Staffordshire:

From winning business and receiving increased enquiries to forging new business partnerships and recruiting talent, the positive impact of Staffordshire’s inaugural business festival is still being felt.

A boomingbusiness landscape

The festival delivered a range of events which meant that there was something for everyone. From workshops, business breakfasts and factory tours, to careers fairs, conferences and expos, enabling businesses to engage with their desired audiences and gain help and advice from experts. Sara Williams, Chief Executive of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “We wanted to connect the business community across the whole of the county, as well as showcasing to those outside Staffordshire the opportunities that locating here presents. To hear from those involved that tangible benefits are already being seen, is simply fantastic. “The festival was created in a bid to bring together what is a fantastically diverse business base across Staffordshire and we believe that it has done just that. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors and partners for their support in making this festival such a success.” It wasn’t just businesses that were engaged in the festival, nearly 1,000 young people attended careers fairs during the fortnight, meeting employers and bridging the gap between business and education.Julie Poppleton, Head of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance at Chase Terrace Technology College, said: “Our careers fair created a fantastic opportunity to work together in partnership with the Stafford Chamber of Commerce. It has been a great success and we have developed a strong working partnership as a result. "We have jointly achieved some outstanding positive outcomes for a huge number of young people and their parents across Staffordshire. Feedback has been incredibly positive, with a rise in aspirations and motivational levels

The two-week festival saw more than 3,000 people attend 78 events at 51 venues across Staffordshire. With Keele University and Staffordshire University as headline sponsors, the aim was to showcase the county’s products, services and talent, connecting businesses and raising the area’s profile.Feedback from sponsors, partners and attendees highlighted a real hunger for the festival, but it wasn’t just about creating a buzz, the business festival produced countless direct benefits for participants, helping business in Staffordshire to boom.Stephen Wileman, Head of Technology and Development at Enlighten eLearning Consultancy, said: “The business festival was a great success that really helped raise awareness of our company and the services we offer. Our membership fee to join Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce has already paid for itself. We have been really busy since the festival and have seen a tangible, positive impact on our business.”

home to, through events, tours and a specially-commissioned video. Not only did larger companies demonstrate how proud they are of their local roots, but SMEs were able to highlight their flourishing businesses and the thriving business community that they operate in. The festival brought together familiar faces and new business to celebrate all that the county has to offer. “ We are delighted to support the bid for UK City of Culture, this is an amazing opportunity to showcase the people, skills and ethos of Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. There is a strong culture of resilience, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in our community, and to be successful in this bid would be a true testament to the people of Stoke-on-Trent.”Gareth Higgins, Managing Director of KMF Group

Becoming UK City of Culture provides a unique opportunity, to create new jobs, increase domestic and international visitors, gain access to a range of world-class cultural events, and to provide enormous benefits for the local community.Over 1m people visited Londonderry during its time as the City of Culture in 2013, and it is estimated that Hull will receive a £60million boost to its local economy as the UK City of Culture 2017.Sara Williams, Chief Executive of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “We hope that this new purpose and ambition in Stoke-on-Trent will stimulate business growth, investment and change across the city region. “Already, the very competitive bid process is highlighting what is happening to transform people’s perceptions of the city.”Political, cultural, education and business leaders have come together to form new collaborations and networks. This ‘coalition of the willing’ with more and more people believing in and backing the bid is already starting to deliver results as they work to develop a winning cultural bid. The narrative of the bid reflects Stoke-on-Trent's unique character and distinctively expresses the city's identity and aspirations to deliver maximum impact and a lasting legacy. ►

Paul Williams, seconded from Staffordshire University to support the bidThe UK City of Culture is more than just a very strong marketing or branding tool for attracting inward investment and strengthening the city's reputation nationally and internationally. The Local Government Association has identified five key ways that culture can boost local economies including attracting visitors, creating jobs and developing skills, attracting and retaining businesses, revitalising places and developing talent. If the city is to be awarded the 2021 crown, we will be expected

City of Sport lays foundations Stoke-on-Trent’s year as the UK’s European City of Sport has created a legacy for the city, attracting hundreds of thousands of pounds of funding from partner organisations and welcoming thousands of visitors. The UK City of Sport ceremonial ceramic baton, designed by local ceramist Denise O’Sullivan, features the Stoke-on-Trent crest and recognises local creative credentials creating a strong link between sport and the UK City of Culture 2021 bid.Councillor Terry Follows, Cabinet Member for Greener City, Development and Leisure, said:

The backing of businesses across North Staffordshire could prove vital to the success of the bid. Businesses can pledge their support and endorsement by attaching a ‘back the bid’ signature logo to their emails, joining in the social media conversations using #sot2021, providing a link to the www.sot2021.com website on their own sites, providing content, stories and profiles to enhance the website and co-branding corporate events. There are also opportunities to contribute by joining one of the working groups and forums that have been established to develop the bid.The city has already witnessed a huge amount of support from local businesses that welcome this celebration and are encouraging others to back the bid.

to deliver a high quality cultural programme that builds and expands on local strengths and reaches a wide variety of audiences, creating a demonstrable economic impact and a catalyst for regeneration.

