As the leading supporter of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in the world, Sun has many efforts underway to educate the world (especially students), about the benefits of FOSS and how it is Changing (Y)our World.

Mission StatementTo grow a vibrant community of student developers around Open Source technologies.

Open Source University Meetup (OSUM) Program DescriptionYour OSUM is an on-campus community (club) that educates students about the importance of FOSS and the latest Open Source technologies and communities supported by Sun. OSUMs provide students with training in cutting edge technologies in demand by the IT industry, access to resources to advance their careers and the opportunity to make friends through engaging and fun technology-based activities.

We call it a "Meetup" because the nature of the open source world is community and collaboration. You are encouraged to "Meetup" with existing student groups and share the benefits of Sun's open source technologies and student resources to create an even stronger open source community at your university.

All OSUMs are connected to each other via a global online community that enables students to interact with other students passionate about FOSS at their university, in their country or around the world. The global OSUM Community is also the host site for your OSUM webpage. More importantly, it is a social networking site that makes it easy for technical students to connect and collaborate with each other.

Benefits of OSUM MembershipStudents at your university will reap substantial benefits which include:

● Hands- on training via Tech Demos and Student Projects to learn technologies that can lead to promising careers in the IT industry1

● Ready access to free and low-cost student resources, such as the SAI (free training and discounted certification)

● Make lots of like-minded (technical) friends through the Sun OSUM global community● Have access to a variety of Sun OSUM events such as Software Freedom Day, University Day, etc.

1 Hands on Tech Demons are administered by a OSUM member who learns the technology via attendance of webinars.

How to Start your On-Campus OSUMWith some planning and a little work, starting a OSUM should be a fairly easy and a fun task. Below are some suggested steps to guide you in starting your OSUM.

Step1 - Ask for your school's requirementsIf you decide to organize your Sun OSUM as a formal, separate student club, find out your school's requirements for setting up a new club. Most schools are very welcoming to clubs so the process should not be too hard.

Step2 - OSUM AdvisorRecruiting a faculty adviser or sponsor is generally considered a "best practice". Some universities may require one. Even if not required, a faculty adviser can be an important resource and provide credibility for your OSUM.

Step3 - Recruiting MembersRecruit your OSUM charter members. These are your friends who will serve as the initial group of students that will help you get started with organizing your activities. Before you start recruiting additional members, make sure to get permission to post notices announcing the new OSUM around campus, and include yourself as a contact person for interested students.

Step4 - Set Up your 1st MeetingSchedule your first meeting to discuss the activities your OSUM. Don't forget to reserve a room/place to hold your first meeting. Use this time to try to focus on a direction of the club:

Set up times of your monthly meetings Establish goals Examples:

Every quarter/semester, we will add 20 new club members All our club members will be Sun Certified before graduation

Step5 - Structure of Your OSUMSet up a structure for your OSUM. This can be as formal as electing officers or simply deciding who will be responsible for what. Recommended officers for your club:

President - As a OSUM Leader, you can be a co-president of the club and your counterpart can be the future leader of the club for the following year.

Scribe or Historian – This person will be responsible for capturing all the activities that your club performs throughout the academic year. This officer could also be responsible for taking pictures of your events and help the President (Campus Ambassador) with activity blogs online.

Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) Secretary – This person will be responsible for ensuring that all club members can the full benefits of the online training and certification discount that SAI provides. If your Sun Club establishes a goal around SAI – this officer can track your club's progress towards establishing the goal.

The OSUM Online Catalog is one our ways of providing support to your on campus OSUM group. There are few important things to keep in mind when using the OSUM Online Catalog:

Shipping Information:1. Shipping Address - Provide accurate and correct shipping information. Shipping Address is the address by which you would like to receive your materials. We ship materials world-wide (because as you all know, OSUM is global) and if we do not have the correct or the detailed shipping information, it may delay delivery of your order. You can use the text field to provide extra shipping information that may help us ship or find your address so that your order can be delivered.

2. Your Phone Number - Provide true and correct phone number. The delivery vendor will only call you if they need assistance in finding your shipping address - if the delivery vendor can't contact you, your order may be returned to us and you will not have the material you ordered.

3. Time Management - Keep in mind the shipping and delivery time when requesting your materials. We ship materials from the United States, so if your OSUM Group is located in Italy, it might take two (2) to three (3) weeks before you receive your materials. Be sure to give yourself and our delivery vendor enough time to get your materials to you for your event. As part of the OSUM Affiliate Program, you can order materials for your once (1x) a month OSUM Meetings.

Eco-Friendly:As much as we want to spread the world about Open Source and Sun Technologies, we also want to be eco-friendly. A bulk of the materials that can be ordered on the OSUM Online Catalog are made of paper. We encourage you to order only what you need, this is both economical for us and our common eco-responsibility for our world.

Subject to Availability and Approval:All materials on the OSUM Online Catalog are subject to availability and approval - this means that the items you order from the catalog will need to be approved. We will approve orders only from OSUM groups that are part of the Affiliate Program. We will approve orders only for th quantity that is close to your OSUM Group online membership, for example if you order 500 pens but only have 2 members, we will contact you and request for justification, otherwise it will not be approved. Lastly, the materials are subject to availability - if we run out of materials we will do our best to replenish the materials or replace the material with something else equally useful for your OSUM group.

Next Steps:Send the OSUM team an email at [email protected] to request for your access to the OSUM Catalog.

You can find the list of Self-Paced Learning resources under the 'NOTES' Section of the OSUM community – Titled:Learn Java, NetBeans, OpenSolaris and More!
