PRESIDENT’SCOMMENTS

July 2017◦ Volume VIII, Issue 7 Page 2 of 5 Ft. Campbell Chapter ◦ Military Officer's Association of America

“Baseball is a game of race, creed, and color. The race is to first base. The creed is the rules of the game. The color? Well, the home team wears white uni-forms, and the visiting team wears gray.”

– Joe Garagiola, Baseball is a Funny Game, 1960.

July is the most patriotic, cel-ebrated, and traveled month in the American calendar year. The American people take this opportunity to visit amusement parks & national parks; to see a parade or participate in one; to drive some classic cars on the ‘Mother Road’ Route 66 or ride in a convertible car on the open road; or to go to a baseball game and buy some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, eat a hot dog, apple pie, or have a Moon Pie and an RC.

On a layover in Philadelphia, I learned what allows us the freedoms we exercise and the adventures we explore. In the

museum at Independence Hall in Philadelphia hang the por-traits of the founders of Amer-ica, the writers of the Declara-tion of Independence, as well of the signers. I observed that each man appears to have the eyes of a daredevil. The eyes ofthese intellectual and cultured men seem to say, “We know that by signing this documentwe will be hanged as traitors if our nation fails. But we be-lieve in freedom; we pledge our fortunes and our sacred honor for something that is great.” You cannot look at these portraits without being af-fected. They inspire you to say, “I too must dedicate myself tosomething big in my time.” If our founders created freedom intheir time, it is our opportunity tosave it in ours. This is being big;this is being great. Dare to take big steps to keep America the haven our Founders created it to be.

Forty-eight members and guests met on Saturday, 17 June, at the Sportsman's Lodge on Fort Campbell. Upon completion of the buffet meal, CDR Adames read a poem entitled “Old Glory”, which pro-vided a moving tribute to our flag. He then introduced the guest speaker.

Chris Self, a veteran amputee/athlete, told his inspirational story of recovery and of his meeting President George W. Bush. Starting with a bike trip, his relationship with the former President be-came closer, and he was invited to the Presidential ranch in Texas. This resulted in Chris' having his portrait done by the former President. Subsequently, this portrait was included in the President'sbook Portraits of Courage. Chris also revealed details of the President Bush’s new projects: the Warrior 100 bicycle race and Warrior Open golf tournament, each benefiting disabled veterans.

CDR Adames presented a Certifi-cate of Appreciation, which includedsome limited-edition stamps, to ChrisSelf in appreciation for the outstandingpresentation. His wife, Dana, received aMOAA cup.
