KEITH SAYS:

LET’S MAKE A COMMUNITY DOCUMENTARY AND A

SOUNDTRACK.TOGETHER, WE CAN TELL AN IMPORTANT STORY

OF SOCIAL INCLUSION

ONE VOICE.ANOTHER BUDDY WALK OF SORTS.

Keith is no different from any child. He tells me off in no uncertain terms when I have

been unfair, when I am full of myself, when I dominate, when I am not able to see things

afresh. He forgives me every time when I behave like a lesser human being, and goes on to dance, cuddle, cheer me up and raise

me up to be a better human being.

You just need to host GSK corporate executives or STUDENTS or INDIVIDUALS who have volunteered to become community-documentarians for ONE VOICE.

Commit to host for half a day and sing “One Voice” (written by Barry Manilow) with the community-documentariansPlan a walk itinerary to go out and COLLECT VOICES - as many voices for social inclusion as you can, or a particular voice of someone who can influence better social inclusion, or an unsung hero in the social inclusion journey.

You tell us what you will be doing on this day and we help you frame this into an advocacy topic, if you so choose. This is not critical; what is critical is that you have opened up a part of your life to another person and the public at large. It’s scary, but it is also a brave journey into advocating for social inclusion.

You tell us the time, location and constraints.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Think of it as spending a day out with a new friend who wants to know more about Down Syndrome.

ONE VOICE. WHAT DOES A HOST FAMILY DO?

Only recording of whatever you allow is allowed. Community-documentarians are only allowed to document using the issued recording equipment.

Community-Documentarians will also be asking questions – answer them as you feel comfortable.

Community-Documentarians will also be asked to write reflections and/or interviewed – which we may select as narration or voiceover for ONE VOICE.

You will also be asked to reflect on this unique walk. You may submit this and/or be interviewed and we may use it as the voiceover for ONE VOICE

And everything out of the ordinary. Think of it as sharing your world with the whole world. As you like it.

This could be a visit to this friend’s home if he or she is homebound. Or it could be a special school or a school which practices mainstreaming. Or you could be travelling with your new friend to work and experience some of the workplace integration programmes that are being developed. Perhaps your host family may plan a visit to a hospital or one of the therapy visits. The walk could also be a dance performance or at a recording studio, or collecting voices at public places, and schools.

You are going on a walk, with a new friend. There will be many walk itineraries.

ONE VOICE. WHAT DOES A COMMUNITY-DOCUMENTARIAN DO?

You don’t choose, just like your host families. Walk itineraries were chosen .

Somewhere you’re not likely to have encountered on your own. Somewhere only the brave are privileged to encounter, as after you return, we know your lives would be changed forever. Individuals with Down syndrome have a truly magical quality about them. It is not possible to explain to you in words. You can only know this magic through a personal experience.

It will be more like a voyage.

ONE VOICE. WHAT DOES A COMMUNITY-DOCUMENTARIAN DO?

Getting angry on its own does not help us raise the quality of lives of individuals with Down syndrome. There are many practical things we can do – health insurance coverage, funding for quality early intervention, a chance at being truly and successfully included in school, work, and in the community, and basic care and respect. How can we remove the barriers to a meaningful quality of life for your new friend? What next steps can you take?

You might get angry after you return home. You might ask why does it still have to be so challenging in a world of abundance?

Once you process your emotions, you will search more. In the most poignant of moments, you will find the reconciliations. You will find peace.

You might cry after you return home. It is okay to cry.

Our children surprise us every day with their gifts and abilities. They overcome their challenges, albeit slower and with much support. And they achieve heights higher and greater than most parents can ever imagine. Every new step they take, we soar. We hope we are able to share this love and joy with you and perhaps you may want to hold it in your heart. In your personal moments of challenges, just remember, each small step matters. And just like our babies - we will triumph in the end.

We want you to celebrate with us.

ONE VOICE. WHAT DOES A COMMUNITY-DOCUMENTARIAN DO?

You will give voice. You will tell the story of your buddy walk by singing.

ONE VOICE. ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION (SINGAPORE)

Vision"To be the Centre of Excellence for individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community."

MissionDevelop individuals with Down syndrome through life long learning and social integration. Support families through specialist services, information and education. Advocate for equal opportunities, quality of life and their contribution to society. History Early in 1995, a group of parents of children with Down syndrome recognized that a great need existed in Singapore to support and educate families, professionals and the public about Down syndrome. Out of a meeting held on 1 October 1995, the Down syndrome Support Group was formed. In May 1996, the group organized and hosted, with great success, the 2nd Asia Pacific Conference on Down syndrome. The enthusiasm generated amongst parents, professionals and community members spurred the formal registration of the group as Down Syndrome Association (Singapore) on 16 September 1996. The Association was registered as a Charity under the Charities Act on 17 January 1997 (no. 1229) and awarded official recognition by the National Council of Social Services on 4 July 1997.

DSA is a self-funding, non-profit voluntary welfare organization with IPC (Institute of Public Character) status, which works closely and regularly with healthcare and educational professionals, and voluntary welfare organizations. The Association is affiliated to international bodies such as Down Syndrome International (DSI), the Asia-Pacific Down Syndrome Federation (APDSF), Asian Federation of Mental Retardation (AFMR) and the International Association of the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (IASSID). In April 2004, DSA was invited to organize and host the 8th World Down Syndrome Congress in Singapore, which attracted participants from more than 34 countries.

Goals and aspirationsWe acknowledge and respect the right of all persons with Down syndrome to receive an adequate response to their needs. We are thus committed in our aims to provide support, enable a person with Down syndrome to attain his or her full potential, help a person with Down syndrome to lead a “normal” life and thus be able to contribute to society and educate the public on Down syndrome.
