    Committee (COC) and

    Deloitte have partnered

    to change that. Together,

    they have launched

    Game Plan, a high-

    performance athlete

    wellness and transition

    program designed to

    give Canadian athletes

    new tools to pursue

    excellence during, and

    beyond, their sporting

    careers.

    Conversations began

    over three years ago,

    when CEO of the

    Canadian Olympic

    Committee (COC) Chris

    Overholt shared with

    partners at Deloitte

    his belief that the

    Canadian sport system

    and corporate Canada

    needed to do more

    to ensure that every

    athlete who had devoted

    themselves to the country

    through sport were given

    the chance to succeed

    when they transition out.

    When the training is finally done and the last game ends, many athletes are faced with the question of what comes next. Olympic-level competition requires total devotion, and sometimes theres neither time nor energy to plan for life aer sport.

    by stories he had heard

    about the struggles

    athletes faced when

    their high performance

    careers ended

    including mental health

    issues, financial struggles

    and a lack of purpose in

    their day-to-day lives.

    To address this need,

    the COC partnered with

    Deloitte, the Canadian

    Paralympic Committee

    (CPC) and the Canadian

    Olympic and Paralympic

    Sport Institute Network

    (COPSIN), with the

    idea of developing a

    total wellness program.

    This program, Game

    Plan, would not only

    support athletes as they

    transition out of sport,

    but throughout their high

    performance careers.

    Deloitte was a natural

    partnerits been

    a long-time Ocial

    Supporter of the COC

    and had recently

    established a renewed

    16-year partnership

    (through 2032). Through

    extensive interviews with

    athletes and members

    of the high performance

    sport ecosystem

    including 24 members of

    Sport Organizations, 38

    current and former high

    performance athletes

    and nine coaches and

    mental consultants

    Deloitte helped identify

    five elements as priority

    areas for total athlete

    wellness: education, skill

    development, health,

    networking and career

    management.

    Those areas have

    then been broken down

    into practical skills and

    toolssuch as public

    speaking, personal

    brand management and

    financial planningas

    well as aids, in the form

    of a private job board or

    training opportunities

    that recognize an

    athletes need for a

    flexible schedule.

    Participants will have

    access to mental health

    support 24/7, as well as

    mental health awareness

    training. Theres also an

    opportunity to network,

    and plenty of mentoring

    opportunities between

    transitioning athletes and

    next generation hopefuls.

    All the resources

    are consolidated

    in a new website at

    mygameplan.ca, with

    added opportunities

    being oered in the form

    of conferences, digital

    applications, one-on-one

    counselling and group

    sessions.

    Game Plan is a game-

    changing program for

    our high performance

    athletes, says Overholt.

    Designed by leading

    experts from the ground

    up with athletes and for

    athletes, it delivers a

    program they have been

    in need of for years. It

    gives athletes the power

    to take control, build their

    own path to the podium

    on the field of play and

    plan their exit strategy o

    it. We are giving athletes

    the right tools they need

    to succeed at sport and

    in life.

    This is an incredible

    and ground-breaking

    initiative by the COC

    and its partners that will

    dramatically change the

    landscape of sport in

    Canada for the better,
