What a wonderful time of year! A big thank you to staff and family members who joined in to help

with events during this year’s holiday season!

Salvation Army.

Our team spent 11 hours at Hy-Vee spreading cheer and accepting donations for the kettle! The

money raised will help meet needs in Olmsted County. Each dollar is used locally to support 30

different programs and services of the Rochester Salvation Army. Thanks to Laura Collins for

coordinating this event each year.

This year’s Shop with a Cop was coordinated by Deputy Sheriff Michelle Ness and held on

December 9th at Walmart North. Officers and family members helped area kids shop for their

family

members, and

have some

lunch while

wonderful elves

wrapped the presents.

Deputy Sheriff Casey

McFarlen organized the

second annual Tip a

Cop event held on

December 14th at

Glynner’s Pub. This

year’s event was an even bigger success than last year’s and over

$4,800 was raised for Special Olympics Minnesota. Thanks to

Glynner’s Pub for sponsoring this event!

As 2017 comes to a close, I want to thank our staff for the work they

do to keep our people safe as well as all that they do

to give back to our community. Their commitment to

excellence and professionalism in the challenging

environment of law enforcement and detention is

second to none. I am so proud of this organization

and all that we are able to accomplish together.

I’ll close with a reminder as you plan to celebrate for

the New Year, please plan for a safe, sober ride home.

CIT Officer of the Year Award Captain Macey Tesmer Detention Sgt. Andy Danielson received the CIT Officer of the Year Award on December 4th. Sgt. Danielson was nominated by Megan Schueller a forensic social worker with Olmsted county. Megan nominated Sgt. Danielson not only for his work and assistance with CIT training, but for his work cooperation with mental health staff and the courts when dealing with those detainees that are in custody who have significant mental illness. Sgt. Danielson was presented this award at an annual NAMI banquet. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness and honors those that have done exceptional work with those who suffer from mental illness. Congratulations, Sgt. Danielson, for all the work you do!

The time is upon Deputy Sheriff Paul Gilman Captain Scott Behrns On December 28th, 2017, Deputy Paul Gilman will retire with 25 ½ years of dedicated service to the people of this county. Paul started his career as a detention deputy in the “old jail”. For those that don’t know or are simply too young, the old jail is now the Ozmun Building located on the downtown Mayo Campus. Paul was met at the door by the newest authority figure in his life, Sergeant Carl Goldsmith.

Paul worked in the ADC for around 5 years. During those years Paul worked in the Transport Division where they spent their time moving federal prisoners back and forth from the Federal Medical Center. What Paul didn’t know is that he would be working with his future partners, namely Dean Thompson and Mark Baron. According to Paul, Dean and Mark were part-time deputies that helped in the Transport Division thus leading them to their careers with us. In July of 1997, Paul moved to the LEC side of the house where he was assigned to the Patrol Division. Paul and his wife made the career decision to move into the Civil Division to ease the burden on the family when both parents were working rotating schedules and same weekends. Paul has worked in the Civil Division, Training Division, and Court Security Division. Paul believes that the best job in the department is the job you are working at a certain time in your life. When Paul looks back it’s the change in society that he remembers the most. The people we deal with are more violent and mental illness is more prevalent. Even with that foremost in his mind, Paul will tell you that law en-forcement is a good job, especially in Olmsted County. Paul is grateful to his employer as he worked for a good wage, had good equipment, and great training to keep him safe. Paul will also tell you that the technology changes that he has seen are for the better for our people and designed to make your job easier. Paul easily re-members when there were no computers in the car, no cell phones available, no audio or video recorders at your hands to help protect you. Paul also fondly remembers a current Captain that made his own recording device for his assigned squad car; the first ever in Olmsted County. Paul was certain this was a policy violation at the time, but Paul, being the forgiving soul he is, does not want this current Captain named. When talking with Paul about this, I told him that I would do my best to protect the anonymity of The Weather Captain. When Paul I and chatted about the article, I asked Paul “what would you say to a day one deputy?” Paul’s an-swers were straightforward and honest. In Paul’s words: “Be honest and follow the rules. Don’t ruin your creditability”. “It’s a good job. If this is what you wanted in life, you got it. Don’t be bitching. Be happy that you got what you wanted”. After Paul takes the final walk from the building, he and his family plan to spend some time in the sun and have some fun. They will be visiting Walt Disney World in January and off to Mexico in March. As always it was a pleasure to talk to the easy-going Paul Gilman, so we leave you with this: On behalf of the citizens of Olmsted County and your partners at the OCSO, and for those that chose not to say or could not say it, “Thank you Paul for your dedication to serve when others chose not to.” God speed and enjoy the sunshine of retirement Mr. Gilman. You have earned it.

Reserve Deputy Sheriff Borgschatz to Retire

Sergeant Chris Wallace

Reserve Deputy Sheriff Jason Borgschatz will be concluding his service with the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office on 01/01/2018. Jason started with the Sheriff’s Office in 2004 and has been an instrumental part of our boat and snowmobile patrol over the years and he will be missed. Thank you, Jason, for your service; we wish you well in your future endeavors!
