Technical safety

The refrigerant circuit has been checked for leaks. Therefrigeration appliance complies with all current local and nationalsafety requirements.

This refrigeration appliance contains the coolant Isobutane(R600a), a natural gas which is environmentally friendly. Although it isflammable, it does not damage the ozone layer and has a lowergreenhouse effect than some other refrigerants. The use of this coolant, however, leads to a slight increase in thenoise level of the appliance. In addition to the noise of thecompressor, you might be able to hear the coolant flowing aroundthe system. Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided, but it does notaffect the performance of the refrigeration appliance. When transporting and installing the refrigeration appliance, ensurethat no parts of the cooling circuit are damaged. Leaking refrigerantcan damage the eyes.In the event of any damage:

– avoid any flames or anything which creates a spark

– disconnect the refrigeration appliance from the mains electricitysupply

– ventilate the room where the appliance is located for severalminutes, and

– call Miele.

The more coolant there is in a refrigeration appliance, the largerthe room should be in which it is installed. In the event of a leakage,if the appliance is in a small room, there is a danger of combustiblegases building up. For every 11 g of coolant at least 1 m3 of roomspace is required. The amount of coolant in the appliance is statedon a data plate inside the appliance.

To avoid the risk of damage to the appliance, make sure that theconnection data (fuse rating, frequency and voltage) on the dataplate corresponds to the household supply. Check that this is thecase before connecting the appliance. Consult a qualified electrician if in any doubt.

The electrical safety of this appliance can only be guaranteedwhen correctly earthed. It is essential that this standard safetyrequirement is met. If in any doubt please have the electricalinstallation tested by a qualified electrician.

Reliable and safe operation of this appliance can only be assuredif it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.

If the connection cable is faulty, it must only be replaced by aMiele approved service technician in order to avoid a hazard.

Do not connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply by amulti-socket unit or an extension lead. These do not guarantee therequired safety of the appliance (e.g. danger of overheating).

If moisture gets into electrical components or into the mainsconnection cable, it could cause a short circuit. Therefore, do notoperate this refrigeration appliance in areas which are exposed tomoisture (e.g in a garage or laundry).

This appliance must not be installed and operated in mobileinstallations (e.g. on a ship).

Do not use a damaged appliance. It could be dangerous. Checkthe appliance for visible signs of damage.

For safety reasons, this appliance may only be used when it hasbeen fully installed.

During installation, maintenance and repair work, the appliancemust be disconnected from the mains electricity supply. It is onlycompletely isolated from the electricity supply when:

– the mains circuit breaker has been switched off, or

The appliance is designed for use within a certain climate range(ambient temperatures) and should not be used outside this range. The climate range for your appliance is stated on the data plateinside the appliance. Installing it in a room with too low an ambienttemperature, e.g. a garage, will lead to the appliance switching offfor longer periods, with the result that it cannot maintain the requiredtemperature.

To ensure proper air flow in and out of the appliance, theventilation gaps in the appliance and built-in structure must not becovered or blocked in any way. This would also increase the energyconsumption and could cause damage to the appliance.

If storing food which contains a lot of fat or oil in the appliance orthe appliance door, make sure that it does not come into contactwith plastic components as this could cause stress cracks or breakthe plastic. Make sure that no fat or oil leaks onto the plastic parts ofthe appliance.

Risk of fire and explosion! Do not store any explosive materials orproducts containing flammable propellants (e.g. spray cans) in therefrigeration appliance. Electrical components can cause flammablemixes of gases to ignite.

Danger of explosion! Do not operate any electrical equipment (e.g.an electric ice cream maker) inside the appliance. Danger ofsparking and explosion.

Food stored for too long may present a risk of food poisoning.Storage times will depend on several factors, including the freshnessand quality of the food, as well as the temperature at which it isstored. Using the refrigerator efficiently

34

Different storage zonesDue to the natural air circulation thereare different temperature zones in therefrigerator.

Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowestsection of the appliance. Make use ofthe different zones when placing food inthe appliance.

Useful tip: To allow air to circulateefficiently, do not pack food too closelytogether in the refrigerator.

If there is insufficient air circulation, the cooling performance willdecrease and energy consumptionwill increase.Do not cover the fan in the rear wallof the appliance.

Useful tip: Do not store food in such away that it touches the rear wall of therefrigerator. It may freeze to the backwall.

