Länder und Städte in aller Welt stehen derzeit vor Herausforderungen und Chan-cen, die sich meiner Ansicht nach mithilfe akkurater Ortsdaten angehen und opti-mieren lassen. Der demografi sche Wandel mitsamt der Notwendigkeit, Dienstleis-tungen für eine immer älter werdende Bevölkerung zu planen, Migration, Sicher-heit, urbane Resilienz und Umweltverän-derungen haben allesamt eine räumliche Dimension und werden an Bedeutung nur noch zunehmen. Kombiniert man das mit dem sprunghaften Anstieg verfügbarer Geoinformationen von intelligenten La-ternenpfählen, Rohrleitungen, Wasser-uhren und Thermostaten sowie mit In-formationen über Energieverbrauch und Einwohnerströme, erhält man eine echte Big-Data-Cloud, die räumlich geordnet werden muss.

Ich glaube, dass sich Geokoordinaten wie ein roter Faden durch all diese Datensätze ziehen. Ortsdaten werden in den kom-menden Jahren eine unerlässliche Rolle in den Bereichen Smart Cities, Internet der Dinge und autonome Fahrzeuge spielen: von der Lokalisierung und Positionierung von Beacons und Sensoren über die In-terpretation der enormen Datenmengen, die von diesen Geräten erzeugt werden, bis hin zur Nutzung höchster Ortungsge-nauigkeit zur Abbildung sich bewegender Fahrzeuge.

We are a customer-orientated service pro-vider fi rst. Our aim is always to keep our customers, whether that’s our Government Shareholder, or our network of Partners or the many outdoor enthusiasts who use our products, satisfi ed and at the heart of ever-ything we do.

Our challenge has been to make sure that Ordnance Survey’s (OS) products and ser-vices meet the needs of all our current and future users. Our research shows that OS has an excellent reputation for data cap-ture and maintenance operations, and we continue to invest in this area, both in technology and people, to ensure that our products and services are underpinned by accurate and trusted data.

This is an exciting time for the geospatial industry and I feel strongly that there will always be a requirement for authoritative data that is consistently available across logical geographical areas, even though ever increasingly it will be exposed to the customer in many different ways. I belie-ve that national mapping authorities can work alongside private organisations and open source providers to meet the chan-ging needs of the customer.

WHAT DO THEY NEED?

Historically OS has been a classic surveying agency. Over the last two centuries OS has always tried to identify new markets which could potentially benefi t from mapping and location data. For example in the 1920’s OS started to produce and market paper maps for lovers of the outdoors.

More recent examples include a new 3D visualisation tool for the construction in-dustry. A good example of working with government customers is the Public Sector Mapping Agreement where all areas of go-vernment can access OS data for free. The benefi ts we provide through the agreement

have been independently verifi ed as saving the government tens of millions of pounds. Outside of government we work with a range of customers both direct and indi-rectly. Utility, logistic and telecommuni-cation companies tend to work with us direct and rely on our data, support and expertise to help them solve their prob-lems and ultimately deliver their services to the end customer.

In addition to the direct customers we also work with a network of over 300 partners. This vitally important network use OS data to support their own businesses, products and services.

I strongly believe that the current strength of the geospatial industry is as a result of the unrivalled levels of accuracy across many of the geospatial products and ser-vices available to government, businesses and individuals.

Every organisation must evolve and de-velop or risk disruption and irrelevance. We are part of an exciting and thriving industry with location being recognised as a vital ingredient for businesses and governments across the world. OS has always embraced and been at the fore-front of new technologies and processes, and has frequently adapted it business model and strategy to suit. Over the last two centuries OS has transformed from a national military mapping agency to a Go-vernment Company expected to support itself through its commercial activity while also supporting the wider geospatial eco-system.

The OS strategy is simple: it is about con-tinuing to build capacity and capability in Great Britain and then supporting other nations in realising the benefi ts of an ac-curate location framework. We want to create stronger, long-term international partnerships that focus on data manage-ment and improving how our partners and customers connect and gain the benefi ts from their own content.

The OS strategy recognises the challenges felt at home and abroad – all of which have a geospatial dimension that is only going to intensify. One particular focus area will concentrate on addressing challenges being faced by cities, such as transport, population growth, big data, planning and health. It is in the areas of Smart Cities and the Internet of Things where OS can demonstrate real value and build Great Bri-tain as a global exemplar.

PLAY IN THIS CONTEXT?

Countries, cities and towns across the world are experiencing challenges and op-portunities that I believe can be tackled or enhanced with the use of accurate location data. Demography and the need to plan services for ageing populations, migrati-

on, security, resilience and environmental changes have all got a geospatial dimen-sion and they’re only going to intensify. Couple that with a boom in geospatial information from intelligent lamp posts, ducts, water meters and thermostats, and information about energy consumption and population fl ows, and you’ve got a real big data cloud that needs putting into geospatial order.

