ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

FERNANDO ORTIZ What is your current position? Director, Counseling Center at Gonzaga University.

What does this job entail ? As a psychologist, I provide counseling to undergraduate and graduate students, crisis interventions and consultations to university community, and preventive and proactive outreach programs. I serve as a consultant and resource person for faculty and staff regarding the mental health of individual students and the factors affecting the adjustment and mental health of the student population. More specifically, I worked collaboratively with offices, colleagues, campus departments and students groups contributing to student success and engagement. As a supervisor, I supervise master level interns/trainees, and psychiatric residents currently serving our students through a joint program at the University of Washington and Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, WA. As an administrator at a Catholic University, one of my functions is to have a strong commitment to the university’s Catholic, humanistic and Jesuit mission. I have to provide a vision and demonstrate a collaborative leadership for our diverse team of counselors and ensured the development and implementation of best practices in Counseling Center programs and services. This entails risk management, integrity and ethics while navigating challenging issues affecting our student population and the context of higher education. Some of the more administrative tasks entail the management of departmental budgets and resources, the development and implementation of relevant policies and procedures, and the coordination and collaboration with other departments to ensure a collaborative, comprehensive, and high quality continuum of services. Our Center also collects data both for research purposes, and for administrative reports and outcomes. I supervise this data collection coordination effort. Recently, I have participated in two task forces, one created by our President to address ethnic and cultural needs of the university, and in the second task force to investigate the wellness needs, programs and services. Currently, I am not teaching. I was an assistant professor, however, prior to this clinical and administrative position at the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology at Alliant International University (2006-2009). I taught personality assessment, introduction to psychotherapy, multicultural development competencies, and a dissertation research group.

What do you like most about this position? My current job has allowed me to fulfill my identity as a counseling psychologist. Intrinsic to this identity is the use of individual, group, and community interventions for emotional, behavioral, vocational, and mental health problems. In my multifaceted role as an administrator, consultant, counselor, and leader, I have been able to use preventive, developmental, and remedial approaches and interventions to serve the counseling needs of students and the pop-ulations we help at the Counseling Center. I recently came across a statement in one of the publications of the American Psychological Association noting that psychologists’ have the noble calling “to elevate the human condition.” I find my work at the Counseling Center very much contributing to the betterment of the human condition. More specifically, the Jesuits use the concept of cura personalis (“care of the whole person”) and this is one of the values and rewards that inform what I do – striving to care for the whole personhood of the clients I serve.

What advice do you have for students seeking a similar position ? Doctoral students undergo a gradual evolution and formation of their skills and competencies through the experiences of training, research, supervision, consultation and coursework. These major academic, supervisory, and training influences are essential for anyone seeking out a similar position at a Counseling Center. To the extent that one is able, I would advise doctoral students to achieve both depth and breadth in their counseling skills and competencies.

Any other accomplishments or thoughts you would like to share with current and alumni students? Personally, I am married to my wife, Christi, and we have two children, Emmanuel (5 years old) and Grace (6 months). Primary over my professional accomplishments, my family matters the most to me. We live in the country side, on the outsides of Spokane, surrounded by beautiful nature, and where we also enjoy the company of our two dogs: Sapphire, a German Rottweiler, and Shelby, a mixed Mexican Chihuahua (interesting, multicultural dyad! – Shelby was born in Mexico, I may add!). As a relatively new family, we spend a lot of time together sharing previous moments. Emmanuel is a very curious boy, and he loves story-telling, especially bedtime stories. He has assumed the role of big brother and watching him interact so gently and lovingly with Grace is extraordinary. Moments with family reorient them to what is truly meaningful and transcendental. I have come to believe that we define ourselves primarily by our authentic and loving relationships with others. In a prior life I was a seminarian studying to join the Catholic priesthood, and I am very active in religious ministry. As a person who continues to discern what spirituality and religiosity means to the person, I recently completed a second masters degree in religious studies with an emphasis on Mexican spirituality. This was a truly, transformative experience for my own development as a Mexican person of faith. I continue to explore what culture and faith means for some of my students and incorporate what I have learned through my education in counseling.

ALICIA DEL PRADO

What is your current position and where? I am an assistant professor at the Wright Institute in the clinical Psy.D. program. I am also a licensed psychologist in California. What does this job entail? In my role at the Wright Institute, I teach classes, serve on dissertation committees, and mentor students. Currently, I am chair of the program's Diversity Committee. I also have a part time private practice. What do you like most about this position? The Wright Institute has a practitioner-scholar model of training, and so they value

their faculty doing clinical work in addition to teaching. This approach is a good fit for my professional interests because it encourages me to where the "two hats" of teaching and individual therapy, both of which I enjoy doing very much. The Wright Institute also has a mission of "clinicians to society" which aligns with my

personal and professional commitment to multiculturalism in psychology. What advice do you have for students seeking a similar position ? The dissertation can be a wonderful stepping stone to your

chosen career path. I have been asked multiple times to speak about my dissertation topic (which was on an enculturation scale for Filipino Americans), and I believe it has positively contributed to my early-career professional identity. So, when deciding upon what your dissertation will be, I advise "choose wisely". : ) At the same time, there are ideas I was interested in pursuing for dissertation that I did not do, and post-graduation I've had the opportunity to revisit and research them. So, I would also add, "there is life after graduation" and ideas that did not get to materialize can be returned to later.
