to your employer, your professional development,

and our planet.

It is not enough just to learn about sustainability.

There must also be action. By the end of the One

Planet Leaders programme you will have

developed two action plans: a personal plan for

those areas that you directly control, and a

strategic plan for your company or business unit

as a whole.

To help you develop your action plans and the

thinking behind them, the programme provides:

n three face-to-face workshops

n on-line learning modules that fit around your

existing work commitments

n personalised learning that is tailored to your

company’s situation

n networking with other One Planet Leaders from

a range of business sectors.

An outstanding team is ready to facilitate your

learning. We have brought together a range of

experts from WWF, business, universities and

NGOs. You can expect rapid progress as you

stretch yourself within a creative and supportive

environment.

During the three-month programme you will work

through three phases: Explore; Challenge; Apply.

You will have the opportunity to use the

programme to complete the 'One Planet Leaders

pathway’ with University of Exeter in the UK

(subject to approval). This pathway is dedicated

to the study of leadership and sustainability

within an organisational setting focusing

specifically on the needs and challenges facing

contemporary business.

This pathway is an option within the MSc

Sustainable Development and will be undertaken

through distance learning. Completion of the One

Planet Leaders pathway will achieve 60 credits,

THE PORNOGRAPHY OF CONSUMERISM

This session debates how consumerism links to sustainability and explores the tensions between

lifestyle, consumerism, happiness, wellbeing and environmental quality.

Prof.Dr Michael Braungart –‘CRADLE TO CRADLE THINKING’

Participants will hear about ‘cradle to cradle’ thinking from one of the leading global exponents in the

field of bio-mimicry.

‘Personal Pathway Identification’ READINGS REVIEW

Participants will review the online materials available and chart their personal pathways for the Explore

phase. Participants can choose which of the 48 readings to explore. Topic areas range from how the

natural world functions to the impact of human and business activity.

You will continue to explore in greater depth the

themes that were introduced during the workshop.

48 readings on topics ranging from Ecological

systems to Stakeholder engagement with full

references for further investigation are provided.

You will choose your own path through these

resources and are encouraged to share them with

colleagues to promote discussion on areas

relevant to your business. We encourage you to

use the on-line forum to debate with other One

Planet Leaders. Throughout the programme you

will need to allocate at least four hours a week to

on-line learning (this work-load can be shared with

colleagues if you create a ‘support team’ back in

the workplace). You will be required to report back

on your exploration at the Interim Workshop.

Sample Sessions

On-line learning module

During this intensive two-day workshop you’ll

explore some of the most important issues facing

business and the planet in the 21st century.

You can expect a mix of expert input, group work

and individual exercises. You will start to form a

team-working environment where all the One

Planet Leaders know and support each other.

By the end of the workshop you’ll have a deeper

understanding of the scale of the challenge, and

will have a real enthusiasm for leading change

in sustainability.

Sample Sessions

Jan-Peter Onstwedder. Head of Risk, Integrated Supply & Trading, BP Oil International Ltd

This session reinforces the opportunities of identifying and managing non-financial environmental and

social risks and illustrates the benefits from integrating them into business priorities and processes.

Case Studies review – ‘SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS IS POSSIBLE!’

An increasing number of organisations are taking on the challenge of being sustainable. Organisations such

as Proctor & Gamble and Nokia are invited to inspire by sharing examples of enabling and achieving change

in business practice.

WHAT IS THE SCALE OF THE CHALLENGE? Richard Holland WWF Fresh Water

Richard Holland brings to life the direct and indirect uses of water across product lifecycles and

illustrates the short and medium term implications of environmental and social trends for business.

He poses the question of a Water footprint alongside a Carbon footprint.

Having reviewed the learning points from your

exploration, we will further challenge your thinking

with the support of global experts who have a

wealth of practical experience. You will review and

evaluate examples of excellence in corporate

responsibility and sustainability. Together we’ll

identify transformational thinking about the

purpose and nature of business activities. By the

end of the workshop you will have new confidence

in leading thinking on environmental and social

issues that pose threats to ‘business as usual’.

You will also be introduced to the all important

‘apply phase’. You will be familiarised with a series

of management tools which will help you create

your strategic and operational plans.

On-line learning module

Through on-line learning you will continue to challenge

your own and others’ thinking on sustainability as you

work through the 'apply' management tools.

Interim Workshop

Challenge

“We believe that the leading global companies of 2020 will

be those that provide goods and services and reach new

customers in ways that address the world’s major

challenges – including poverty, climate change, resource

depletion, globalization, and demographic shifts”Niall Fitzgerald, Chairman of Reuters, former Chairman of Unilever

COMMUNICATION AND BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE

This interactive session on how communication and influencing strategies can support behaviour

change in organisations will help you identify and overcome the blockages to implementing a

sustainability strategy within your organisation.

Dr John Blewitt, Director of Professional Development and Innovation, Exeter University

THE ROLE OF MARKETING AND EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION.

This session explores how sustainability can be related to your organisation’s marketing activities.

John Blewitt identifies opportunities to use a comprehensive response to the challenges of

sustainability to create brand value.

Alex Macgillivray, AccountAbility. ASSURANCE AND VERIFICATION.

Participants will hear about the role of non-financial reporting in communicating corporate commitment

to sustainability. Alex MacGillivray explores the role of assurance and verification in non-financial

reporting.

The final workshop brings together experts in

non-financial reporting, leadership and

management. Together we review plans and

stimulate ambitious thinking on how to respond to

the challenges of responsibility and sustainability.

It’s essential to take your learning from the

programme back into the workplace. Further

interactive sessions will explore the role of change

management and communications in making your

plan a reality. Opportunities for further support in

taking action plans forward will also be identified.

Final Workshop

A series of tools provide a step-by-step process for

identifying and managing key environmental and social

issues for your particular business. You will complete

all eight steps before the final workshop, with on-line

support and guidance from our panel of experts.

The output will be two types of action plan: a

personal plan and a strategic plan. The personal

plan focuses on areas within your particular area of

authority where you can implement and control

change. The strategic plan focuses on actions that

are of strategic importance to your business as a

whole, business unit or particular process (you

choose the scale).

Our tools draw upon best practice in sustainability

management systems, stakeholder engagement,

materiality measurement and strategic alignment.

The process can provide the basis for on-going

strategic management, non-financial reporting and

communication with key stakeholders such as

investors and NGOs.