This appliance has DynaCool, whichhelps to keep an even temperaturewhen the fan is running. WhenDynaCool is operating, the differencebetween the various zones is lesspronounced.

Warmest area

The warmest area is located in the topsection of the main storage area andthe door. Use this for storing butter sothat it remains spreadable and forcheese so that it retains its flavour.

Coldest area

The coldest area in the refrigeratorsection is directly above thePerfectFresh zone dividing plate and at

the back of the appliance. Thetemperature in the PerfectFresh zonecompartments is even colder.

Use these areas in the refrigeratorsection and in the PerfectFresh zone forall delicate and highly perishable food,e.g.

– fish, meat, poultry

– sausage products, ready meals

– dishes or baked goods containingeggs or cream

– fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza orquiche dough

– soft cheese and other dairy products

– pre-packed vegetables and otherfresh food with a label stating itshould be kept at a temperature ofapprox. 4 °C.

Food which is not suitable forstorage in the refrigeratorNot all food is suitable for refrigerationat temperatures below 5 °C because itis sensitive to cold. Depending on thetype of food, the appearance, consistency, flavour and/or vitamincontent may be altered if stored at toocold a temperature.

Foods which are sensitive to coldinclude:

– Pineapples, avocados, bananas, pomegranates, mangoes, melons, papayas, passionfruit, citrus fruitssuch as lemons, oranges, mandarines, grapefruits

– Fruit which is not yet ripe

Page 35: Operating and installation instructions Refrigerator

Using the refrigerator efficiently

35

– Eggplants, cucumbers, potatoes, capsicums, tomatoes, zucchini

– Hard cheeses, e.g. Parmesan,mountain cheese

Notes on buying foodThe freshness of the food when it is firstplaced in the appliance is the mostimportant factor for how long it staysfresh. Freshness is essential for a longshelf life.Take into account the use-by date andthe correct storage temperature.Time out of the refrigerator, e.g.transporting food in a warm car, shouldbe kept to a minimum.

Useful tip: Take a cooling bag whenshopping, and load food in theappliance as soon as possible.

Storing food correctlyEnsure that food stored in therefrigerator section is in packaging orcovered properly (some exceptionsapply in the PerfectFresh zone). This willprevent food smells from affecting otherfoods, food from drying out, and alsocross-contamination of bacteria. This isespecially important when storing meatproducts.By ensuring that the temperaturesettings are correct and by takingappropriate hygiene measures, you canprolong the storage life of your foodconsiderably.

Page 36: Operating and installation instructions Refrigerator

Storing food in the PerfectFresh zone

36

The PerfectFresh zone provides idealstorage conditions for fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and dairy products. Foodstays fresh considerably longer whileretaining both flavour and vitamins.

The temperature in the PerfectFreshzone is controlled automatically andmaintained at 0 to 3 °C. While lowerthan the temperature in a conventionalrefrigerator, this is the optimumtemperature range for storing fresh foodwhich is not sensitive to cold. Thedeterioration process is decelerated atthis temperature range so food can bestored without loss of freshness forconsiderably longer.

The humidity level in the PerfectFreshzone can also be regulated to suit thefood being stored. Food retains its ownmoisture if stored at a higher humidityand does not dry out as quickly. Thisallows it to stay crisp and fresh forlonger.

Remember that the freshness of thefood when first placed in theappliance is the most important factorin determining how long it will stayfresh.

Take food out of the PerfectFresh zoneapprox. 30 to 60 minutes before usingit. The aroma and taste do not fullydevelop until the food has reachedroom temperature.

The PerfectFresh zone isdivided into twocompartments:– The upper dry compartment has a

temperature of 0 °C to 3 °C and thehumidity is not increased.Use this compartment to store fish, meat, dairy products and all kinds offood, provided that it is wrapped.

– The lower humidity controlledcompartment (or compartments, depending on model) has atemperature of 0 °C to 3 °C, and thehumidity level is increased dependingon the position of the slide control: not increased, or increased. With increased humidity use thiscompartment to store fruit andvegetables.

Page 37: Operating and installation instructions Refrigerator

Storing food in the PerfectFresh zone

37

Dry compartment The dry compartment is suitable forstoring perishable foods such as:

– Fresh fish, shellfish and crustaceans

– Meat, poultry, sausages

– Deli salads

– Dairy products such as yoghurt, cheese, cream, quark etc.

