Dear Olivet Family: A few days ago, I read an article from Christianity Today entitled, “The Myth of Happy Parenting.” As I perused through the article, one particular quote struck me, “We want our children to be perfect, and we want to be perfect parents.” What does that mean? In the church we rightly acknowledge that children are gifts from God. But the truth is that parenting is not always easy or fun. There is pain and heartache. Rachel Stone says that, “The way of the parent is often the way of the Cross: the glory and grace and joy in it come at significant cost.” You give up your time, energy, money, and personal desires for your children. Saying this, I believe that we have a moral obligation as parents to fulfill a responsibility to our children, regardless of whether it makes us happy. By God’s grace, duty often yields not to happiness but to something better: joy. As the early church in Acts teaches us, joy can coincide with suffering and struggle. C.S. Lewis wrote that, “Gift love longs to serve or even suffer” for the beloved. And what better way can we demonstrate “gift love” than to take seriously the discipleship of our children. This calls us to fulfill our obligation to “train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray” Proverbs 22.6.

I hope that every member of our Olivet family will attend the Fully Convinced conference with Chap Bettis on October 24 and 25. There is much that we can learn about how to Biblically disciple the children of Olivet Baptist Church. It is said that the way of “gift love” necessarily entails cost, sacrifice, and pain – even sleepless nights, but the end result is joy. Sincerely,

Pastor Tim

Ogenki Desuka? お元気ですか? “I Have a Dream!”

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

Matthew 5:9 (NKJV)

“Peace Making” was the theme I chose for the retreat at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church Japanese Mission in Atlanta, Georgia. Pastor Hiro Sakamaki and his wife Kazumi, friends from high school days when we attended a Baptist Youth camp in Japan, invited me to speak. Hiro has been ministering in Atlanta since 2008, following the ministry started by a retired missionary couple, Bob and Betty Boatwright, 24 years ago. As I prayed for the theme of the retreat, which I was given total freedom to choose, somehow I was lead to speak on “Peace of God.” I did not know until I got to Atlanta that Pastor Martin Luther King, Jr. was born there. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. I visited his museum and Ebenezer Baptist Church where he succeeded his grandfather and father as pastor. I felt that talking about the Peace of God was an appropriate theme for the retreat in Atlanta. Certainly Jesus, the Son of God, is the peacemaker, and as we follow and implement His way of peace, we are also called sons of God. Rev. King’s last sermon before he was shot and killed was about him being at peace with God since he had seen the promised land and the Glory of God. He sounded like he knew that his life was in danger and could be taken away anytime, but he was not afraid. The Bible says that we can also be called children of

God as we practice the peace of God. (TEV) Matthew 5:9 "Happy are those who work

for peace; God will call them His children!” Rev. King’s dream is still in the process of being realized on this earth and we should be glad that we are one of the participants of God’s peace. I also learned that the CNN headquarters is in Atlanta, and Coca Cola started there also. I thank God for the wonderful learning experiences in Atlanta and great fellowship with my friend’s family and his church. May the Peace of God dwell in each one of you!

In Christ’s love, Makito

The Tuesday, August 21st activity for the Olivet Senior Ohana was an extra-special event. Thirty eager participants made the hour-long bus ride to and from Kualoa Ranch on the north side of Oahu. For many, it was the first time to visit the pristine ranch with a magnificent history spanning many generations. Ancient Hawaiians considered Kualoa one of the most sacred places on the island. It was the residence of kings and a place of refuge and sanctuary. In 1850, King Kamehameha III sold 622 acres of the land to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd, a Christian missionary doctor who served as personal advisor to King Kamehameha III. The initial land sale included prime ranch land and all

fishing rights including Mokoli`i, the small island that we now call “Chinaman’s Hat.” Later, additional acreage in the Hakipu`u and Ka`a`awa valleys were purchased by Dr. Judd’s son; this increased the size of the estate to the 4,000 acres that it is today. Now the ranch is owned by the Morgan family, direct descendants of Dr. Judd. Our group (30 of us) boarded a flat boat for the tour of

Moli`i fishpond. From the water, our tour guide

pointed out the boundaries of the ranch – majestic

mountain ranges and verdant valleys. The vastness of

Kualoa is awesome. More than that, it was inspiring to

learn that Kualoa is committed to preservation of the

ranch’s agriculture and conservation of the land.

Kualoa Ranch focuses on livestock production,

aquaculture and diversified agriculture. The ranch

hosts 12,000 school children each year for educational

tours, sharing the history, geology and flora and fauna

of the property. Many Hollywood movies and TV

shows have been filmed at the ranch, among them:

Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, 50 First Dates and episodes

of Lost. Kualoa’s primary mission continues to be

“malama `aina” –the stewardship of caring for and

preserving the native environment.

