WEEKLY YARD WASTE COLLECTION CO Alarms Are Now Mandatory D id you know that 60% of Canadians do not have a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm installed in their house and 44% do not have their heating systems checked annually? Not surprisingly, more than 50 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning in Canada, including 11 on average in Ontario. These statistics are about to change as Ontario enforces mandatory CO alarms, the new CO law – Bill 77, The Hawkins-Gignac Act, ensuring that our families and homes are safe. As of October 15th, it is now required to have CO alarms in every household in the province, regardless of its age. The timing coincides with the onset of winter when CO poisoning is a higher risk. During the colder season, we spend more and more time indoors increasing our use of gas heaters, fireplaces, and other gadgets to beat the cold. Without proper maintenance, appliances such as furnaces, clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, barbecues, and gas ranges can produce CO from the incomplete burning of fuels such as natural gas, wood, propane, heating oil, kerosene, coal, or charcoal. Plus, CO leaks are undetectable. It is a poisonous gas you cannot see, taste or smell and is often referred to as the “silent killer”. It causes flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, burning eyes, confusion, drowsiness, and even loss of consciousness. In very severe cases, CO poisoning can result in brain damage and death. Here are some helpful tips to help you comply with the new law, but most importantly to keep your family safe: All homes, of any age, with either oil, propane or gas burning appliances, furnace or water heater, a wood or gas fireplace, or an attached garage or carport, must have at least one working carbon monoxide alarm installed outside of sleeping areas. Like smoke alarm laws, home owners who do not have a CO alarm installed can be fined. CO alarms come with an expiry date. Check alarms already installed, especially those before 2008, as they need to be replaced every 7-10 years depending on the brand. Replace batteries in your CO alarm annually, or opt for models with 10-year sealed lithium batteries that never need to be changed. Have a licensed technician check your fuel burning appliances (ie: furnace, fireplace, water heater) annually, to ensure they are in proper working order and vented correctly. Carbon monoxide alarms needs to be installed near all sleeping areas. In multi-unit residential buildings, they also need to be installed inside service rooms. Any time you suspect CO in your home - maybe someone is experiencing symptoms or your CO alarm sounds - leave the home immediately and call 911 or your local fire department. Common Causes of CO Leaks Fuel-burning appliances, venting systems, and chimneys not maintained by a qualified service technician or heating contractor A chimney blocked by a nest, snow or debris Improper venting of a furnace and cracked furnace heat exchangers Exhaust fumes seeping into your home from a car running in an attached garage Using fuel-burning appliances like barbecues, lanterns, lawnmowers, in an enclosed space like a tent, cottage, workshop, or garage Combustion gases spilling into a home if too much air is being consumed by a fireplace or exhausted by kitchen/bathroom fans in a tightly-sealed house Don’t Miss the 2014 Barrie Arts Awards Gala! Water Main Flushing in City’s North EndThe City of Barrie is performing water main flushing at just over 1800 hydrant locations throughout the City’s North end for the next 6 to 8 weeks. Southern borders of the work area being Edgehill Dr, Wellington St West, and Blake St respectively; city limits to the North, East and West complete the boundary of the work area for this program.

In addition to witnessing crews flowing water at fire hydrants, residents and businesses may experience some water discoloration for short durations as flushing crews move through their work areas. In those instances these guidelines should be followed:

• Turn on a cold water tap and let the water run for a few minutes.• Do not choose a tap that has a water filter connected to it, or the sediment

WEEKLYYARD WASTECOLLECTION

CO Alarms Are Now MandatoryD id you know that 60% of Canadians do not have a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm

installed in their house and 44% do not have their heating systems checked annually?

Here are some helpful tips to help you comply with the new law, but most importantly to keep your family safe:

• All homes, of any age, with either oil, propane or gas burning appliances, furnace or water heater, a wood or gas fireplace, or an attached garage or carport, must have at least one working carbon monoxide alarm installed outside of sleeping areas.

• Like smoke alarm laws, home owners who do not have a CO alarm installed can be fined.

• CO alarms come with an expiry date. Check alarms already installed, especially those before 2008, as they need to be replaced every 7-10 years depending on the brand.

• Replace batteries in your CO alarm annually, or opt for models with 10-year sealed lithium batteries that never need to be changed.

• Have a licensed technician check your fuel burning appliances (ie: furnace, fireplace, water heater) annually, to ensure they are in proper working order and vented correctly.

• Carbon monoxide alarms needs to be installed near all sleeping areas. In multi-unit residential buildings, they also need to be installed inside service rooms.

• Any time you suspect CO in your home - maybe someone is experiencing symptoms or your CO alarm sounds - leave the home immediately and call 911 or your local fire department.

Common Causes of CO Leaks

• Fuel-burning appliances, venting systems, and chimneys not maintained by a qualified service technician or heating contractor

• A chimney blocked by a nest, snow or debris

• Improper venting of a furnace and cracked furnace heat exchangers

• Exhaust fumes seeping into your home from a car running in an attached garage

• Using fuel-burning appliances like barbecues, lanterns, lawnmowers, in an enclosed space like a tent, cottage, workshop, or garage

• Combustion gases spilling into a home if too much air is being consumed by a fireplace or exhausted by kitchen/bathroom fans in a tightly-sealed house
