So, in what ways does
your media product use,
develop or challenge
forms and conventions
if real media products?

Establishing ShotThe establishing shot of our film is very typical to most films. The majority of films begins with
an establishing shot, allowing for the audience to know where the film is set. It also introduces
the audience to the main environment that the film focuses around. A more common establishing
shot is looking over a landscape, and panning. We challenged this convention by having an
stationary extreme long shot with a slow zoom in, it is also a low angle shot looking up at the
house, making it seem intimidating. This is altered by the sound that is playing over the top (a
radio presenter talking about the morning in a cheery way) making it not seem intimidating, but
inviting. The audience are invited into the house and the story continues. In the film Iron Man the
film opens with an extreme long shot of a desert landscape, with some trucks driving on a roadand it slowly pans to the left, following these trucks. Then suddenly cuts to the
next shot with the music coming in as the instant
transition happens. The shot in Iron Man follows
the conventions of an average film, whereas our
establishing shot slightly subverts the
conventions.

Scene 1In a drama film, the main character is very quickly
established, the same happens with our film, in the secondshot the character is introduced and it hints that she is the lead, firstly because she is the first character that is introduced andalso the conversation involves her, hinting that theconversation will be followed with actions by her. This
technique of introducing the character very early is evident ina lot of dramas, such as in the PursuitofHappyness.Christopher is seen first, quickly followed by his father, they
both play the role of lead in this movie.

CarSceneFor this scene we use a stationary over the shoulder shot showing
Lydias point of view when she is driving, allowing for the
audience to feel as though they are in the car with Lydia. This is
often used in films, to allow the audience to connect with the film and the characters and feel involved
with the actions that are taking place on screen. We slightly subverted the conventions for a car scene ina film. The conventions feature the point of view/over the shoulder shots, making the audience feel
involved which we included. Although it does feature various other shots from out side the car,
showing the surroundings that the car is driving through showing the car drive across the shot . This
shows how fast the car is going and it also shows the directions that the car travels in. For action films
it helps to present the intensity of the chase or whatever the reason is that they are driving. For drama
films it often shows the calm and peacefulness of the drive. InDriving Miss Daisy there are a lot of
scenes in the car. They show point of view and over the shoulder shots, just like in our film, but theyalso show shots from outside of the car, even though not loads (due to the fact that the conversation
occurs in the car, so it would be pointless to show too many shots from outside of the car). The shots
from outside of the car show how their journey is progressing, which is what ours shows, because the
audience doesnt know where Lydia is going, they are justenjoying the ride, and taking in the environment. Our film
uses natural lighting to create a realistic feel to the film,
whereas the scenery seen through the windows of the carare not real, they use artificial lighting. One film that does
use similar conventions to the ones that we use -natural
lighting and in car camera angles- is Children ofMen. In
which a scene is shot from a 360 degree camera positioned
in the centre of the ceiling of the car, allowing for all the
people in the car to be seen. This shows how we stuck to
some conventions but subverted others for drama films.

Use of natural lighting as seen in a
lot of films, giving them a
naturalistic feel
There is no
music at this
point, instead
the sound of
talking,giving the
film a
naturalistic
feel. In Reign
OverMe
there are a lot
of scenes in
the street, in
all of these
scenes there
is diegetic
sound of the
street, e.g.Cars and
people.
Showing how
we followed
the
conventionsin this case.
Mise en-
scene in thisscene is of a
school,
giving the
story a
naturalistic
feel. Inliterally all
films, Mise-
en-scene is
used to
make the
scene (and
film) seemmore
realistic.
The camera shot that has been used here (a medium long shot) allows for the
actors to show their emotions because a lot of their bodies are visible,
allowing for a natural conversation to take place. This is seen a lot in most
films when characters are conversing.

This is Lydia, shes our lead character. For a feature length movie there is time where you can
establish characters and allow for the audience to connect with them fully. Our aim was to do this
in 5 minutes. So what we had to do was not focus on connecting the audience with our character,
but connecting the audience with the experience that our character is going through. We did thisby making the character the same age as our target audience, and featuring things in the story
which people in our target audience will have experienced like passing a driving test. characters
story is established throughout a film, in the Reign OverMe Don Cheadles character slowly
allows the audience to understand him, making his character become more clear throughout.
Whereas in our film, our character is established at the beginning, but we dont learn anything
more about her in the film, challenging the generic conventions featured in Reign OverMe.

The Magazine Review ArticleFor this I researched into a lot of different film review magazines, buying various different issues of
different magazines, and comparing the different types of articles available in the different magazines. For
my article I aimed to create a genuine looking article that would be featured in the likes ofEmpire and Total
Film. There was an special edition issue ofEmpire in which the best directors of our generation wereinterviewed and featured throughout the magazine. This inspired me and made me know that I wanted to do
an article about and interview with the director, but I also wanted to feature a review of the film, and I
thought that they would go nicely together. Lydia and I decided that we wanted to put behind the scenes
images on our articles. We took them with natural lighting while we were in-action creating the sense of
us being in the moment. We also aimed to fill the frame making a busy composition so the feeling of action
was exaggerated. I liked a lot of these pictures, so I wanted to use a few, but the research told me that film
magazine articles have few pictures in them. I chose a large one that showed us fully in action with theactors, and positioned it so that where the crease was would allow for 2 people to be either side. Research
also told me that the main picture needs to fill most of the double page spread, possibly due to the cinema
being larger than everything else. I also chose a smaller picture of us directing, and I decided to put in a still
from the film, so that the audience could relate to the film when reading the article because there is a
familiar scene featured in it. I aimed to use a heavy dialogue narrative from the director, so that all that was
featured in the article was precise and exactly what the director wants to say. The similar idea was used in
the special of empire, it was just the directors speech and nothing else. I used simple colours, because afterresearch I found a lot of the colours were whites, blacks, greys, reds and blues. I challenged these
conventions slightly by making my main colour a brown, although it is of a simple dull colour, it was not
similar to something seen in one of the magazines. I wanted to use a nice rounded font that was very easy to
read while being simple, but not something every day such as Times New Roman, so I used a mixture of
Calibri (featured here) and Californian FB. The article links well to the film because the pictures relate
directly to what is featured in the film, as well as the simplicity that surrounds the film is mirrored in the
article. The same themes of success are featured in the article, similar to the success in which Lydia finds
herself in, in the film.

