Master Builders of Iowa is pleased to offer a full complement of online training sessions designed to provide flexibility and convenience, while maintaining a high level of educational programming. We understand that the training needs of our members are vitally important and must be easily accessible statewide.

With convenience, accessibility and safety in mind, we have developed MBI LIVE to provide the membership and the entire commercial construction industry with another delivery option for education, training and professional development. The sessions outlined in this resource guide offer a great opportunity to train multiple members of your team while at the same time assuring continuity amongst all employees regardless if they are working from the office, the job site or remotely. MBI LIVE will also offer the opportunity for participants to earn Master Builder Designation credits in the same manner as our traditional, in-person training programs.

MBI LIVE will be delivered through the Zoom platform with high-caliber speakers who will keep all class participants engaged via interactive sessions, open-ended questions, and chat rooms. It is important to MBI that attendees not only receive quality training on a wide array of class offerings, but attendees must also have the opportunity to have that same engaging experience as they would attending an in-person course.

As you peruse this guide, you will see that we have secured quality speakers who are industry experts on many different topics. Once again through MBI LIVE, we are committed to delivering content that is timely and relevant, but is accessible in a convenient, flexible and safe manner.

Should you need additional information or have questions on any of the classes within MBI LIVE, please feel free to contact Tom Fulcher (MBI’s Director of Education) at [email protected].

On November 12, 2019, Master Builders of Iowa introduced the Entrepreneurial Operating System or EOS® to hundreds of industry leaders and leadership teams at the EOS® Experience. Attendees of this event gained a foundational understanding of EOS® from the Founder of EOS® Worldwide, Gino Wickman.

At least partially as a result of attending the EOS® Experience, many MBI member leadership teams and companies have begun the process of implementing EOS® as a tool for greater productivity and a higher level of accountability. Self-implementing EOS® is challenging and time consuming, and requires a great deal of commitment and dedication…but thousands of companies around the world have found that the time and effort are well worth it in the end.

In this series of online sessions, EOS® Implementer Mark Stanley will walk attendees through the EOS® implementation process step-by-step and will address the most critical components of self-implementation. Throughout each session, attendees will gain valuable information and insight toward better communication, organization, and accountability via the EOS® system.

These informative and interactive courses are a great opportunity for company leadership teams to learn and collaborate together to assure everyone on the same page toward successful implementation of the EOS® system.

The 5 Foundational ToolsOctober 12, 2020 | 1:00 – 3:00 pm

This session will help EOS® self-implementers hone their understanding of the 5 EOS® Foundational Tools™. Learn how each tool answers important questions for your business. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of these critical tools and how to use them to get exceptional results.

Learning Objectives:

1. The Vision/Traction Organizer™ (V/TO) is a powerful tool to help you simplify the strategic planning process, getting your vision out of your head and onto paper. Using our simple 2-page tool, you’ll answer eight questions to crystallize where your organization is going and how you will get there.

2. The Accountability Chart – A supercharged organizational chart that, in addition to showing structure, clarifies the roles and responsibilities of everyone in the organization.

3. Rocks – These are simply priorities…the three to seven most important things you must accomplish in the next 90 days. Company Rocks are priorities for the company, departmental Rocks are priorities for your department, and individual Rocks are priorities for you or another individual.

4. The Weekly Meeting Pulse helps companies do this by providing an opportunity to ensure that everything is on track for the week, which in turn ensures that everything stays on track for the quarter.

5. EOS® Scorecard™ – your business’ version of that predictive data. It tells you exactly what is happening in your organization at the moment and gives you the power to be proactive. Building an EOS® Scorecard is no easy task, and no one gets it right on their first try.

LMA — Leadership, Management & AccountabilityFebruary 8, 2021 | 1:00 – 3:00 pm

Poor leadership and management are an epidemic in the entrepreneurial world. LMA is a simple two-part questionnaire that gets to the heart of what makes for great leaders and managers. LMA stands for “leadership,” “management,” and “accountability,” a vital skill set for all leaders.

This session will address the simple but powerful formula for outstanding results with your team. Leadership + Management = Accountability.

You can’t create Accountability, it must be taken. Accountability is an outcome, a bi-product of great Leadership and Management.

Attendees will learn about 5 time-tested tools to increase accountability and performance from your team.

When you lead and manage, do you...1. Give clear direction?2. Provide all tools needed?3. Take Clarity Breaks™?4. Do One-on-Ones?5. Reward and recognize?

