Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies (LEIP)

Policy context and objectives This part of Horizon 2020 focusses on:• new opportunities for industrial leadership in ICT, • the mastering and deployment of key enabling technologies, and • space. These are areas of industrial key competences which determine Europe’s industrial capacities and global competitiveness, and their generic nature enables new business opportunities in a variety of sectors and for innovative SMEs. Aiming at new and breakthrough technologies, this part of the programme will contribute to boosting competitiveness, creating jobs and supporting growth. In this context it will help to achieve the EU Industrial policy goals and represents an important component of the EU Strategy for Key Enabling Technologies (KET).

applications and contribute to solving societal challenges; and they have an inherent ability to enable advances in all industries and sectors.

To develop materials with new functionalities and improved in‐service performance, for more competitive and safe products that minimise the impact on the environment and the consumption of resources.

To secure Union leadership in this high growth global market, by stimulating scientific and technological advancements and investment in nanotechnologies and their uptake in high added‐value, competitive products and services across a range of applications and sectors.

The specific objective of advanced manufacturing and processing research and innovationis to transform today's manufacturing enterprises, systems and processes. Objectius:

This challenge is driven by the vision that cutting edge‐biotechnologies are paramount to assure that the European industry is to stay at the front line of innovation, also in the medium and long term. Among cutting‐edge biotechnologies, synthetic biology has a high potential to influence, or even transform a range of areas of our economy and society. In terms of supporting tools, progress in bioinformatics is critical to avoid clear‐cut limits on the ability to realize the full value of biotechnology. These fields deserve appropriate measures in terms of research and development to facilitate effective transfer and implementation into new applications.

Pilar/s d’Horizon2020: Space

Objectius:Space research is supported in Horizon 2020 under the heading "Industrial Leadership", in line with the main objective and challenge to foster a cost‐effective competitive and innovative space industry (including SMEs) and research community to develop and exploit space infrastructure to meet future Union policy and societal needs.

The work programme has been structured to address these roles by• Prioritising the three EU Space flagships of European Global Navigation Satellite System (EGNSS), Earth Observation and Securing Europe's investment in Space against threats, ensuring their state‐of‐the‐art also in the future;

• Ensuring that industries’ leadership in space can still be maintained and enhanced in future global markets, by boosting the Space industry sector competitiveness, and innovation capacities;

• Ensuring that Europe’s investments made in space infrastructure are exploited to the benefit of citizens, as well as space science; and

• Enhancing Europe’s standing as attractive partner for international partnerships in space science and exploration.

What does "Access to risk finance" mean in the Horizon 2020 context ?

Using part of the Horizon 2020 budget to stimulate moreinvestment in research and innovation not through grants butin the form of Financial Instruments:

o Debt finance

Loan finance, i.e. risk-sharing loans to companies and for innovative projects introducing new technologies

Guarantees to financial intermediaries (commercial and development banks) that provide loans to research- and innovation-driven SMEs and small mid-caps

o Equity finance

Equity, i.e. venture capital for newly created companies exploiting R&D results
