OMM KIT CHECK, DECLARATION AND SAFETY RULES 2011 CAR REGISTRATION NUMBER TEAM NUMBER Each individual and team is responsible for being properly equipped for two days unsupported racing in exposed terrain at the end of October. This Kit list should be seen as a minimum requirement only, and is open to variation, experience permitting. Check the weather forecast, your previous experience and use sound judgment for the kit you should be wearing and carrying. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any competitors who, in their opinion, do not have the necessary kit to survive in an emergency situation. Cotton clothing is not suitable, so Jeans, T Shirts Sweatshirts etc... are not permitted! ALL ITEMS EXCEPT TENT AND STOVE MUST BE CARRIED BY EACH TEAM MEMBER. PERSONAL SAFETY - IN THE EVENT OF ACCIDENT OR INJURY THE NORMAL CODE OF MOUNTAIN SAFETY APPLIES. 1. Never allow the pressure of competition to override your sense of Sound Mountain Judgement. The decision to start is yours and the decision to pull out must be yours. 2. Remember this is a team event and your partner is your first point of aid in case of trouble. The buddy system is invaluable in checking for hypothermia. You must never split up. The only exception is in the case of an emergency, when competitors must exercise their own mountain judgment as to the appropriate action to take, including leaving a partner in a warm safe environment to seek help from others. 3. In the event of accident or illness, pitch the tent with the casualty inside in both sleeping bags & ensure they are warm. Use all available aids to insulate them, take careful note of the exact location of the tent, if you have an LED headtorch with flashing feature, and can safely spare it, place this on the outside of your tent to attract attention from rescuers. At this stage you should use your mobile phone if you are carrying one to call for assistance. If not & you judge this the safest option, go for help. 4. The nearest help could be a checkpoint where we have mounted a RAYNET radio beacon. These points are marked on your pre-printed map. 5. In case of retiring, you must make contact with OMM HQ directly, preferably in person, or else using the telephone number printed on your map. Do not contact the police to report your retirement. Only contact them in a genuine 999 emergency. 6. It is assumed by the organisers that anyone NOT reaching the overnight camp will be camped in safety elsewhere. There is a significant amount of ‘Safety & how to’ information on the OMM web site www.theomm.com - go to downloads. 7. Sunday - it is your responsibility to get off the hill and to let the event organisers know you are safe. If you have not checked in on Sunday by 17.00 hours you WILL be searched for, pitching a tent Sunday night is only in the case of genuine emergencies where you need to be rescued! PERTHSHIRE - SAFETY NOTES FOR COMPETITORThese notes supplement the safety advice which appears in the Programme

• The competition area contains all the normal hazards that can be encountered in British mountain and moorland terrain: rock, cliffs, marshes, rivers, steep slopes, tussocks, etc. • The information that you have provided indicates that your team has sufficient experience to deal with these hazards on the course that you are running.

STREAMS IN FLOODCourses are designed to avoid big streams, but, after heavy rain even a gentle stream can become a life threatening torrent. Cross with extreme caution. First, decide whether or not it would be foolhardy to even try. You don’t get extra points if you drown. If you decide it is possible to do so safely, move with great care. Hold onto your team mate. Even wait for another team to join you and cross with all four holding one another.

FIREWhen cooking with small stoves in small tents there is a real risk of your tent catching fire. If the weather allows, think about cooking outside, or else in the porch. Spare a minute to identify where the nearest fire bucket is located and try not to pitch your tent, too close to anyone else.

BIOLOGICAL HAZARDSBeware of polluted water. If in doubt, do not drink it without boiling it.Ground where animals graze can contain many hazards. Take care where you put your hands. Try to wash them before eating and don’t put food directly onto the ground.

EVACUATION PLANIn the event of an injury or illness to an individual competitor, depending on the severity, the partner should give first aid if necessary and then a) help the casualty to safety or b), pitch the tent, put him/her in a sleeping bag and give food. TAKE CAREFUL NOTE OF THE LOCATION. Use your mobile phone if you have one; – otherwise you should seek help from other competitors, from a radio help point, from nearby habitation or from the nearest road.

In the event of the competition being cancelled for any reason, you will be told by a marshal, at a control, a road crossing or the overnight camp. Please do as you are instructed.

In the event of weather making it impossible for you to continue, descend to low ground and shelter and make your way back to the Event Centre. You may have to camp out overnight.
