do so to fulfill God’s purpose. When we raise our kids, we do so to fulfill God’s purpose. All that we do, we do for the glory and honor of God.
How will you remind yourself daily? Place a picture on your refrigerator. Tape up a scripture verse on your bathroom mirror. Commit to a morning prayer time with your spouse and/or children. Play a song every morning to remind you. Don’t limit your remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to one season of the year. The gospel needs to be in our hearts daily and throughout our day. Not only will that remind us of the sole reason we live, it allows us then to share the Good News with others. - Jason

LIBERA E
1. Rebecca McGuire Olivet Baptist Church Preschhol Director - This past month of
April, we have been busy with learning about the true meaning of Easter. We learned
how Jesus loved us so much that He gave us His Son. We had a little fun with bunnies
and eggs along the way, always trying to focus on the true meaning of Easter. Pray
for our staff as we meet together every Wednesday for Bible study, as the teachers
and aides learn about God's Word and application in our daily lives.
2. Annette and Fred Mortimer - Aloha Brothers and Sisters in Christ. It is with sadness that we leave the islands this
week. We wanted to say how much the Ilikai Chapel has meant to us. We have had great fellowship from the day we arrived, and it is so nice to help set up on Saturday with Carol and Jim and people that drop in. Fred practices his music for the next day and the time flies by so quickly.
Sundays are a blessing filled with great messages that make you think how you can change your life, and music that lifts you up, thanks to the worship team. There are beautiful smiles and “welcomes” all around. Thank you one and all. We pray God will allow us another return visit next year. Bless you all. Love in Christ.
3. Senior Ohana On Thursday, March 20, twenty-eight seniors toured the Iolani Palace. Joan, our tour guide, led us to the stairs leading to the second floor. The stairway is cordoned off and not used to preserve the carpet and stairs. We took the elevator to the second floor to the bright waiting room. We proceeded through the King’s quarters and viewed various sitting rooms, his bedroom as well as the Queen’s bedroom. There was the first telephone in the hallway. The throne room was the last room we entered. There were elaborate covered chairs along the east windows. The King and Queen’s crowns, along with a sword and scepter, were encased in glass. The throne chairs are located approximately 15-20 feet from the viewers. Upon ending the tour of Iolani Palace, the Sr. Ohana crossed King Street to the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center. We viewed the film “When Fear Reigned.” Pat Nomura was one of four interviewed regarding their experiences in the internment camp. She was honored with a lei and a copy of the video. After the tour, we headed for the Golden Palace for a delicious dim sum lunch.

2 Timothy 1:5-6 “I remember the sincere faith you have, the kind of faith that your grand-
mother Lois and your mother Eunice also had. I am sure that you have it also. For this reason I remind you to keep alive the gift that God gave
you when I laid my hands on you.”
【Today’s English Version】
As we approach Mother’s Day this month, I remember
my mother who passed away last year on June 27, 2013.
It is amazing how quickly time flies. The first chapter of
2 Timothy talks about the genuine faith Timothy’s
grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice both had. My
grandmother, KatsukoTateishi, had a conversion
experience at age 12 in Japan. She wrote in her
autobiography “Mother Prays” that at the last day of the
children’s revival meetings, the cross of Jesus’ love and
light stroke into her heart. She could not stop crying as
she confessed Jesus as her Savior and Lord. She
surrendered her life to Christ and later studied at the
Bible College, where she met my grandfather. After they
were married, they went to Shanghai, China to spread the
good news of Christ there. That was where my mother,
Sachiko, was born. The genuine faith was passed on to
her. My mother also surrendered her life to Christ and
married my father, who was about to be a pastor in Japan,
and later at Olivet Baptist Church.
I appreciate my mother’s faithful dedication to Christ that
nurtured my faith in God also. Even though my mother is
already in heaven , I would like to say “Happy Mother’s
Day!” This is a reminder for me to keep alive the gift of
His love and salvation that God gave me to share with
others.

Aloha Ushers and Greeters Committee
Have you ever noticed the happy, smiling faces as you walk through the parking lot and enter the church? Well those special, kind, loving individuals are volunteers of our Aloha ushers and greeters committee. This ministry is one of the most important groups we have in our church as they are the first people that visitors meet when they arrive. Not only do they greet visitors, they also provide directions, help locate appropriate Sunday school groups, and just make them feel welcomed in general. We are always looking for individuals to serve in this capacity. Faith McFatridge is the chairperson of the committee. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer one Sunday or more a month, please contact Faith or the church office to get more information.
Worship Audio Visual Team
Would you like to serve on the worship team? Do you have an interest in computers, sound, and lights? Did you know that the audio visual techs are a vital part of the praise and worship team? This ministry supports the Pastor and worship coordinator, as well as the praise band and choir. They control the sound, lights, and the visual slides that are used during the worship service. If you have a passion in this area, we would love to meet with you. We are looking for volunteers to help prepare worship music slides (at home or at the church), rehearse with the praise band on Wednesday nights, or run the equipment for the 8:30 and 11:00am services. Volunteers are welcome to choose from once a week to every week, depending on your schedule and flexibility. We are always looking for individuals to serve in this capacity. Hannah Tomita, the worship coordinator, is the person you need to meet. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Hannah or the church office to get more information.