– Any type of food can in fact be storedin this compartment, as long as it ispackaged.

The most important aspect of the drycompartment is its low temperature. The humidity level is similar to that in aconventional refrigerator.

Please note that foods rich in proteindeteriorate faster than others.Shellfish, for example, deterioratesfaster than fish, and fish deterioratesfaster than meat.

For hygiene reasons always keep thesefoods covered or wrapped.

Humidity controlledcompartment , The humidity controlled compartmenthas a slide control which is used toregulate the moisture in thiscompartment.

Slide the regulator to the or humidity setting.

Page 38: Operating and installation instructions Refrigerator

Storing food in the PerfectFresh zone

38

If you are not satisfied with yourstored food (for example the foodwilts or becomes limp after only ashort storage time), check thefollowing:

Only place fresh food in the applianceas the initial condition of the food iscrucial to maintaining freshness.

Clean the PerfectFresh compartmentsbefore storing food in them.

Dry the surface of very moist foodbefore placing it in the refrigerator.

Do not store any food in thePerfectFresh zone which is sensitiveto cold (see “Food which should notbe stored in a refrigerator”).

For the type of food being stored, select the correct PerfectFreshcompartment and the appropriateposition of the slide control for thehumidity controlled compartment (lowor high humidity).

An increased humidity level in thehumidity controlled compartment isachieved by the moisture present inthe food being stored, i.e. the morefood stored in the compartment, thehigher the humidity. If too much moisture has gathered onthe floor of the compartment and thisis affecting the food, select the setting. Otherwise dry the floor andunderneath the lid with a cloth andplace a rack or similar item in thecompartment so that excess moisturecan drain away.If the humidity level becomes too low, wrap the food in airtight packaging.

If you think that the temperature inthe PerfectFresh zone is too high ortoo low, try regulating it slightly firstby changing the temperature by 1 or2 °C. If ice crystals start to form onthe floor of the PerfectFreshcompartments, increase thetemperature as otherwise the coldtemperature will damage the food.

Furniture door

Horizontal and vertical gaps

The thickness and edge radius of thefurniture door and the gap that runsaround the door, vertically andhorizontally, are specified depending onthe style of kitchen furniture.

It is essential to pay attention to thefollowing:

– Horizontal gap

The gap between the furniture door andthe kitchen unit door above or below, respectively, must be at least 3 mm.

– Vertical gap

If the gap between the appliancefurniture door and the adjoininghousing unit door or wall on thehinged side is too small, theappliance door could collide with theadjoining housing unit door or wallwhen opened. It may be necessary to adjust thesize of this gap to suit the thicknessand edge radius of the appliancefurniture door.

This must be taken into considerationwhen planning your kitchen and whenreplacing an old appliance with a newone to ensure the installation conditionsrequired are met.

Electrical connectionThe appliance is supplied with a mainscable and moulded plug ready forconnection to an AC single-phase 220–240 V 50 Hz supply.

The fuse rating must be at least 10 A.

This appliance must be connected to asuitable switched socket. The electricalinstallation must be in compliance withcurrent local and national safetyregulations.

The socket must not be concealedbehind the appliance and must beeasily accessible so that the appliancecan be quickly disconnected from theelectricity supply in case of anemergency.

If the socket is no longer accessibleafter installation, an additional means ofdisconnection must be provided for allpoles. Suitable means of disconnectioninclude switches with an all-polecontact gap of at least 3 mm. Theseinclude isolator switches, fuses andrelays.

The mains plug and mains connectioncable must not come into contact withthe back of the appliance as vibrationscan cause damage to thesecomponents. This could result in a shortcircuit.

Nor should other appliances beplugged into a socket located directlybehind this appliance.

Do not connect the appliance to themains electricity supply using anextension lead. Extension leads do notguarantee the required safety of theappliance (e.g. danger of overheating).

Do not connect the appliance to astand-alone inverter such as those usedwith an autonomous energy source, e.g.solar power. When the appliance is switched on,power surges could result in a safetyswitch-off. This could damage theelectronics. The appliance must not beused with so-called energy-savingdevices either. These reduce theamount of energy supplied to theappliance, causing it to overheat.

If the mains cable needs to be replaced, this must be done by a qualified andcompetent electrician.
