1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

Product overviewH5410 Crop MergerThe H5410 crop merger combines swaths to efficientlymatch windrow width and density with forage harvesteror baler capacity.

The economical, center pull H5410 has a merging capa-bility of 2.7 - 3.6 m (9 - 12 ft). An optional 0.6 m (2 ft)extension can be added to merge a 4.3 m (14 ft) cut area.The H5410 can be operated using a 52 kW (70 Hp) trac-tor with two rear hydraulic remote valves.

A floating pickup features replaceable, three prong teethto deliver crop evenly to a 1067 mm (42 in) wide ribbedconveyor. For smooth crop flow, the pickup and conveyorspeed adjust simultaneously. A tall, back conveyor panelensures that all of the crop is collected and merged intothe windrow. An anti-wrap system on the conveyor bear-ings prevents crop from wrapping and damaging the bear-ing seals.

All New Holland mergers are designed to merge crop tothe right. However, by using the optional inverter chuteand switching the two quick-connect hydraulic hoses, thedirection of the merging crop can be quickly reversed tomerge to the left and invert the crop.

The two standard gauge wheels can be adjusted to fieldconditions or crop height by simply removing and rein-stalling two pins. For better handling in rough field con-ditions and road transport, the rear tire swivels and has abrake, which prevents the wheel from shimmying.

2 - SAFETY INFORMATION

Ecology and the environmentSoil, air, and water are vital factors of agriculture and life in general. When legislation does not yet rule the treatmentof some of the substances which are required by advanced technology, common sense should govern the use anddisposal of products of a chemical and petrochemical nature.

NOTICE: The following are recommendations which maybe of assistance:

• Become acquainted with and ensure that you understand the relative legislation applicable to your country.

• Where no legislation exists, obtain information from suppliers of oils, filters, batteries, fuels, antifreeze, cleaningagents, etc., with regard to their effect on man and nature and how to safely store, use and dispose of thesesubstances.

• Agricultural consultants will, in many cases, be able to help you as well.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Avoid filling tanks using cans or inappropriate pressurized fuel delivery systems which may cause considerablespillage.

• In general, avoid skin contact with all fuels, oils, acids, solvents, etc. Most of them contain substances whichmay be harmful to your health.

• Modern oils contain additives. Do not burn contaminated fuels and or waste oils in ordinary heating systems.

• Avoid spillage when draining off used engine coolant mixtures, engine, gearbox and hydraulic oils, brake fluids, etc. Do not mix drained brake fluids or fuels with lubricants. Store them safely until they can be disposed of ina proper way to comply with local legislation and available resources.

• Modern coolant mixtures, i.e. antifreeze and other additives, should be replaced every two years. They shouldnot be allowed to get into the soil but should be collected and disposed of properly.

• Do not open the air-conditioning system yourself. It contains gases which should not be released into the at-mosphere. Your NEW HOLLAND AGRICULTURE dealer or air conditioning specialist has a special extractorfor this purpose and will have to recharge the system properly.

• Repair any leaks or defects in the engine cooling or hydraulic system immediately.

• Do not increase the pressure in a pressurized circuit as this may lead to a component failure.

• Protect hoses during welding as penetrating weld splatter may burn a hole or weaken them, allowing the loss ofoils, coolant, etc.

Hydraulics

WARNINGEscaping fluid!Relieve all pressure before disconnectingfluid lines or performing work on the hydraulicsystem. Make sure all components are ingood condition and tighten all connectionsbefore pressurizing the system. DO NOT useyour hand to check for leaks. Use a piece ofcardboard or paper.Failure to comply could result in death or se-rious injury.

W1140A

There are four hydraulic hoses from the merger to thetractor. The two smaller, ( 9.5 mm (0.375 in) diameter)hoses provide oil to the pickup lift cylinder (1).

The two larger ( 12.7 mm (0.5 in) diameter) hoses pro-vide oil to the hydraulic motors (2) running pickup beltand cross-conveyor belt. Controlling speed of belts isdone by adjusting oil flow at the tractor remote (if possi-ble) or by adjusting the tractor throttle*. Coordinate speedof belts with ground speed of tractor. To reverse directionof cross conveyor change hydraulic quick couplers at thecross-conveyor drive motor (3). A flow of 60.6 l/min (16US gpm) and pressure of 13790 kPa (2000 psi) is rec-ommended to operate the merger efficiently.

