The 2016-17 edition of the Boxted & Langham Directory is scheduled for inclusion with the July/August issue of the Newsletter. Clubs and other organisations in the two villages are asked to check their entries in the current edition and inform the Newsletter Editor (see below) of any necessary amendments by
Wednesday 8 June.
Immediately following the Group’s AGM in April, Nick Sign traced the life of John Winthrop (1588-1649), the first Governor of Massachusetts in what is now the USA. Winthrop was born at Edwardstone, Suffolk, into a family of newly-risen gentry who had acquired the Manor of Groton at the dissolution of the monasteries. His father was a lawyer and prosperous businessman in London. Winthrop entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he began to embrace Puritan ideas; soon after going down he married into a prominent Puritan family. He
became established in London as a lawyer but remained an affluent landowner at Groton. However, Charles I’s increasingly severe policy towards recusants and a reduced income through poor harvests and an economic slump drew him to the Massachusetts Bay Company and he was elected the first Governor of the planned Colony in New England. He set sail for America in April 1630 as the leader of 700 mainly Puritan emigrants from East Anglia, Lincolnshire and the West of England. The Colony was initially established at Charlestown but after the first year was removed a few miles away to a new settlement, which was named “Boston”. Winthrop served as Governor until his death in 1649. Winthrop’s life and the founding of Massachusetts is the background to Douglas Carter’s book “Boxted Migration”, which records the part played by Boxted people in this historic episode. Copies of the book are still available, at £10 each from Stephen Whybrow:

BAGS OR BINS: RECYCLING & WASTE SERVICES CONSULTATION
There is very little time left for people to make their views known to Colchester Borough Council on refuse collection and recycling arrangements. An important issue is the question of whether collections should be by bags, as at present, or by “wheelie” bins, as has often been suggested. We have until 3 June to complete the online survey at
www.colchester.gov.uk/recyclingsurvey The survey is comparatively easy to complete.

THE EVERGREENS The Boxted Evergreen Club has for many years offered companionship and enjoyable activities, mainly (but not exclusively) to older people. The Evergreens meet every fortnight at Boxted Village Hall, where they listen to talks of interest or enjoy performances by talented local entertainers. There are lively parties at appropriate times of the year and memorable lunches, especially at Christmas-tide and the New Year. This year they have enjoyed or are looking forward to enjoying a number of great days out. There is a visit to charming Woodbridge in May, the party calling at the famous Notcutts’ Garden Centre on the way home. On 6 July there is an expedition farther afield, to Wroxham, with an optional 2 hour cruise on Wroxham Broad. The basic charge is £20, with the boat trip an additional £10. For details of the Evergreens and their activities, contact Linda Tralau on 272710.
BOROUGH COUNCILLORS At the Borough Council elections three Councillors were elected to represent the residents of the eleven parishes making up the awkwardly-named Rural North Ward, which stretches around the north of Colchester town from Dedham in the north-east to Wakes Colne in the west. Those elected were all previously serving Councillors: Christopher Arnold Manor Close, Great Horkesley Tel. 01206 271128 Nigel Chapman Straight Road, Boxted Tel. 01206 272908 Peter Chillingworth Oak Farm, Wakes Colne Tel. 01206 240230

LANGHAM COMMUNITY SHOP
It is well worth calling in at the Langham Community Shop to inspect the wide range of goods and services offered. There are many unusual items, from light bulbs to paint brushes, stationery to haberdashery, as well as a big range of items that include fresh bread, cereals, fruit and vegetables, local honey and eggs, beer and wine and newspapers. There is a particularly wide and attractive range of greetings cards for every occasion. The prices are surprisingly competitive, comparing favourably in some cases, believe it or not, with Colchester supermarket prices. It is often more advantageous to call in at the Shop for odds and ends than to travel three or more miles to a supermarket. The car park is of course free and you don’t have to spend time looking for a space. The Shop is also a convenient place to obtain refuse/recycling bags and bins to replace lost or damaged ones. And there are the friendly volunteer members of staff, who, being mainly local people, can not only tell you exactly what is going on in Langham and elsewhere but direct visitors to sought-for addresses. The Shop is open at these hours:
Monday to Friday 8.45 am to 5 pm
Saturday 8.45 am to 1 pm
Sunday 9.30 am to 11.30 am A Post Office Outreach service operates at the Shop on Monday and Thursday mornings from 9 am to 12.30 pm. All Royal Mail services are available, such as Vehicle Excise Duty (“car tax”) payments, fishing licences and so on. Packages for Parcel Force are accepted and banking facilities for most UK banks are offered.

