There’s nothing

inherently wrong with most technology –it’s what we do with it!

We need to think about how

we are using technology!

Because our children will be getting many of their attitudes

from us.

• About one in eight car accidents happen because the driver was fiddling with a smartphone.

• In the UK drivers aged 17 to 19 only make up 1.5% of licence holders but are the driver in 9% of fatal and serious crashes.

• A new survey by Pew Research Centre found that:

82% of people believe it’s wrong

to use a mobile phone in social situations.

The survey then asked how many people hadused a mobile in their last social situation.

•89% of respondents

said they had used their phone during their most recent social gathering, most often to read texts and emails.

We all know what we should be

• 45% of young people are checking their mobile phones after they have gone to bed, a poll suggests.

• A survey of 2,750 11- to 18-year-olds found one in 10 admitted checking their phones at least 10 times a night.

Every parent who allows their child to have their own devices makes it significantly harder for the next to keep saying no.

You might genuinely feel your child needs a phone, but does it have to be a Smartphone?

Britain tends to give children phones early compared to most other countries and goes

straight in with a Smartphone.

Make it clear that you will decide when they will get their first phone and

which model it will be.

Screen time

A 2015 survey of 1,000 British mothers of children aged 2 to 12 found that 85% of mums admit to using technology to keep the kids occupied while they get on with other activities.

The AO.com survey pointed to children spending on average around 17 hours a week in front of a screen – almost double the 8.8 weekly hours spent playing outside.

• By the age of seven the average child will have spent a full year of 24-hour days watching recreational screen media.

• Over the course of childhood, children spend more time watching TV than they spend in school.

• Ofcom in the UK estimates that the average 5-7 year old spends 4 hours every day in front of a screen.

• Children who use the internet mostly alone:

• 1 in 7 aged 5-7

• 1 in 4 aged 8-11

• 1 in 2 aged 12-15

• 70% of kids think their parents spend too much time on devices, and accuse them of double standards.

•Currently: no official guidelines in UK of how much screen time is healthy.

Frequent screen breaksMany experts believe it's more important to limit the stretches of time children spend in front of screens rather than worry about the total amount each day.Frequent breaks stop the brains from becoming over stimulated and combat screen addiction. Kids need to switch off without stress.

Experts suggest a limit of 40 minutes then an hour's break for under 10s.

Give kids a five-minute warning before their allotted time is up, and take away future screen time if they don't switch off.

You can give bonuses for good screen behaviour but be aware that this goes against the overall message of moderation so use it sparingly.

To sum up:

• Manage expectations early.

• It’s fine to say no to devices and if you do decide a certain device is needed then it doesn’t have to be high end.

• Limit screen time - and that means all screens, not just switching devices.

• Evidence shows limiting the stretches of time spent might be even more important than limiting overall time spent.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the Location function.

It can be very useful.

Google Live Traffic works because Google are tracking the location of mobiles and therefore know the speed

they’re all moving.

Navigating using Google Maps allows you to be constantly

rerouted to avoid congestion.This can’t happen unless

Google knows your location.

The problem is when we leave Location services permanently on.

Over and above privacy issues (KS2) , leaving

location on allows others to track you.

Many people carefully avoid posting their address on websites, without

realising that its effectively already embedded in the photos

they’re posting.

There are countless cases where predators have studied posts and tweets to basically work out where young people live and who amongst them seem to be

webcams without them even realising it.

If your webcam is covered up then it can’t be revealing

anything.

The same is true for mobiles but hasn’t happened on the same scale-

AUTOPLAY is where a similar video automatically follows on from a video you have chosen.

This can be useful. The BBC might assume that if you’re interested in your favourite striker’s most recent goal then you’re probably interested in his previous goals too.

If you watch a YouTube video for more than 3 seconds then it counts it as fully watched and charges advertisers accordingly.

It therefore has a big motive to start you watching anything at all regardless of how suitable or relevant it really is.

So long as you take longer than three seconds to click out of it they’ve made money from your viewing of their automatically loaded video.

A while ago a female American journalist was shot dead live on air. The killing was uploaded to Youtube by a variety of people.

Over and above the horrific shooting, the tragedy hit the news because countless unsuspecting adults and children were forced to witness the killing when Youtube automatically showed the video to them without warning.

Most of them had previously been watching completely unrelated material.

• that it is never too late to tell a trusted adult about concerns

• That anything posted online may be impossible to remove

• That they should post no photos or words that they wouldn’t be happy to show to a trusted adult

• That they should never meet up with anyone they meet online
