LANGHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL The children are now well and truly into the 2015-16 academic year, with the new Reception Class settling in. Real ballot boxes were used for the School Council election, when all the pupils voted for representatives to voice their ideas and help with decisions in the school. The school supported Tools With A Mission (see Page 5) at Harvest Thanksgiving time with gifts of used household and garden tools for refurbishment and passing on for further use by needy people in Africa and Asia.

CHURCH XMAS BAZAAR Anyone wishing to donate items for sale, give raffle prizes or to help on the day of the Christmas bazaar (see Page 1) is asked to contact Jos Carter on 272755 or the Whybrows on 272773.

On 21 September Langham Oaks student Nick Oxley (above, 2nd from right) presented the “School Anti-Bullying App”(SABA App) to HRH the Duke of Cambridge at Hammersmith Academy. Nick is a member of a small team of student software developers that has benefited from the ex gratia support of Suffolk software firm CODERUS. CODERUS contacted the Langham Oaks School after a group of its boys appeared on BBC TV Look East to describe the concept they had developed in conjunction with the Diana Award (with the objective of allowing young people to report bullying discreetly, using digital devices) and to recount the difficulties they envisaged in making the concept a reality. Since then, the boys, CODERUS and the Diana Award, working in close partnership, have succeeded in their joint effort and the ‘App’ is ready for release in November. Nick Oxley and other Langham Oaks students will then be presenting it to children and industry professionals at a conference in London during Anti-Bullying Week. For more information on this inspiring partnership, visit:

LITTLE OWLS PRE-SCHOOL Little Owls is exceptionally busy this year and places for the remainder of it are very limited. The Pre-school is fully committed to ensuring that Boxted children have access to a place in the village. Children are taken from the age of two, from 9.15 am to 3.15 pm, Monday to Friday in term time. There is also an ‘Early Bird’ session from 8.45 am. If you have a baby or toddler and will be wanting a place, please contact Little Owls as soon as possible so that priority can be given to Boxted children. Email:

DISCOVERING RICHARD III At a very well attended September meeting of the Boxted History Group, Dr John Ashdown-Hill gave a most enthralling account of the search for King Richard II’s remains. Dr Hill, a historian who had successfully identified the descendants of the King’s sister, joined Leicester University’s “Find Richard III” group in 2003. Legends and records were conflicting but indicated that the remains were buried at one of two Grey Friars churches in the Leicester area. After much research, the group began excavating an area of a car park where one of the churches had been situated. At Dr Hill’s instigation, a second trench was dug and a skeleton was exposed which was proved by forensic examination and DNA checks with the descendants identified by Dr Hill to be that of the lost King.

Some of the many useable but unwanted tools collected in Boxted, Langham, Great Horkesley and West Bergholt for refurbishment and transport to Africa to support self-sufficiency projects. Tools with a Mission have expressed their thanks for the great response from the four villages. LANGHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Items from the 7 October meeting

Hornestreet Field The Council has been asked if it is interested in taking over responsibility for the Field (see Page 4). Borough Council grants It was stated that the annual grants to parish councils to compensate for the lack of facilities and services compared with those in the Town were being phased out. Faster Broadband BT provisionally estimates the cost of upgrading the Ardleigh and Dedham phone systems at £21-24,000 for the former and rather more for the latter. The upgrade would take a year from order to completion. Housing Essex County Council is offering the unoccupied Oaks houses to the Borough Council. For more information, contact the Clerk to the Parish Council.

There subsequently broke out a furious and well-publicised argument as to where the remains should be appropriately reinterred, Leicester Cathedral being eventually chosen. Sadly, the choice seems to have been a commercial rather than historical one—one may now buy Richard III chocolates! Dr Ashdown-Hill was this year appointed MBE in recognition of his contribution to this out-standing archaeological project.