BOXTED WI Members of the WI and their guests were delightfully entertained at the April Open Meeting by Lorraine Pendleton and “Bellydanza” The troupe gave an account of the origins and history of the belly dance (in Arabic, ‘Raqs Beledi or Raqs Sharqi’) and its earlier and present-day social significance. There followed a vibrant and colourful performance of the troupe’s impressive repertoire. The refreshments were of a suitably Middle Eastern flavour and the evening was rounded off with a ‘workshop’, in which the members participated en masse amid fun and laughter.
THE LATE RUSSELL SUTTON Christine Sutton expresses her heartfelt thanks to all the people of Boxted and Langham for their love and support for her since her husband’s death.
PROBUS CLUB The Probus Club of Colchester offers retired or semi-retired professional or business men congenial fellowship among its members and the opportunity to develop acquaintanceships. The first Probus Club was formed in Welwyn Garden City in 1965, having its origins in the local Rotary Club. Clubs have since proliferated world-wide and there are now some 2,000 of them in the United Kingdom. There are two in the Colchester area, the other being Colne Probus. They are both men-only, although many other Probus Clubs are mixed and some are women-only. Colchester Probus meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, with a break in the summer. There is an interesting talk at each meeting: “The History of Magic”, “London Underground Architecture” and “Nature in Essex” are examples. Last year’s Summer outing was to Sheffield Park and the Bluebell Railway and this year it is to the scenes of the Midsomer Murders TV series—Dorchester and Goring in Oxfordshire. The annual President’s Lunch always has an entertaining speaker. Anyone interested in joining is invited to contact the President, Geoff Nudds, on 01206 323380 (Email sgnudds@outlook). Or speak to the Secretary, Chris Rose, on 01206 240426 or email him at [email protected]. Probus members living in Boxted or Langham are Keith Middleton (272774), Andrew Stacey (272806) and Ian Hollands (230525), who would be pleased to tell more.

JUNE DIARY
The speaker in May was Gary Egerton, who told excellent stories of his time in the Police. They ranged from being a rookie asked to deliver sad news to guarding VIPs while in the Special Branch. He spoke also of occasions when, despite timetables and rehearsals, somebody—Margaret Thatcher or just a driver—could do something unexpected and throw the whole security plan into chaos. At the Annual Meeting, all the committee and officers were re-elected. It was noted that there had been no fewer than ten outings, including two each to theatres and open gardens.
150 WI ladies from Ardleigh, St John’s, Boxted, Mile End, West Bergholt and Horkesley were the guests at a wonderful ‘Theatre’ evening. The hall was decorated in ruby and gold, with glittering wall decorations lit to create a real theatre ambience. Many ladies were wearing sparkling masks. A Mercury Theatre team explained the demands of production planning and described disastrous moments.
NEWSLETTER ADVERTISING MANAGER
Scott Dolling, who last year took over the Newsletter’s advertising side from the late Christopher Garnett, is reluctantly obliged to step down from this vital role. His prospective retirement means that successors to both Ian Hollands as Editor and Scott as Advertising Manager must be found. Anyone interested in taking on Scott’s job is asked to contact him by phone on
273886 (evenings) or by Email at
boxlangads @outlook.com
Ian Hollands is happy to field enquiries during the day.
It is a plain fact that, without both an editor and regular income from advertising, the Newsletter will cease by the end of 2016.
LANGHAM WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
T h e t e a m brought along a number of props, one of which was bleeding all too realistically.
Refreshments included hand made mask-shaped chocolates for everyone. Keith Arrowsmith came from Sheffield to conduct a fun quiz and to judge the entries for decorated evening masks.
