PADMA TEERTHA

If a person passes with perfume the air around becomes fragrant. A sandalwood tree makes even the bitter smelling neem tree fragrant by proximity to the neem tree.

Similarly, Lord Datta’s presence by ponds and trees have made those places holy. People go on pilgrimage to these places that are associated with Lord Datta.

If these places have become so great by association with Lord Datta, then





The Sun God, Surya who is a friend to the world and a witness to the good and bad deeds of all had a daughter called Bhu-mati. She was fair and very beautiful.

imagine the great glory of the Lord and delight in his stories.

We shall tell a story connected with one such place called Padma Teertha.

4. Decorate Your Turtle! You can use markers or paint.

5. Cut some paper circles and make fun cartoon eyes for your turtle.

6. Glue them to your turtle’s face.

3. Next tape your pieces to the bowl.

To get your turtle to stand upright you can have your legs angled down along the sides of the bowl.

However great a person may be, once he starts to fall rarely does he rise again. Unable to overcome his terrible desire, the Sun God tried to seduce his own daughter.





Story continued……..

Bhumati ran away, took the form of a deer and hid in a dense forest. The Sun God searched for her everywhere. There is no place where the sun cannot see. In the end, he came to know that she had hidden in the form of a deer and again he tried to catch her.

She told him of this was not good thoughts and feelings but the Sun God did not heed her words.

God’s ways are very strange. One day the Sun God saw his own daughter who shone with the brilliance of youth. He became infatuated with her and wanted to possess her.

Bhumati was stunned by this act. She began to tremble with fear and shame.

5. Open the box and line the bottom of the box with aluminum foil. Then cover the foil with black construction paper on the bottom .Solar heat will be absorbed by the black sheet.

7. Cut two plastic wrap pieces slightly bigger than the opening of the flap.

8. Open the box and use tape to attach one piece of the plastic wrap underneath the opening. Make sure the plastic wrap is very tight and taped on all four sides.

9. Close the box and tape the second plastic wrap piece to the top of the flap opening.

You can try melting cheese over toast with tomatoes baking a muffin

warming leftovers for lunch!

6. Close your box and put some rolled up newspaper around its inner edges.The newspaper will insulate your oven.

That's it! Your solar oven is ready to bake!

Supplies you will need: Pizza box Tape and scissors Aluminum foilBlack construction paper Clear plastic wrapNewspaper, pen, notebook paper and ruler

1. Keep the pizza box in a closed position.

2. Put a piece of paper on top of the box and trace a rectanglearound it with a pen.

3. Cut out three sides of the rectangle you drew on the pizza box.. You now have a flap on the lid of the box. Fold the flap back in the direction of the side you did not cut.

4. Put the aluminum foil on the inside of the flap and secure it with tape. It is important to have the surface of the foil exposed to sunlight.

A severe leprosy caught hold of the Sun God. Loathsome sores spread all over his body.

By that time the news of the Sun God’s misdeed reached the devatas, (gods) and the rishis. They all came there just as the Sun God was about to catch Bhumati in deer form.

It is said when merit or sin reaches it peak it yields fruits instantly. Suffering the fate of one’s actions cannot be avoided.

THE ARROW MAKER :O Yadu, one is surprised at the concentration of the arrow-maker.

While making arrows even if a procession of the King accompanied by musicians and dancers were to pass near him he would not be aware of it.

All his interest and diligence goes into making of the arrow.

Similarly O King, a yogi should develop dispassion gradually.

He should learn to sit still for any length of time.

Then he should practice control of his energy through praanayama (breathing). Then the mind will become Still.

If such a stilled mind is directed towards God, habits generated by actions will be burnt to ashes.

They all rushed forward and prevented him from committing that wicked deed.

He felt humiliated not only by his equals but even those who were inferior to him.

Look at the fish it has no weakness except for its tongue. The fish fall prey to the bait on the fishermen’s hook. The fish’s uncontrolled tongue is the cause of its death.

Head sunk and mouth shut the Sun God stood there in shame.

Everyone who had come, elders and youngsters alike heaped abuses on him.