*For those tractors without adequate hydraulic flow for re-mote valve operation, a dealer-installed hydraulic pumpdrive kit (self-contained hydraulics) is available; see page7-1. A pump is installed on the tractor PTO, and oil flow topick-up head and cross conveyor is regulated by tractorRPM; however:

On units outfitted with the self-contained hydraulic system(PTO pump), the tractor engine/PTO should not be oper-ated at full speed. The pump for this system has beenpurposely oversized to allow for a reduction of tractor en-gine speed to increase efficiency. It is recommended toreduce the engine speed approximately 30 % from therated PTO speed setting in order to obtain a PTO speedof 370 RPM.

NOTICE: Operating a merger equipped with a self-con-tained hydraulic system at the rated tractor engine speedof obtain 540 PTORPMwill cause the hydraulic oil to over-heat. Permanent damage to hydraulic components willoccur as a result of this action.

4 - TRANSPORT OPERATIONS

Installing the socket

Use the tractor wire diagram or, if necessary, use a testlight to identify the tractor wires. Connect the wires to thesocket as follows:

Pin Connector ID Attached To1 White (WHT) Ground wire, all lights2 Black (BLK) Not Used3 Yellow (YEL) Left side amber light4 Red (RED) Brake lights5 Green (GRN) Right side amber light6 Brown (BRN) Taillights7 Blue (BLU) Not used

StandardSAE J560 provides that the number 4 conductor(red wire) socket of the propelling vehicle is connected tothe brake light circuit so that the brake lights activate whenthe brake pedal is depressed.

Most tractors are wired to provide the brake light signalthrough the number 4 pin in the connector socket. Sometractors may not provide this capability. On these tractors, the brake lights on trailing implements will not function;however, hazard, turn, and tail lamps will function.

19987865 2

NOTE: On some tractors, the Number 4 pin in the socketis utilized for other functions. Therefore, this circuit maybe on all the time or any time the key switch is on. Thiswill cause the trailing implement brake lights to be on allthe time.

If you have one of these tractors, the brake light circuit canbe disabled by disconnecting the bullet connector locatedin the wire harness where it attaches to the lighting controlmodule (1).

NOTICE:When you later reattach the machine to a stan-dard electrical socket on propelling vehicle, the brake lightcircuit must be reconnected to function.

NOTICE: If this machine is to be transported on the high-way, the propelling vehicle must be equipped with theappropriate electrical socket so that the implement lightsfunction.

5 - MAINTENANCE

EVERY 8 HOURS OR DAILY

Lubrication pointsThere are eighteen grease fittings on your merger. If these are lubricated properly and often enough, it will prolongthe life of the merger. Grease daily during normal use, and before and after storage. Use a good grade of high qualitygrease. Make sure grease comes out around the shaft on sleeve type bearings. On the sealed ball bearings, greaseshould be added slowly until a slight bead forms at the seals indicating the correct amount of lubricant. Wipe offexcess grease to prevent accumulation of grit around the bearings. Lubricate merger more often with extensive use.

Adjustments

Tail wheel adjustmentThe tail wheel is located at the right rear of the merger.Located on the tail wheel pivot spindle is an adjustablebrake assembly. Adjust brake by tightening bolt (1). Thebrake should have enough tension to prevent shimmying, but still allow the wheel to pivot when making corners. Im-proper adjustment will cause severe tire wear and damageto merger.

93097011 1

Pickup adjustmentPickup belts are adjusted by adjusting the take up bolt(1) located on both ends of the pickup bottom roller. Thebearing bracket bolts (2) must be loosened before adjust-ment, and tightened after the desired belt tension is at-tained. Proper belt tension will be achieved when 38 mm(1.5 in) of slack can be pulled in the center of the beltswith minimal resistance. DO NOT tighten pickup belts ex-cessively. Overtightening may cause damage to belts orrollers. Loose belts will cause unnecessary tooth wear andbreakage.

93097012 2

Pickup head adjustmentThe pickup head should be adjusted according to theheight of the stubble. Pickup height is adjusted by adjust-ing the gauge wheels located at both sides of the pickuphead. Remove adjustment pin (1) and place in the desiredhole position above the gauge wheel arm. Lower head andcheck for proper adjustment. Repeat process if necessary.Teeth should never be closer than 19 mm (0.750 in) fromthe ground. When proper adjustment is obtained, removepin (2) and place in hole as close as possible below gaugewheel arm to support gauge wheel when raising head.Excessive tooth wear and breakage will occur if teeth aretouching the ground. Adjust both sides equally.
