Sunday, April 10, 2016 10:45 AM

* Call to Worship:

Bless the Lord for always being near and watching over us. Thank You, Jesus, for

always being near even when we did not realize it was You. Out of love and concern You renew our spirits when You call out to us and tell us how to do better.

Sometimes what You tell us to do is as small as putting our net on the right side of the boat like the disciples when they were fishing. Obedience to the Lord in even

the small adjustments will yield greater blessings than our nets can hold. Thank You,

Lord, because in these adjustments we eventually receive both blessings and spiritual renewal. Hallelujah.

* Evocation (in unison)

Everlasting God, you are our greatest reward. Yet, there are seasons when You require us to make seemingly small moves that eventually yield major spiritual renewal.

Great is our God, who at times makes small alterations produce divine progressions. In Jesus matchless name we pray. Amen

Scripture: John 21:1-7

1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

Spiritual Growth Challenge April 2016: Renewal

Week 2 – Practice Dates: April 10th – April 16th

Text: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and per-fect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV)

Thought: We have often heard it said that “we are in this world, but not of this world.” This text draws a distinction between the patterns of this world and the will of God. I’m sure we can agree that much of what we see taking place in this world is not of God. The apostle Paul admonishes us to avoid imitating and adapting to the designed behavior of worldliness. In this text, the difference between “conformed” and “transformed” is that conforming seeks to follow and obey the values and priorities of this world whereas transforming implies change and conversion to the values and priorities living a Christian life. A transformed mind is renewed because it can comprehend the good, pleasing and perfect will of God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are equipped with discernment. As we grow spiritually, we are better able to distinguish between that which is of God and that which is of this world. We’ve also heard it said that “a mind is a terrible thing to waste”; I daresay that a mind is a powerful thing to possess. When we give our hearts to Jesus and surrender our wills to God, do we also invite the Holy Spirit to influence our thinking? There are so many things competing in this world for our time and attention. If we exercise our God given will to make choices, and we accept the fact that we are “set apart”, then we can under-stand how important it is to guard our minds. We cannot serve two masters: Either we serve this world or we serve God. Who or what possesses your mind?

Task: Think on these things … To what extent (i.e., in what areas of my life) do I conform to this world? Do I consider myself a transformed being?

If so, how so? If not, why not? Has my mind been / is my mind being renewed?

If so, how so? If not, why not? Am I able to test and approve (i.e., know and understand) God’s will?

If so, how so? If not, why not? How do I define God’s good, pleasing and perfect will?

A Time to Pray: Heavenly Father, Lord of all, I bless Your Holy name. I thank you for waking me this morning, in my right mind. I ask that you continue to provide me with protection so that I may remain in my right mind. I plead the blood of Jesus as my covering to guard against the en-ticement to conform to the patterns of this world. I pray for the presence of mind and mental strength to resist any and all things that are contrary to Your good, pleasing and perfect will in my life. Holy Spirit, help and guide me throughout each and every day so that I yield to Your prompt-ing regularly. Help me to continually rebuke the influence of the enemy and the seduction of the priorities and values of this world. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

SERVE AND GROW!

GO Walk

TODAY after services

Everyone experiences stress, whether it’s a bad day at work, car trouble, financial trouble or a very busy schedule. Stress contributes to child abuse. With too much stress, it’s hard to parent effectively. Child Abuse can irreparably damage a child, and may cause that child to abuse in the future. Signs of stress include: feeling angry or irritable most of the time, feeling hopeless, crying easily, constant worrying, overeating, not eating enough or trouble sleeping are among common stress factors, which could lead to lashing out at your children or harming them, without meaning to. Child Abuse is against the law. Help is available - to prevent child abuse before it starts, seek help! Find a support group, speak with a counselor. Guidance is also available at: www. New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