Good qualities will arise and subdue desire and ignorance. This will lead to the destruction of agitation and laziness. When this happens he will have bliss of knowledge (samaadhi).

He will be unaware of the inner or outer world. I learnt this from the arrow-maker.



King Yadu asked Lord Datta, “How do you remain unaffected, happy and calm? Why do you

always seems to be floating in bliss? What has made this state of mind possible?”

Lord Datta replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little knowledge from a number of

gurus (teachers). I have 24 such gurus.

Listen carefully! I will tell you what I have learnt from them.”

The Osprey :This little bird, the osprey one day had a bit of meat in its mouth.

A much larger and stronger bird saw the osprey and attacked it.

The clever little bird immediately dropped the meat.

The bigger bird left the little bird and followed the bit of meat.

Thus the little osprey escaped imminent danger.

I learnt from the osprey, if we keep a thing that is coveted by others, it will subject us to severe anguish.

It is wise therefore to give such things voluntarily.

Shedding tears and begging forgiveness on her father’s behalf, she said “Oh rishis, you are all kind.

You have written books on good conduct and prayer ceremonies to help wicked people who live in this world.”

If this is the fate of the Sun God, then what about others?

People wake up early in the morning and pray to the Sun God for good health. Now the Sun God himself was in the grips of a terrible disease.

Bhumati gave up the form of a deer and assumed her original form. She was as righteous and soft hearted as she was beautiful.

As a result of his own actions my father is now suffering from this terrible disease. Please forgive his faults and kindly free him from his sins.”

“In the past when mighty persons like the Lord of Heaven, Indra committed sins did you all not join together and save him?

The devatas and rishis were astonished at her plea and pleased with her understanding. They began to feel sorry for the Sun God’s misfortune.

They said, “Bhumati, you are an understanding person. Being infatuated with one’s own daughter is the most dreadful of all sins. You father is suffering from this dreadful sin.

It can grant happiness as well as liberation. Lord Datta has conferred a boon that whoever bathes in the pond will be rid of all diseases and will regain health.”

“There is a solution. Lord Datta, who is the embodiment of compassion lives in Amalaka village. By his presence the pond Padma-teertha has become a holy and celebrated place.

“If the Sun God were to go there, bathe in the Padma-teertha and serve Mother Renuka and Lord Datta he would regain his health and become pure in thoughts. Let him do so.”

On the advise of the rishis, the Sun God went and had a bath in the Padma-teertha. He meditated on Mother Renuka.

After a few days Mother Renukaappeared before him and said, “Lord Datta’s grace has fallen on you.”

At that very moment the disease vanished and his body began to shine with even greater brilliance than before.

What Will Happen?

The heat from the sun is trapped by the plastic sheet. This makes the temperature in the bowl increase.

This in turn evaporates the water in the polluted solution of water and food additives.

The water vapour then reaches the plastic sheet (since hot air rises) where it condenses to form water.

It condenses since the temperature inside the plastic covered bowl is greater than that outside the bowl.

This runs down the underside of the food covering to the point where the pebble is sitting, and then drips into the cup.

This water should now be fine to drink! ☺

Cover the bowl with the plastic food covering. It needs to be a little bit loose.

Place the pebble on top of the food covering in the centre of the bowl so that it makes a dip in the plastic sheet, which must be EXACTLY above the top of the drinking glass.

Then place the whole setup in the sunshine.

CAN YOU PURIFY WATER USING THE SUN’S ENERGY?

Water This is one of the simplest and best water science experiments, and it also demonstrates the power of the sun and how it can be

harvested in everyday life.

Materials Required:* large clear bowl from the kitchen.* cling wrap or any clear plastic food covering* a clean drinking glass* salt* food dye* ordinary drinking water* a pebble.

Procedure:Mix water in the bowl with the salt and the food dye until you have an unpleasant looking and tasting solution.

Extra ingredients can be added to the bowl to increase the unpleasant taste of the mixture. These can be any household food items such as garlic, sugar, cinnamon, tumeric, curry powder and so on.