I believe that geospatial co-ordinates have the golden thread to run through all these data sets. Over the coming years location data will play a critical role in the areas of Smart Cities, Internet of Things and auto-nomous vehicles. From locating and posi-tioning beacons and sensors, through to helping interpret the vast amount of data generated by these devices or using preci-sion accuracy to map moving vehicles.

Nun zu RICS: RICS, das Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, als der weltweit größ-te und bedeutendste Berufsverband für Im-mobilienfachleute erkennt die hohe Quali-tät des Technischen Referendariats als so geeignet an, dass die Technischen Asses-soren des Vermessungs- und Geoinforma-tionswesens ohne die, ansonsten weltweit geforderte, Zusatzprüfung direkt RICS-Mit-glied werden können. Für Geodäten mit Staatsexamen verbessert sich dadurch der Zugang auch zu privaten Unternehmen in der Wirtschaft, hier maßgeblich zu Banken und in der Immobilienwirtschaft.

EN Dr. Riecken, your professional experience and role as Vice-Presi-dent of the DVW, with the interna-tional activities this involves, mean you are familiar with the changing job market in geodesy and geoin-formation from a range of different perspectives. Where do we stand right now, and what trends seem to be emerging?

We are faced with increasing digitisation in all areas of our lives. And this includes geo-referencing everything so as to reveal “What’s happening where?!”

We can bring our core geodetic skills in geodata management to play here. Inter-nationally, it has been mainly geographers who deal with geodata management, but in Germany it is geodesy that has traditi-onally owned the necessary professional expertise to cover this entire spectrum. Nowadays, I view geodesy as an interdiscip-linary subject that holds the toolkit to tackle these imminent challenges. I am thinking specifi cally of the huge topics that have emerged in society during recent years – cli-mate change, the energy revolution, upgra-ding the traffi c infrastructure, and most recently dealing with migration fl ows. All of these issues cry out for expertise in geodesy, particularly in geodetic planning.

Who do you think surveyors and geo-maticists will be employed by in the future?

They’ll be needed wherever georeferencing is required. Particularly in property protec-

tion and geodetic planning – basically, for anything to do with rural and urban de-velopment, but also for emerging spheres such as Building Information Management. A completely new fi eld of work seems to be materialising in this case. I am quite sure that geodesists will increasingly spread outside public administration into all sorts of areas where geoinformation and geoda-ta management are required as interface activities.

Employers are going to have to step up their efforts in the future in the ‘war for talent’ if they’re going to se-cure good employees and keep them on board. What will public administ-ration have to do in order to remain an attractive employer or become even more so?

In a study of “shortage professions”, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy ranked our fi eld 7th in the table of fi elds where professionals are in short supply, i.e. where there are not enough job seekers to fi ll all the vacancies. We are already fi nding that advertised vacancies aren’t attracting enough appli-cants, and that even those who apply are often from outside the fi eld. But it has to be said that public authorities are very at-tractive employers. Besides job security, we offer a pleasant working atmosphere and many social benefi ts, such as the ability to reconcile work and family commitments, not to mention extremely attractive fi elds of work and scope for professional advan-cement. Of course, this also means that we’re looking for fl exible workers. Why should young people opt for a career in geodesy and geoinformati-on nowadays?

I already mentioned the outstanding prospects. We are looking for young, well-trained people. Personally, I think geo-fi elds are extremely attractive if you consider that, in one way or another, we’re all working towards solutions for huge social issues. I have noticed this at the “Geodesy Day” info-events we launched this year in Germany, where we get a good chance to talk to young people and whet

their appetite for geodesy and geoinforma-tion. We have to continue this effort.

Could you please outline the mo-dular training system and say so-mething about the link with RICS?

We need to look at the threefold relati-onship between the universities, technical internships and careers. In the academic sphere, the universities have instated a broad range of courses as part of the Bo-logna reform process. Technical internships have also been thoroughly overhauled. In the fi eld of geodesy and geoinformation, this has produced a modular, integrated, complementary and cumulative overall training system to prepare geodesists for managerial positions in industry and ad-ministration. The aim is to increasingly open up industry for these career starters, alongside their prospects in administration and as public-service surveying engineers.

Turning to RICS, this stands for the Roy-al Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the world’s largest and most important pro-fessional association for real estate pro-fessionals. This organisation recognises the high quality of technical internships to the extent that their technical assessors in surveying and geoinformation are granted direct membership of RICS without having to sit its otherwise mandatory entrance examination. This improves state-qualifi ed geodesists’ access to private companies in industry, and especially to banks and the real estate industry.