Following the boat ride and garden tour, the group enjoyed a picnic lunch prepared by the Senior Ohana Council and served on the lanai of the sprawling pavilion. After the full morning, many of the Golden Agers napped on the bus ride back to the church in the city.

Seniors Take In The Sights at Kualoa Ranch

We are the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Sunday school class. The class was renamed to match the learning phase of the group. We want the kids to talk. We want them to learn. Most of all, we want them to know God. These young learners share stories about their families and their lives. They have good imaginations and creative energies. Each child is unique and display their talents to create a synergy that can only be God.

They inspire and challenge us to follow God’s will. It is a journey of laughter, prayers, and fun. We treasure our time with them. Aloha,

“But Jesus called the children to Him and said, “Let the little children

come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to

of God like a little child will never enter it.” Luke 18:16-17

Inspire and Encourage Our Children: Raising a Family to Love and Follow Jesus Raising our children to love and follow Jesus Christ is our highest parenting priority. Unfortunately, most parents are woefully uninformed and unequipped in this area. They are leaving it all to the church. This month, Olivet Baptist Church, with the cooperation of the Shiraki Foundation, is proud to welcome Chap Bettis, as he leads in his exciting Fully Convinced Parenting Seminar on October 24-25 at Olivet Baptist Church. Chap and his wife Sharon have raised four children who are walking with the Lord and have a heart connection. Chap served as a pastor for 25 years and understands the different challenges families face. He has presented these materials to many groups over the years. In this seminary, we want to inspire, encourage, exhort and equip the parents in this vital area of living the Christian life. Parents will be challenged, inspired, and equipped to take up their God-given role. Pastors and youth pastors can cast a vision for family involved discipleship. This is a free conference, open to all, with a nominal workbook fee of $4 per book. We encourage you to recommend this seminar to your family, friends, and neighbors. Childcare will also be provided for children 6th grade and under. Lead by Example GETTING CONNECTED

When I was visiting with the Arashiro’s one night I caught a glimpse of something familiar down the hall in the master bedroom. “Does someone have sleep apnea?” Terrance affirmed that it was his CPAP machine. I told him I recognized it because I too have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine. He quipped back, “CPAP users recognize each other from the strap marks on their face.” As a fellow CPAP user I completely understood what he was saying and still chuckle when I think about that. It’s interesting how we have these connections with people through affinities. We have groups through serious things like health issues all the way to casual things like hobbies and leisure activities. There are many ways to get connected. The Bible calls the church the Body of Christ. Over and over again it is seen as the body. Ephesians 4:15-16 says, “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” We are joined together through the commonality of our faith in Christ to grow in love. Do you feel joined with the body? Let me offer a couple suggestions:

Share a meal. Identify someone you want to get to know better and see if they would like to go to lunch after church or grab coffee during the week.

Prayer. Pray with each other. Pray for each other. Prayer connects us with God and when we pray for one another, we invite that person into that communion.

Testify. Share with each other what God is doing in your life. Serve. There are many ministries that we have here at Olivet Baptist church. Get involved.

Serving with your brothers and sisters creates a unique connection. Get connected. We are starting a small group initiative called Discipleship Communities. This is to

build connection outside of Sunday morning. Right now we are working on two pilot groups so we can work out any challenges in the process. If you are open to hosting a small group in your home, let me know! I would love to start adding more groups.

I’m excited about the growth potential of the body here at Olivet Baptist Church! -jason

Aloha, In this preschool article, I would like to take a moment to inform you of a constitutional amendment question that will come up on the Ballot in the November Election. The question is "Shall the appropriation of public funds be permitted for the support or benefit of private early childhood education programs that shall not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex or ancestry as provided by law?" The passing of this constitutional amendment would pave the way for Universal Preschool, a government funded and controlled public early childhood education system. At first glance, Universal Preschool seems like the answer to the educational crisis in our State, but here are some reasons this could have far-reaching impacts in this generation and the next.

· The State will be dictating the curriculum. If Olivet Baptist Preschool wanted to enroll children in the Universal Preschool program, we would be required to teach their secular curriculum. We would not be allowed to teach about the Lord when the subsidized children are enrolled in our school.

· Many Christian Preschools would likely close because "free" is always more attractive to parents than full tuition. When the A+ Afterschool Program opened, many private programs, including the one at First Chinese Church Preschool, closed within months.

We need to get on our knees and pray. If we can't teach the truths of God, the battle for the hearts of our preschoolers and their families will be lost. Universal Preschool is a Trojan Horse....magnificent at first but bringing in many hidden dangers and worldly values and philosophies. Get involved this coming election...know what is going on and pray for wisdom and understanding, then get out and vote!
