DIARY DATES May
Naplan Yr 3 and 5
Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th
Congratulations Kyle Bullen of 5W who is now part of
the Under 12 N.Q. Hockey Trials
Dear Parents and Carers, I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy the long weekend.
NAPLAN Tests
Next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be participating in these tests on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday. Whilst NAPLAN raises more than a few discussions across the na-
tion, we encourage our students to participate and do their best. With the introduction of external
exams for senior students in the future it is important that our students develop the stamina and
resilience in this practice. Our students will be completing their NAPLAN tests in the usual paper
based hard copy format as the Queensland Teachers Union voted to put a stop to the online for-
mat that our school was due to participate in this year.
Chappy has organised donations to purchase a nice healthy breakfast for students so they can
talk and relax with their friends before the tests next week. Parents and carers will soon receive a
letter with further information. Thank you to Chappy and all those businesses who have donated
funds so that we could provide a good start for the students on these days.
Good luck to all our students during the NAPLAN tests.
Mother’s Day
You should have seen the excitement on the faces of the students when showing me the specially
selected gifts that they had purchased for their mum from the Mother’s Day stall.
To all our mothers, I hope you enjoy a lovely day on Sunday. Know that you are very special in
your child’s life.
Oonoonba School Promotion
At the end of May The Townsville Bulletin is promoting a section in the newspaper call “WHY
MY SCHOOL IS EXCELLENT” and are publishing one student’s work with the editorial from the
school. Mackenzie Hartman’s story will be published in The Townsville Bulletin and we have
included two of the stories which were of high standard in the newsletter today.
Congratulations Mackenzie, Emily and Alannah for your great pieces of writing. Regards

WHY MY SCHOOL IS EXCELLENT
My school is excellent because they have clubs and groups that not many other schools have like the
Signing Choir, AUSLAN and Culture Club. We also celebrate Harmony Day.
Oonoonba State School also has Student Council, Peer Support and playground activities held by year 6
students to give the younger students more things to do during lunch. Year 1 and 2 students have iPads
to use in their classrooms to do their work on.
Our school has an Inclusion Policy for students with disabilities so they can do everything that other
students can.
We are so lucky to have Opti-Minds which is where you are given a problem and you have to solve it with creative thinking and dra-
ma.
Every year we have a school commemoration service for ANZAC Day to remember the soldiers that fought for us but didn’t make it
back.
Our goal setting happens in our Positive Partnership Meetings where the students are involved and get to have their say.
I, Emily Haines, as a student of Oonoonba State School, am proud to be a student and getting the best education I could ever wish
for.

WHY MY SCHOOL IS EXCELLENT
Oonoonba State School is a school that prides itself on ensuring that all students have the
opportunity to be successful in their learning. My school welcomes children of all abilities and all races
creating a community that shows the importance of acceptance and unity.
My school has amazing teachers that give up their time to create opportunities for students to
discover their talents.
This year alone I have had many different experiences like the Chinese Speaking competition, band,
Fanfare, drama and ukulele club, signing choir and Opti-Minds. Have you ever heard of a school
offering so much to one child?
It is because of the awesome teachers and the great opportunities they give us inside and outside the classroom to help us be the
best we can be that makes Oonoonba State School the best school in Townsville!

Fundraising benefits: Have you ever wondered where all the fundraising money is spent. So far in 2018 the P&C have
helped to purchase new music stands for our bands and choir (donation of $600) as well as replacing the oven (with a
fancy new catering oven at a cost of nearly $6000) and a beautiful new display fridge ($2000) in the Tuckshop. The oven
and fridge decided to pack it in within weeks of each other (and neither was able to be repaired) and luckily we were able
to replace them. Without your fundraising efforts these purchases would not be possible. Thank you and we look forward
to your continued support.
Tuckshop News - Change of hours: We are changing our tuckshop hours as of Term 2 this year.
The counter will be open as usual from 8.30-9am each morning to collect orders and for first break over the counter sales.
The tuckshop will now be closed for 2nd
break over the counter sales and lunch orders for 2nd
break will be from a limited
menu.
Volunteers Needed: Have you got a couple of hours to spare? It could be a couple of hours a week, a fortnight or a
month. Our biggest need is on Thursdays and Fridays from around 9-11.30am, but we would love some help the rest of
the week too. No experience necessary and all training given in a fun, relaxed environment. Pop in to meet Jayde or
send an email or PM to the places listed.
Next Meeting Date: Thursday 24th May at 6.30pm in the Teacher’s Staff Room. We would love to see any new faces
(and our returning members) to come and see what we do – you will never be coerced into jobs or taking on tasks!! And
there is usually chocolate!Like our Facebook page to keep up to date with what’s happening in our school. https://
