See the World, Earn Your DegreeThe benefits of studying abroad have been described in many words. Life changing. Unforgettable. Transformative. It’s true! Opportunities to gain an in-depth and experiential knowledge of Indian history or learn about Ghanaian culture not only enhance your academic and professional pursuits, but enable you to experience the world from an entirely different perspective.

The Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Evquity, and Multicultural Affairs (OVPDEMA) strives to provide greater access to study abroad opportunities so that you can explore new cultures, gain insight about the global community, participate in new educational experiences, and enjoy a lifetime of benefits.

There are literally hundreds of overseas study opportunities available at Indiana University. Programs, which range from one week to an academic year, offer students the chance to study in more than 50 countries, in nearly all majors, and earn university credit.

As an OVPDEMA student, you can choose from several custom study abroad programs, plus take advantage of scholarship opportunities to help you on your international journey. Whether you’re looking for an OVPDEMA custom program, a departmental program, or something else, you’ll find options that meet a variety of academic interests and needs.

For a complete list of overseas study opportunities, visit the IU Office of Overseas Study at overseas.iu.edu.

Discover Your Study Abroad OpportunitiesOVPDEMA collaborates with IU’s academic departments and the Office of Overseas Study on study abroad programs that are tailored to the academic interests of students and fulfill the diversity and inclusion goals of OVPDEMA. For example, OVPDEMA’s programs may include a focus on diversity, involve issues of social justice and responsibility, and emphasize multiculturalism, globalization, cross-cultural understanding, race, human rights, the African diaspora, and the history of slavery.

Currently, OVPDEMA offers three custom study abroad programs that rotate each year: Study Abroad Program to Ghana; Study Abroad Program to India; and Study Abroad Program to the Dominican Republic.

Students who are selected take classes on campus during the spring semester and travel abroad for two weeks in the summer. As part of the program, they will earn three IU credits, as well as automatic scholarships to cover the majority of expenses and hands-on support throughout the process.

Interacting with people of various nationalities was an amazing experience because it showed me how much we have in common, even more than our differences.

As a minority student, I had the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and adapt to a very different environment. It is my hope to give back by encouraging students like me to partake in these opportunities.
