IwasalsohonoredtoseeTualatinVal-ley accept the Local Association of the Year award and to watch our own Dorothy Fahl-maninstalledasanMTNAFoundationFellow. Our dear friend and colleague, Peter Mack, was a surprise Foundation Fellow. We were all delighted for him. In addition, Oregon was given an award for increasing our membership numbers over the course of 2014. We should all be very proud of the honors we received.

Along with fabulous sessions, the annual conference offers many opportuni-ties for leaders to meet and discuss ways their state and local chapters can grow and improve. To this end, some committee chairs and I attended the open sessions on certification,MTNAfoundation,wellness,membership,collegiatechapters,theNorth-west Division meeting, the State Presidents meeting, andtheAnnualBusinessMeetingof the Association. We’ve come back armed with new information and ideas to grow and improve our organization.

The opportunity to learn, grow, recon-nect with colleagues from throughout the country, as well as make new friends, is invaluable. I hope you’ll plan to enjoy the experience for yourself and join us in San Antonio next April. See you there!

I was honored to represent Oregon at the recentMTNANationalConferenceinLasVegas. We’veallheardthesaying,“WhathappensinVegas, staysinVegas,”butthatdoesn’t apply here. I’m anxious to share what happened!

EighteenotherOregonmembersandI enjoyed beautiful weather and several evenings of fabulous music, including Sir JamesandLadyJeanneGalway,TheCana-dianBrass,andAnnShein.Inaddition,wewere privileged to attend masterclasses by ourMTNAPresident-ElectScottMcBrideSmith, as well as the incomparable Lang Lang. Such a treat!

I also heard Peter Jutras give a con-densed version of the presentation he’ll be sharing at our upcoming OMTA state conference in June. For those of you who’ll be able to join us, I think you’ll find him fascinating, engaging and inspiring.

I was so proud to watch our Oregon students compete for top honors in the Junior Piano, Senior Piano, Senior Strings and Young Artist Strings categories. What phenomenal talent! Congratulations to Or-egon’sownKiarraSaito-Beckmann,studentof Kathryn Lucktenberg, who took first place in the Senior Strings competition.

You Are Not Aloneby Krista Wallace-Boaz, NCTM

I remember clearly a particular Far Side comic,byGaryLarson, thatwaspublisheda few years ago. It included a picture of a house on a seemingly peaceful street. Through the window you could see a dog holding a violin, his practicing put on pause as he stared longingly out the window at the postman. This picture implied several things to me—the pure truth that at times thestudyofourartrequiressacrifice, andthat practicing and growing in our profes-sion is sometimes a lonely sport.

InpreparingforNationalCertifica-tion, it may at times seem like a lonely sport. Time spent analyzing pieces, think-ing about the efficiency of studio poli-cies, writing self-reflections and teaching philosophies—all so very important to our dedication to teaching and completely wor-thy of the time and effort, yet time spent by ourselves. However, in taking a closer look, itbecomesquicklyapparentthattheopposite has occurred.

Part of a Great Community

NationalCertificationimmediatelyconnects

us to a large network of professionals that are excited and energetic about the teaching of music. This network helps all of us to real-ize that this isn’t a lonely sport, and we are part of a large team. Working through the Teacher Profile Projects not only allows us to demonstrate knowledge and creativity, but it alsourgesustoaskquestionstoeachother, think about ideas and situations from differ-ent angles, and consider what our colleagues are doing to serve the profession.

While there will be some alone time withacomputer, andquietthinkingtimeto develop thoughts, know that we are connected nationally through these com-mongoals.Wecanaskquestions,listentoeach other’s thoughts, lend support through the tough times, and cheer each victory. WhetheryouareaNCTM,currentlycompleting the Teacher Profile Projects, or thinkingseriouslyaboutbecomingaNa-tionally Certified Teacher of Music, know that you are not alone, but an important part of a great community of passionate professionals, dedicated to the lifelong service of music and musicians.

State News The Cool Factor

New Orleans is the only place I know of where you ask a little kid what he wants to be, and instead of saying ‘I want to be a policeman,’

or ‘I want to be a fireman,’ he says, ‘I want to be a musician’

— Alan Jaffe

Jazzpianorequireslistening, creatingandimprovising, understanding of theory—all the skills we teach our students as they prepare for the Classical Piano Syllabus. OMTA has had a Jazz Syllabus that has been used sporadically by a few members overtheyears.Butthankstothehardworkof Toby Koenigsberg, we now have a new, updated, accessible Jazz Syllabus curriculum that is available and teachable not only by trained jazz musicians, but by classically trained OMTA teachers as well.

The new Jazz Syllabus progresses slowly and evenly through the core skills thatmakeJazzunique.Thereisagreaterfocus on listening, analyzing, and of course improvising than in the Classical Syllabus. This is a strong program on its own, or in addition to the classical program.

Jazz is an American treasure. It’s got the cool factor.

Toby has also written a series of books to accompany the Jazz Syllabus, so students and teachers alike can venture into this experience with information and guidance.

I encourage you to consider experi-menting with the Jazz Syllabus. As we work so hard to inspire and educate our wonder-ful young musicians, this is yet another tool

tohelpusdojustthat.AND,asteacherswe have the opportunity to learn. When we are inspired, the students are inspired.

To learn more about the Jazz Syllabus, please contact Toby at [email protected].

When completely ready, the Jazz Syl-labus manual will be on the OMTA website and next year you will be able to register through Leggiero for Spring Syllabus 2016.

Happy Playing!

Location Hudson Hall Willamette University

Fee $10.00 per recital for each student

Forms Student Entry Form

Type Non-adjudicated recital.

Repertoire Any style repertoire; solo or ensemble.

Description This recital is a chance for students to create artwork to complement their repertoire. Music and art-making are intertwined and often enrich one another. Creating art along with music is like escaping into another world and emerging with a souvenir. For this recital, students are encouraged to create a piece of artwork inspired by their musical selection. As they practice and live with the music, please consider having the student also create a concrete realization of their abstract musical vision. The artwork can be any medium: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, poetry, etc. During the performance the artwork will be projected on stage and will be available to view before and after the recital. Hudson Hall is a wonderful performance opportunity for students to see a college campus and perform on stage with a 9 foot Hamburg Steinway. This event is a fundraiser for the OMTA Willamette Collegiate Chapter.
