Drinks parameters

Brewing temperatureThe ideal brewing temperature willdepend on

– the type of coffee being used,

– whether an espresso or a coffee isbeing made, and

– the altitude of the region.

If the coffee machine is located at morethan 2000 metres above sea level, thebrewing temperature needs to be setlower due to the change in pressure. This is because the boiling point forwater at a high altitude above sea levelis lower than the boiling point for waterat sea level.

Tip: Not all types of coffee canwithstand high temperatures. Certaintypes are too delicate - the crema ontop would not be as good and the tastewould be impaired.

The coffee machine has five brewingtemperatures.

Pre-brewing the coffeeWhen the pre-brewing function isswitched on, the freshly ground coffeeis first moistened with a little hot water. Then the remaining water is forcedthrough the moistened coffee at highpressure. This helps release the flavourof the coffee.

You can set pre-brewing for a short orlong length of time, or deselect " Pre-brewing " altogether. The machine is supplied with the "Pre-brewing" function switched off.

Unsatisfactory results

Problem Cause and remedy

The coffee is not hotenough.

The cup has not been pre-heated.The smaller the cup and the thicker its sides, themore important it is to pre-heat it.

Pre-heat the cups, e.g. using the cup heating(depending on model).

The brewing temperature has been set too low. Set a higher brewing temperature (see "Brewing

temperature").The filters in the brew unit are blocked. Remove and clean the brew unit by hand (see

"Remove the brew unit and wash by hand"). Degrease the brew unit (see "Degreasing the brew

unit").

The heating-up time isgetting longer, theamount of water beingdispensed is incorrectand the coffee machineis not performingproperly.

The coffee machine needs descaling. Descale the coffee machine.

The consistency of themilk froth isunsatisfactory.

The milk temperature is too high. Good milk froth canonly be achieved when cold milk (below 10°C) isused. Check the temperature of the milk in the milk flask.

The milk pipework is blocked. Clean the central spout with integrated

cappuccinatore and the milk pipework with thecleaning brush supplied.

The coffee grindermakes a louder noisethan usual.

The coffee bean container has become empty duringthe grinding process. Fill the container with fresh beans.

There may be stones in amongst the coffee beans. Switch the coffee machine off immediately. Call

Miele.

Page 82: Operating instructions Coffee machine - Miele

Problem solving guide

82

Problem Cause and remedy

The crema on thecoffee or espresso isnot as it should be.

The grinder setting is not correct. Set the grinder to a finer or coarser setting (see

"Grinder setting").The brewing temperature is too high for this type ofcoffee. Set a lower brewing temperature (see "Brewing

temperature").The coffee beans are stale. Add fresh coffee beans to the coffee bean

container.

The coffee tastes weak. The coffee grounds inthe waste container aresludgy and grainy.

Insufficient coffee beans are getting into the grinderand less ground coffee is being brewed. If you haveused a dark roast, this type of coffee bean is oftenmore oily. These oils can cling to the inside of thecoffee bean container and hinder the flow of beans. Make a coffee and observe whether the coffee

beans drop into the coffee bean container. Clean the coffee bean container more often if you

are using a darker, more oily bean.

Try other types of coffee bean which are less oily.

Page 83: Operating instructions Coffee machine - Miele

Transporting the machine

83

If you are not going to use the coffeemachine for an extended period of time,e.g. whilst on holiday, or if it needs tobe moved, a number of procedures willneed be carried out to ensure its safety.

– Empty and clean the coffee beancontainer

– Empty and clean the water container

– Evaporate the coffee machine

– Clean the drip tray and wastecontainer

– Pack the machine securely

EvaporationThe coffee machine should beevaporated before it is stored for a longperiod of time or transported anydistance - particularly at temperaturesbelow freezing.

Evaporating the machine involvesremoving all traces of water from thesystem to prevent the risk of water andfrost damage.

Start in the Drinks menu.

Caution. Danger of burning andscalding from hot steam coming outof the hot water spout.

Touch .

Select Settings and then Service.

Packing the machineThe coffee machine should only bepacked when it is clean and dry.Residues of coffee grounds can causescratches on surfaces. Coffee and milkresidues or water can cause a build-upof bacteria.

Use the original packaging includingpolystyrene blocks to pack the coffeemachine.

Also pack the operating instructions sothat they are available when the coffeemachine is next used.

Electrical connection

86

All electrical work should be carried outby a suitably qualified and competentperson only, in strict accordance withcurrent national and local safetyregulations (BS 7671 in the UK).Installation, repairs and other work byunqualified persons could bedangerous. The manufacturer cannotbe held liable for unauthorised work. Before connecting the machine makesure that the voltage and frequencyquoted on the data plate are compatiblewith your household electrical supply. Please consult a qualified electrician ifyou are in any doubt.

The required connection data is quotedon the data plate. This can be seen onthe left-hand side when the drip tray ispulled out.

The machine is supplied with a mainscable with moulded plug for connectionto a 50 Hz 220–240 V supply.

The coffee machine must be connectedto the mains supply via a fused plugand suitable switched socket.

WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUSTBE EARTHED.

The fuse rating must be at least 10 A(13 A fuse in the UK).

The socket should be next to theappliance and easily accessible. If thesocket is not accessible an additionalmeans of disconnection must beprovided for all poles.

Do not connect the machine to themains electricity supply by a multi-socket adapter or an extension lead. These are a fire hazard and do notguarantee the required safety of theappliance.

Do not connect the machine to aninverter such as those used with anautonomous energy source e.g. solarpower. When switched on, peak loadsin the system can cause the safetyswitch off mechanism to be triggered. This can damage the electronic unit.

The coffee machine must not be usedwith so-called energy saving deviceseither. These reduce the amount ofenergy supplied to the machine causingit to overheat.

If the connection cable is faulty, it mayonly be replaced by a qualifiedelectrician in order to avoid a hazard.