And what would I change?
Well, if I had the chance to do another article, I would possiblespan it out to 3 or four pages, due to the fact, some of themain featured articles in the magazine were of 3 or morepages and I think that this is a lot more effective, than just a
double page spread.I would also experiment with other types of photos, not just
stills and behind the scenes shots, such as production shotsand photo shoots.
Another thing that I may change is that I would challenge a lotmore of the conventions of a movie magazine.Experimenting with this would be interesting, such ascompletely changing the colour schemes and layouts just toexperience the different conventions available.

The Film PosterI researched into various different film posters, and there were a lot of various different types; such as a
simple pictures with no image, and just an object or a location; a single image of an actor; a lot of single
images with shots from the film on; and a bleeding image of a still from the film. We decided that we would
go with an object, a generic house, and decided to draw it in a childish way. Because this doesnt hint aboutwhat the film is about, and only tells the audiences that there is a perfect house which does hint about the
perfect life. this leads the audience into a false sense of security, but in an obvious way. If they look at the
poster, they can almost guess that something is bound to go wrong, because the house is too perfect. The
tagline links to the perfect image, saying if everything is this perfect, then what can go wrong? When
everything goes right What can go wrong? We decided to use bright and bold colours, because they are
very eye catching, and stand out from the white background. The white background hints to the dream like
state. We used the same font as featured in the film for the title and the colour. We decided not to use anyimages, not to give away the story, and only use the childish image, suggesting the perfect life. It directly
links to the film because it suggests the themes that are evident in the film, like the dream like state, and the
perfect yet un real life. The poster is also simple, and in a way, our film is simple too. It is a short film, which
cant be too complex, so we decided to have a simple story with an average character, which is similar to our
poster, which is simple and not complex.
I would experiment with the other kinds of film
posters, and take some production shots, with the main
actress and other actors, to see if the final result could
have a better effect.

14/23
Here are my final ancillary tasksFor my article, I like the way that it looks very genuine. I tried
to follow the conventions as closely as I could so that it would
look professional, and I believe that I achieved this. I also like
the pictures that we took, they look natural which is exactly
the feel that we wanted, and we achieved this. I like the
signatures at the start of the article, It s a bit different from
any article that I have seen. I also like the way that the
pictures indent into the main image, but still have a boarder, I
think this looks professional. I wanted for my article to look
as professional as I could so it would look genuine.
I really like the simplicity of this and it gives ofthe right intention. And I especially like the
tagline, it fits perfectly. The childish, simple,
bright and bold colours really stand our against
the plain white background which makes the
poster as a whole stand out against other
posters, that may be busy or even similar, in
terms of having a simple object on them.

What have you
learned from your
audience feedback?!

16/23
Our Audience FeedbackTo our delight, we received minimal negative audience feedback. The only major thing that was
worth changing was the volume of Matthew lofts voice when he is talking to Lydia. We
attempted to change this my isolating his voice and bringing up the volume of it, but thissurprisingly didnt make a difference. The feedback of our poster was positive. There were some
comments about the original draft of the poster, and how it looked too simple. So we edited it
by moving some of the text around and changing the size, and smoothing over the picture, after
this it looked a lot better, and our peers (the audience) gave it positive comments. The
comments about my article were very positive, any feedback that I had from our music
magazine article task I took on board for this ancillary task, meaning I knew what I was doingright and wrong before I initially started working on it. The feedback that we received about the
ending, the fact that people interpreted it as just a dream, didnt
bother us. This is because we think that the ending can be interpreted
in its own way by each person. So this isnt negative feedback, just
informative feedback, that is good to know. The questionnaire that we
used to receive feedback about our film really
helped us to find out weather our film workedwith our audience or not. It did, but if it didnt, it
would give us the information that we needed to
improve it.

So, how did you use media
technologies in the
construction and research,planning and evaluation
stages?
-
8/9/2019 One Day an Evaluation Presentation by Ieuan James
18/23
Different Media Technologies Microsoft PublisherI used this to create my article, it was very useful. I had used it previously when
creating the article for our music magazine. It is simple and straightforward to use, and
a lot easier to use to make a magazine article than on word.

Different Media Technologies Microsoft WordWe used Microsoft word to edit the poster, write drafts for blog entries and creating
questionnaires. it's great for creating simple word documents, and probably the best
word processor. A lot better than note.

Different Media Technologies Sony VegasThis took some getting used to, but once I was used to it, it was easy. It is a lot better
than windows movie maker, because you can use loads of different layers of sounds and
videos, there is also a lot of effects at your disposal.

21/23
Different Media Technologies Corel Paint Shop ProI used this software to edit pictures for our article and the poster, there are a lot of different
effects available, which enhance the picture. Without it, I would have been fine, but with it, it
looks a lot better.

Different Media Technologies www.vimeo.comWe used Vimeo to upload our video onto the internet. We tried to use You Tube because it is
more widely used, but due to our music being copy righted it would not upload. Vimeo is equally
as good, but does not get as many hits. It was useful because it allowed us to upload our film.