"We’ve had a fantastic year as City of Sport, and there is still a lot more to come. Our intention from the start has been to involve the whole community and our events have brought people into the city, supporting our economy and local businesses."

Fiona Hawkins, Managing Director of Staffordshire marketing and PR agency Plinkfizz, said: “Becoming UK City of Culture would encourage continued investment in the digital and knowledge economies in the area. “By providing opportunities to the creative industries, we can help to build infrastructure that will ensure the next generation of creative thinkers, decision makers and business leaders can drive forward our productivity and business growth to create more and better jobs.”Bidding for UK City of Culture will not only deliver an economic boost, it will also help to raise aspirations and educational attainment, will positively impact on health and wellbeing and help us all to promote the city as forward-looking with a positive approach to innovation and growth.

Crackdown on business crime

Thanks to a new scheme, run by Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce on behalf of Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, specialist independent advisers are now available to help victims of business crime get back on their feet as quickly as possible and to minimise the cost and impact on their organisation. The Business Crime Support Initiative provides a helpline for victims to speak to trained Business Crime Advisers who sit alongside police colleagues in the force’s control room.Victims of business crime can contact the initiative’s helpline, regardless of whether they have reported the crime or not, to get support from an experienced adviser. In some circumstances, the adviser will refer the company to an appropriate registered expert who can offer expertise specific to the crime committed, for example support with insurance, building repairs and emergency key staff recruitment. Staffordshire Chambers’ Business Crime Adviser, Simonetta Mitchell, said: “Business crime is a serious issue that is far from victimless. It affects people’s jobs and livelihoods. The Business Crime Helpline encourages businesses to report incidents to police to allow officers to identify crime patterns. Crucially, it enables us to give businesses the support that they need to ensure they can resolve any issues and return to normality as quickly as possible.”

Crime against a business can be devastating, impacting on productivity, profitability, staff morale and sometimes leading to business failure and job losses.

“ Business crime is a serious issue that is far fromvictimless. It affects people’s jobs and livelihoods.”

As part of the scheme a number of companies offer free advice to help businesses get back on their feet. One company that offers free advice on how to restore IT systems and premises security is EPX Technical Services.Co-managing Director Dan Ellis said: “This is a superb, innovative and very worthwhile scheme. The team members at Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce have a wealth of skills and experience in a huge range of industries, so it makes tremendous

sense for them to act as a central point of contact for business victims of crime.”

Since January 2016 over 2,000 people have gained help from Business Crime Advisers through this initiative.

the National Living Wage. “We have continued to help businesses based in Stoke-on-Trent to achieve the Workplace Wellbeing Charter accreditation. This accreditation is a great way for businesses to gain clear recognition of the positive way in which they run their business and support their workforce.” AccreditationsThe chambers sets high standards and is proud to have been reaccredited for another three years for the international accreditations environmental management (ISO14001) and quality (ISO9001). Its internal Environmental Action Group (EMAG) continues to monitor and report on areas of quality, environment and health and safety.

As one of the first organisations in the country to achieve BCorps accreditation, Staffordshire Chambers can demonstrate and look at the positive impact it has on people and on the planet, as well as on finances. In January 2016, the chambers received the Government’s Cyber Essentials accreditation in recognition of the good controls that we have in place to mitigate the risk of internet-based threats. In 2015, it was re-accredited by the British Chambers of Commerce. All of these accreditations are vitally important as they represent dedication, high standards of customer care and delivery, and enable the chambers to bid for various contracts to support the community.

Audit and GovernanceThe Audit and Governance (A&G) Committee ensures the chambers is managed effectively and in accordance with financial and legal policies and procedures, regularly reviewing the risk register, salary and benefits, policies, procedures and best practice.

QES analysisJustin Urquhart Stewart, Co-founder at Seven Investment Management. The nights are drawing in, the clocks have gone back and, before we know, it’ll be Christmas!Looking back, 2016’s been quite a year. From changing political leaders (or not in Labour’s case) to Brexit–now very definitely on the cards. While our stockmarkets seem to have shrugged off thoughts of any potential impact, the Pound is languishing at levels not seen since our last female Prime Minister and some gloomy headlines outline what Brexit may mean for our economy. So I was delighted to see the Staffordshire Chambers’ latest QES which represent confidence, possibly the most important factor in driving economic success, and any lack thereof can be quite damaging. As business leaders, we can avert negative consequences from Brexit by continuing to invest. So 37 percent of you investing in your workforce and 22 percent increasing your plant and machinery will support future success. What we cannot do is just sit around watching events play out. And, given your encouraging numbers for expected turnover and profitability in 2017, it seems you’re all intent on steering away from any potential Brexit-related car crashes. Well done!

