Come and you will see!!

St. John Lutheran will be hosting its first Open House Sunday on Sunday, September 9th. Open House Sunday is an amazing opportunity to see everything that is going on at St. John, and it is meant for new members, long-time members and visitors alike. We’re hoping that you will not only join us for Open House, but that you might consider inviting someone you know to come and see what’s going on at St. John.

Open House Sunday is also a reminder that God is up to some amazing things here at St. John. I am often surprised at just how much ministry we are doing as a Church. From dedicated CROSS+WALK Sunday School small group leaders, to people who volunteer to serve meals at Churches United, to quilters who continue to make dozens of quilts, St. John has so many great people who contribute to our ministry. God is clearly continuing to work in meaningful ways through so many of us here!

The question I hope we can each think about for the next year is: "What is God calling me to do?" As we live out our theme of the Welcoming Community here at St. John, I wonder how we all might be called to be a part of welcoming others into the good news we share in Christ. God is clearly at work in the world, even though sometimes it’s hard to see. Yet, I am certain that God is calling each and every one of us to be good news for our neighbor. The question is, how? Only you can answer that question for yourself, and I encourage you to keep yourself open to what God has in store for you. I am confident that God’s good news will continue to surprise. Come and you will see!

Peace,

Pastor Erick

Open House Sunday

Sunday, September 9, 2018

Come and join us for an Open House Sunday on Sunday, September 9. We will be starting

our Sunday morning youth programming, hosting a meal, and showcasing the various

ministries of St. John. This is a great opportunity for people to discover a new ministry or

small group, and a great way to see all of the wonderful things that St. John is doing. Open

House Sunday is part of St. John’s yearly theme, The Welcoming Community. By hosting an

Open House, we are hoping to create an inviting atmosphere where all can feel welcome.

Open House Sunday is a great Sunday to invite friends, neighbors, or family members to get

to know St. John.

We look forward to seeing you on September 9!!

September 9.

A Note from Jeremy…

Welcome back to the School year! Wooohoo! Seeing friends again! Classes! Homework…. Yeah, I know.

The excitement wears off pretty quick. So, we’ve got some great things to look forward to this year! Coming

quickly are the Castaway Retreats. I’m super excited about these! It’ll be a great way to kick off the year with

a weekend to remember. I’ve never done one before, but I hear that it’s filled with music, games, powerful

speakers, a beautiful location, delicious food, and a whole lot of fun. Middle School Monthly fellowship will be

starting up again this month. We tear up the church (not literally of course), playing games, eating snacks,

and hanging out. Before this each month, we also have Chat and Chew, for those middle schoolers who

want to talk in depth over pizza about real life issues. The weekly Middle School Youth Group is starting

again on Sunday mornings, and this year we also have High School Youth Group on Wednesday evenings

from 7:30pm-8:30pm. Looking ahead a few months, at the end of November our high schoolers are

partnering with a few other local churches to head down to the cities and volunteer with Operation Christmas

Child, processing shoeboxes that go all over the world with gifts for kids to share God’s love. There are many

other things coming up, and I’m excited to share in them with the youth of St. John!

Peace,

Jeremy

Synod Youth Retreats You’re invited to Camp Castaway!

Middle School (Grades 6-8) - Sept. 21-23 - $27*

Sr. High (Grades 9-12) - Sept. 28-30 - $43*

As part of the Eastern North Dakota Synod, St John is attending the annual fall retreat at Camp Castaway! For those of you who went to the National Youth Gathering in Texas, you know that our gatherings are WORTH going to. Think of this as a mini-gathering. It’s just for the weekend, just with our synod, and it will be an experience you’ll keep with you.

This Year’s Theme: Nothing.

This fall we will explore the text from Romans chapter 8 that reads, "I'm absolutely convinced that nothing - nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable - absolutely nothing can get between us and God's love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us." We will be joined by speaker Kristan Graham Seaford.

