Opportunity Knox
Fort Knox has witnessed many new buildings and construction projects in the last few years. Family and MWR has been anticipating the construction of a the new School Age Center (SAC) for several years. A brand-new facility, Building 4251, is now open and located directly behind the current Child Development Center on Bullion Blvd. The groundbreaking for this facility was on April 16, 2010, and after about 14 months of construction, the facility was signed over to the installation on June 14, 2011. After the process of moving in the furniture, equipment, supplies and materials provided by the Department of Defense was completed, the facility was opened for children on August 22, 2011.
The School Age Center oers programs before school, after school and during summer breaks and interces-sions. Spending time in a school age program oers children opportunities to make new friends, improve their grades, develop relationships with caring adult role models and build self-esteem and conict resolution skills. The new SAC provides much needed space to oer a variety of activities which address the whole child: activities that respect and reect the culture/interest of the children, the visual and performing arts, technol-ogy, science exploration, special interests, clubs, dance, sports, etc.
“The new facility is large and it will help our school age children to better experience the responsibilities of independence within a safe environment," said Rayceil Oggs, Chief of Child, Youth and School Services. “This new state-of-the art facility will impact positively on the lives of many children today and in the many years to come.”
Family and MWR is very excited about this new facility and all the new amenities that it now provides to the children of the community. Child, Youth & School Services began its service journey back in the early 1990’s when it was housed in Stevens School. That facility was not designed for childcare, however, the sta worked to make it a beautiful facility that met the children’s needs. CYSS soon reached on another obstacle. The child enrollment outgrew the Stevens facility, therefore CYSS partnered with Van Voorhis Elementary School for more space. These combined facilities allowed service to be provided for 105 children.
It was very important to CYSS to be able to provide a new School Age Center to be able to get the children and sta in one place and have a facility that was modern and up to date on equipment, furniture and materials. The new facility was to give school age children and their Families a safe, attractive, state-of-the-art school age center that would support health, tness, social and life skills and hands-on learning opportunities for school age children. The Fort Knox Families deserved this facility.
“Our sta and children love the new facility. We have separate rooms for each activity, which allows us to provide better quality of care,” said Sandra Hinerman, the Director of the School Age Center. “We are now serving 195 children with a waiting list.”
The School Age Center is open Monday-Friday from 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Children must be registered with CYSS. For additional information, please call (502) 624-6703 or visit www.knoxmwr.com.