Has the EU referendum influenced your decision making? At our Autumn lunch, the overwhelming majority of businesses were optimistic about the medium to long-term prospects for their business and the local economy. This characteristic business optimism is backed up in our latest Quarterly Economic Survey, where there are clear signs of increased confidence for future turnover and profitability. Businesses have been creating more jobs and expect their workforce to expand during the next quarter. Riding on the drop in the value of Sterling, many members are selling more goods and services overseas.Things are looking good but we need to keep an eye on some worrying trends. The level of UK sales and orders has fallen again this quarter. Secondly, for businesses who import and are looking to export, exchange

rates and the rising cost of raw materials are creating inflationary pressures on sale prices. Thirdly, 25 - 30 per cent of businesses said that the vote had influenced their recruitment and investment intentions and the survey shows that firms are being more cautious about investment plans. The local economy is still growing, but at a slower rate than before the referendum. We are lucky though as our local firms are nimble, flexible and able to respond to changes in the economic environment. However, they need to be able to plan for those changes, so a prolonged period of uncertainty around the Brexit decision is not good, particularly over access to workforce skills.

Staffordshire Skills UpdateI repeatedly hear businesses say that accessing appropriate skills training is a nightmare. They find the qualification framework complex, availability of funding undecipherable and the number of access points to training providers too great. They often call for a single point of access to business-minded training providers who meet their needs at a reasonable cost. A couple of years ago a number of further education colleges, private training providers and Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce came together to form Skills Staffordshire. Our aims were simple; To simplify the system for businesses, meeting their needs and supporting Stoke and Staffordshire Enterprise Partnership in raising the economic vibrancy of the county. I was honoured to be the first chairman of this unique partnership

as we created the foundations upon which the dynamic partnership would be built. Now the partnership includes local universities and voluntary organisations, ensuring that we can offer end-to-end skills training to businesses at all qualification levels. To be effective, this partnership needs to be business-led, so I’m delighted to hand over the role of chairman to local businessman Jonathan Dale. Over the summer, Skills Staffordshire has secured £2.5million of European funding to support skills development for SMEs. This funding, available between now and March 2018, can be used for re-skilling and upskilling the workforce. The flexible funding criteria can include things such as customer service, ICT and administration. Following an initial business-centric organisational needs analysis funded training will then follow.

Eight JCB apprentices are celebrating their graduation without running up massive student debts.

The group chose to ‘earn while they learn’ by becoming higher apprentices at JCB rather than heading to university. Their decision is now paying dividends as all have qualified with foundation degrees in engineering without spending the usual financial outlay required for higher education.

The group became JCB Higher Apprentices in 2013, combining study with practical workplace learning. Now they are embarking on further study which will see them attain full Bachelor of Engineering degrees (BEng).

Twenty-three-year-old Adam Varley, of Wetley Rocks, who works as a Design Engineer at JCB Heavy Products in Uttoxeter, said: “Because I am earning money and JCB is sponsoring me to do the degree, it gave me the security I needed to move to Staffordshire and enrol on the programme. The whole experience so far has been fantastic.”

During their apprenticeships the group benefited from on-the-job learning as JCB engineers. They also attended college once a week for classroom-based studies. As well as achieving Foundation Degree qualifications, they also received an EAL NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

Catherine Bull, 21, of Shavington, Cheshire, said: “I really like the work-based learning as it gives you hands-on experience. You have also got three years of earning under your belt, which puts you at an advantage compared to other full-time university students.”

A step in the right direction for Malta students A University of Malta duo has linked up with Rowley Hall Hospital to learn about a range of surgeries.Third year podiatry students, Rebecca Attard and Katya Zerafa, spent a week at the hospital under the guidance of Podiatric Surgery Consultant, Mark Price.Mr Price, who co-ordinated the visit, is a visiting lecturer to undergraduates at the University of Malta’s School of Podiatry. Students visit regularly from many parts of the world to observe his work.

During the visit Rebecca and Katya observed some of the surgical foot and ankle procedures that take place at the hospital. They also learnt how a patient consultation takes place, how a decision to proceed with surgery is reached and how to pre-assess a patient as being fit for surgery.Rebecca said: “While the University of Malta offers us lots of educational opportunities, it is rare for students to encounter some of the more invasive procedures.“When Mr Price offered us a chance to visit him in England for a week of observation, we jumped at the opportunity”.Katya added: “We’d like to say a big thanks to the staff, as well as all the patients who kindly consented to

let us observe their consultations or surgical treatment.“Both of us were able to learn enormously from the experience and make use of the information for our studies as we strive to become better podiatrists when we graduate from university.”

Statutory demands are often used as a precursor to commencing bankruptcy proceedings against a debtor.A creditor may present a bankruptcy petition in respect of a debt if he can show each of the following:• The debtor appears either to be

unable to pay the debt or has no reasonable prospect of being able to pay;

• The debt is for a liquidated sum of £5,000 or more, payable either immediately or at some future date and is unsecured.

An unpaid statutory demand is evidence of the debtor’s inability to

pay their debts for the purposes of bankruptcy proceedings. However, it is not necessary to serve a statutory demand before presenting a bankruptcy petition if the debt arose under a judgment or court order and the execution has been unsuccessful. A statutory demand can be a very good method to concentrate the debtor’s mind to put forward a proposal to pay the debt, failing which, you as a creditor, could proceed with a bankruptcy petition. Used effectively, the statutory demand is a great tool to obtain payment.