*We haven’t been for a while, and we want to encourage you to go! Everyone who signs up this year will get the first $100 dollars covered, keeping the cost under $50!

FALL SMALL GROUP MINISTRIES

This fall at St. John we are hoping to add a few exciting new small group ministries. During the summer,

our Church council approved rallying behind the theme “The Welcoming Community.” We are hoping that

by creating new small group ministries, we might learn better how to be welcomed, and how to welcome

others. We will be organizing small groups of 6-12 people who gather for a set number of times to get to

know each other better and foster community.

Hospitality Small Groups

One of these small group ministries will be focused on food and fellowship. We are hoping to put together

a few groups of people that meet 3-4 times this fall for a meal and fellowship. These meals can be hosted

at the homes of the small group participants, or it can be a potluck style with home rotations or even

potlucks done at the Church.

Study Small Groups

St. John will be offering 3-4 small groups that focus on a curriculum called “Five Practices of Fruitful

Congregations.” This curriculum will help us to reflect upon how we as a congregation extend hospitality in

our weekly and daily practice of living out our faith in community.

Other Small Groups

Pastor Erick will be gathering a small group of folks who enjoy movies a few times this fall to watch a

movie and then join in conversation. We’re also exploring creating a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace

University class, as well as a relationship care small group. Finally, we have been visiting with Dr. Tim

Hiller, PhD, who will join us this fall to lead some very engaging Biblical and Theological small group

studies.

We hope that one of these small group possibilities interests you. Look for sign-up sheets starting on

Open House Sunday. We look forward to seeing you very soon!

In Christ,

Pastor Brian 5

Lutheran World Relief

School Kit Supplies The excitement of the new school year is upon us!

Would you like to help an international child through

Lutheran World Relief School Kits? Ziploc bags with the

school supply list are available in the window lobby by

the office. Bags, partially or fully filled, can be returned

anytime before Sunday, September 9. They will be

repacked in backpacks as part of the fall kit and quilt

drive and shipped to LWR in Minneapolis. Thanks for

helping children be prepared for their education!

Technology Upgrades:

Installation is Complete! With a commitment to ensuring the safety of our staff

members, our preschoolers and their families, and

anyone visiting St. John, the council recently approved

a proposal from Network Center Communications

including:

• Controlled access upgrades/options for our main

entrance

• Upgrades to our internet/wi-fi network

• New phone system to replace our aging equipment

• Integration with our existing security cameras

The upgrades will give St. John many new options to

manage building access throughout the week. The

church will remain fully open on Sunday mornings and

during other high-activity times. During business

hours on weekdays, the interior front doors will

remain locked. At these times, please press the

doorbell and we’ll let you in!

Missions/Social Concerns Committee Notes:

On Sunday, September 16, Robin Brown, Associate Director ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal,

Congregational Support from the Church wide ELCA Synod Office in Chicago, plans to attend worship

services at St. John. The purpose of her visit is to acknowledge and thank the members of St. John for their

generosity for being among the 40 congregations which make the largest, most significant annual donations

to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

On Sunday September 9, the Missions/Social Concerns Committee will join other St. John committees to

help explain and display our mission and purpose to anyone in our congregation that may want to learn

more about the work of our committee and determine how they can be involved in what we do to address

the many needs in our local, regional, national, and international mission fields. Look for our table at the

Open House!

Sunday, September 9, is the last day that school supplies for backpacks will be collected; a box for the

collections will be located in the parlor. The packs themselves are being sewn together thanks to the

volunteer work of our very capable seamstresses Char Grant and Judy Peterson. After the backpacks have

been assembled and the needed school supplies have been added to them, they will be given a blessing at

worship services before they are sent off to Lutheran World Relief.

Please note: The Greater Area FM 2018 CROP Walk will be held on Sunday, October 7. The Walk will begin

at 1:30pm at the UCC Church 406 8th St. S. in Moorhead. Speak to Allan Peterson at 282-4644 for more

information about the Walk.