Three-Step Process Documenter™April 19, 2021 | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

This session will help EOS® self-implementers explore a proven problem solver from the EOS® Toolbox™. This interactive session will help clarify differences between a procedure and a process and why it is important to make the distinction. The Three-Step Process Documenter will help your organization reach the ultimate goal of core processes that are Followed by All (FBA).

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify - List the handful of core processes that make your business go - Give each process a name, and make sure everyone in the company knows and uses the name.

2. Document - Take each of those core processes and document them in high-level outline form…for each of these major steps, create a brief, bulleted list of sub steps to standardize the process in a simple, easy-to-follow manner.

3. Package - Create a table of contents from the list in Step 1. Each process from Step 2 will be the contents. Now collate them into one single binder or electronic folder. This becomes your company’s “secret sauce”, or franchise prototype of your way of doing business.

Negotiating Like a Pro:The Key Things All Successful Negotiators Do and Don’t Do

November 18, 2020 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

Negotiation is a critical business skill. You must be influential to succeed, and negotiation is the interactive process in which people try to influence each other. We all negotiate many times during the course of the day, whether we know it or not. Even the simplest decisions people make together in their personal lives can involve negotiating skill. In this session, we will discuss the strategy, process, tools, and techniques that successful negotiators understand and use that make them more powerful with others. This session goes beyond the formal, structured negotiating process and reveals the missed opportunities for informal negotiating and uncovers the less-than-obvious negotiating tools others use when deliberating with us.

Learning Objectives• Learn a step-by-step process for planning and executing an effective discussion (negotiation)• Discover the fundamental DOs and DON’Ts of negotiating effectively and being more influential

• Explore how to recognize and counter negotiation tactics used by others

Emotional Intelligence:A Deep Dive in the Parts That Really Matter Today

December 1, 2020 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is widely misunderstood. EQ was never about being nice to people, it is about understanding the impact of emotions (visible and hidden) on decision making, leadership and building effective relationships. This session will briefly introduce EQ but then deeply focus on two important areas; optimism and stress tolerance. In times of uncertainty these two unique elements of EQ are proving to be the difference between success and failure. This is all made even more challenging as we lead and manage remotely. Things that come easily face to face are harder in the virtual world. This makes understanding EQ even more important. This session will help you assess where you are in these areas and give you usable tools to:

• Differentiate between EQ and pity

• Develop strategies to increase optimism and stress tolerance• Increase team effectiveness

The Construction Operation LifeCycle

December 16, 2020 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

First, go and SEE. That is the most basic first step in any effort to improve the performance of any type of construction operation. This session will introduce attendees to the world of construction operation process and work zone metrics and how to “go and see” them within their own operations. Attendees will be introduced to a structured way of observing and documenting how work moves through space and time in varying degrees of detail. “Reactive Analysis”, that is, how to observe and document ongoing construction operations using a whole new set of criteria and measurements, always exposes opportunities for improvement and generates new learning that can be applied to similar operations in the future. The creation of a “process metrics” retained learning library will be described followed by how to employ that learning and the new familiarity with process metrics into future operation production planning activities referred to as “Proactive Analysis”. The session will conclude by describing the results of a detailed study in which 120 various construction operations experienced improved production, that resulted in improved production rates compared to previous experiences by a factor of 4.29:1.

Learning Objectives• Become familiar with the power of the Plan/Do/Check/Act performance improvement model and the need to

observe and measure the effectiveness of the work processes at the crew level.• Understand how to plan for and intentionally observe and document ongoing construction operations.• Become familiar with Operation Genetics and how this concept can help in both Reactive and Proactive

Analysis of construction operations. • Understand how to use process and work zone metrics in the detailed planning of upcoming operations. • Understand how to plan for and carry out a “potential” production plan for an upcoming operation• Become introduced to a packet of Operation Production Planning forms and worksheets.

IT Trends in Construction:Evaluating Your Systems Within the Context of the Solution Marketplace

January 13, 2021 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

For many years, the construction industry had a fairly clear path for automation. New ERP systems every ten years or so, estimating solutions for bidding, a PM application for RFIs and Submittals. Ten years ago, things got more complicated as the marketplace offered many more types of systems and solutions to automate various functions (e.g. Human Resources, BIM, and tool tracking). Today, there is even more congestion in the marketplace, overlapping functions, and varying levels of success as well as consolidation of the smaller developers by the larger ones. How can a contractor make sense of this and make good decisions for his/her own organization? This session seeks to provide some clarity around the position we are in and where the technology is heading. We will also look at how contractors can better plan for evolving IT landscape, select and implement better, and finally, get greater return from the investment in IT.

Learning Objectives• Gain perspective on the larger landscape of technology in construction• Explore ways of thinking about your own organization and how to evaluate and prioritize new solutions

• Learn proper ways of evaluating software solution and implementing for success.

Christian Burger, Burger Consulting Group | Chicago, ILChristian is principal of the Burger Consulting Group, an independent consulting firm based in the Chicago area. The firm concentrates exclusively on IT strategy and tactics for the construction industry. Christian has worked with contractors for more than twenty years on software selections, implementation management, IT strategy and planning and evaluation of current systems. He started his career in construction at FMI as a senior systems consultant. After eight years, Christian went to work as a Client Manager for JD Edwards & Company. In July of 1996, Christian launched the Burger Consulting Group. Christian is a frequent speaker at industry events and contributes articles on technology in the construction industry to many industry publications. This session will first introduce the current condition of traditional short-term production scheduling and its relationship to an overall project schedule. Then, through the introduction to the concepts of a value stream, pull, and collaboration, a very different approach to bridging between a traditional project CPM schedule and a two-week lookahead schedule will be presented. This material will describe a proven method of facilitating Crew Parade Production Planning and the required preparation, collaborative participation and desired outcomes of these sessions. Additionally, some time will be spent discussing how to concurrently enhance the possibility of growing a project culture of respect, trust, collaboration and teamwork. This session will conclude by sharing results of amazingly successful Crew Parade Production Planning events and the opportunities that still exist in terms of unrealized potential as new planning techniques and technologies evolve.

Learning Objectives• Understand the vision of Daily Crew Production Flow and the need for specific daily crew production goals.• Become familiar with the need to create a collaborative planning function that better connects the overall

project schedule and a short-term (two to three week) Look-Ahead Production Schedule.

• Understand how to plan for and facilitate a Crew Parade Production Planning event. • Understand how to solicit information from crew stakeholders as to their volume of work, preferred route or

sequence of doing the work and the durations and resources associated with that work. • Understand how to use the output of a Crew Parade Production Planning session to collaboratively populate

and manage the various crew work assignments within the Look-Ahead Schedule.

• Be introduced to a packet of Crew Parade Production Planning forms and worksheets.

April 28, 2021 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

It’s easy to keep an even keel in smooth waters. However, great leaders know that how they present themselves during difficult times can be a major contributor to their success or failure as leaders. In fact, many great leaders in history have defined themselves by the way they “stepped up” when their followers needed them most. This session will discuss the leadership element of self-management. You’ll learn the habits, attitudes, and thought processes that enable peak performers to process difficult situations effectively, set powerful examples, and secure the commitment and allegiance of others in the process. You’ll learn powerful tools you will use and remember for a long time.

Learning Objectives• Discover a simple technique to process things that cause stress and discomfort• Learn the habits and routines great leaders do to stay even and prepared for challenges

• Explore how to use your attitude - the way you see the world - as a competitive advantage

Process Change:Improving Systems and Processes within the Construction Organization

May 11, 2021 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

Before a company buys new software to solve a perceived need in the organization, it is usually a good idea to take a close look at the processes being automated. This session focuses on how to diagnose a given process, identify needs for automation, how to implement new solutions and bring about positive and impactful change. In the construction industry, there is a considerable amount of un-used or under-utilized software. This happens for a variety of reasons, not all of them under the contractor’s power to change. But some of it is and this will be our focus. This session will share a number of specific tactics that can be used to diagnose processes as well as improve them with a combination of software and process change. We will discuss how IT needs to support these initiatives but, most often, cannot lead them by themselves. We will look at some specific case studies from different types of contractors as well as have an open discussion around the challenges with process change in many construction organizations.

Learning Objectives• A clear idea of how and why processes break• Ways to measure a process objectively

• Practical ways to fix different processes• Identify tech solutions that can help IT be part of the solution• Clarify what you need from your organization to be successful

Commercial construction is one of the largest and most critical industries in the country and while we share many challenges of other industries, we also have a few that are unique or statistically more prevalent in construction. In serving our mission “to be the essential resource for improving member performance and promoting a business environment favorable to the construction industry,” Master Builders of Iowa is excited to introduce The Changing Face of Construction!

MBI’s goal with this program is to provide companies and individuals with high quality, timely, and relevant information as well as a resource in addressing four vitally important topics of their business.

• Mental Health• Gender, Race, and Recruiting

• Diversity and Inclusion • Work-Life Balance

These four topics when not properly addressed through education, training, and internal evaluation can have an adverse effect on the company as well as individual employees. MBI encourages companies to identify at least a couple of employees who will be a “champion” for each of these topics. A “champion” can be an HR Director, Project Manager, Superintendent, even a field worker…this is less about title or position and more about their passion toward the topic and their drive to see the company improve in the respective area.

Throughout each of these online sessions, attendees will be provided with statistics, information, and best practices while being challenged to take a deep look inside your organization and ask yourself “can we be better”. Can you do more for your employee’s mental health, can you instill diversity into your hiring and promoting practices, and can you do more in helping your employees juggle home life and work life and be amazing in both spaces?

For additional information on any of these topics or others that you would like MBI to explore, contact Tom Fulcher at [email protected] or (515) 657-4395.

The Changing Face of Construction

Lifesaving Strategies for Promoting Mental Health in the Construction IndustryNovember 24, 2020 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

Construction has the second highest rate of suicide among all occupations, four times higher than the general population. Construction is male dominated with a “tough guy” culture. It is a high stress industry with demanding schedules, seasonal work, layoffs, long hours, and frequent travel.

Mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions in the United States. These include depression and anxiety disorders, substance use, psychotic disorders, and work-related stress, and can lead to increased absenteeism, high turnover, lost productivity, increased costs, and lower employee engagement.

There is often a reluctance to discuss mental health issues in the workplace and this stigma can prevent people from seeking treatment. In this session, we will address workplace policies that can be used to improve employees’ mental health and provide a plan for action. Solutions at the organizational (e.g. policies), workplace (e.g. campaigns), and supervisor (e.g. toolbox talks to start the conversation) levels will be presented in this interactive session where attendees will have direct contact with mental health experts.

Learning Objectives• Gain the tools necessary to make the business case for addressing mental health• Understand unique risk factors in the construction industry that contribute to mental health problems• Describe methods to address mental health at the organizational, workplace, and supervisor levels

Diane Rohlman, University of Iowa | Iowa City, IADr. Rohlman is a professor in the Department of Occupational & Environmental Health in the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health where she holds the Endowed Chair in Rural Safety and Health. She is director of the University of Iowa’s Healthier Workforce Center, as well as the director of the Agricultural Safety and Health Training Program in the University of Iowa’s Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety. Her research focuses on the health effects of occupational and environmental exposures, with emphasis on the increased workplace risks faced by younger employees. She also has studied how lifestyle factors, such as risk-taking, substance use, distracted behaviors, and fatigue or sleep deprivation, can impact safety on the job, as well as the effect of interventions directed toward supervisors and workplace policies.

Jaime Strickland, Washington School of Medicine | St. Louis, MOJaime Strickland is a research specialist in the Healthier Workforce Center at Washington University in St. Louis. She and her colleagues work closely with employers and unions to study the impact of workplace factors on health and productivity, and to develop interventions to support worker health. Their research has been primarily in construction and healthcare and covers topics such as substance use, stress and mental health, ergonomics, musculoskeletal health, and safety management. Jaime holds a Master of Arts in Psychology and has worked as a health researcher at Washington University since 2003.

The Changing Face of Construction

Work and Life - A Balancing ActMay 6, 2021 | 10:00 – 11:30 am

As the stress of trying to “get it all done” increases, we experience a plummet in productivity, loss of concentration, and spikes in irritability or low motivation. All these responses harm our personal and professional relationships. If we lead, we have an obligation to give those we serve our best, and that means maintaining optimal mental and physical energy. Work-life balance may sound like a pipe dream, but there are considerable payoffs in striving to maintain it to the best extent possible. This session will focus on practical ways to maximize efficiency at work, “do more with less,” set effective goals, and balance the needs of strategic analysis and planning with the limited number of hours in the day. In today’s pandemic, working-from-home era, we’ll also explore specific issues around working from home, such as broad dilemmas of how to step away from work, to the details of lighting, seating, and location.

Learning Objectives• Assess your workflow obligations and then rank them by priority and follow prioritization.

• Understand and implement techniques to head off interruptions before they occur.• Manage both your incoming and outgoing email in ways that are more efficient and productive.• Implement small changes to your working-from-home environment to increase work/home separation.
