sustiain note for the approximate length of beam
quick arpeggio betweenbridge and tailpiece, on allstrings

slight swell within dynamic range
decresendo to n.
Program NotesOptic thought is based on the concept of the mirage, a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays are bent to produce a displaced image of distant objects or the sky. The cause of this phenomenon is the difference between the air temperature and surface temperature. Since cold air is more dense than warm air, it has a greater refractive index, or “speed of light”. When the temperature on the surface is warmer than that of the air above it, it causes light rays to bend upward toward the temperature gradient. The eye interprets this as a body of water, or a reflection of the sky on the ground. The closer one gets to the “point of mirage”, the illusion dissipates.
For the piece, historical information was retrieved from a weather database. I chose a specific day for data extraction - a day that I personally experienced numerous mirages on i-95 - Alligator Alley - in South Florida. For pitch material, I took the average of the temperature in the lower stratosphere (-76 degree F and -80.5 degrees F. = -78.25 degrees F) and the average surface temperature for that day, 81 degrees F. The numbers from the date [4-31-2011] were also used. An aggregate [0, 1 ,2 3, 4 ,5, 7, 8, e] was formed from this information and used serially throughout the entire piece in any place pitches are employed. Various sections that utilize the information related to mirage causing conditions are sharply contrasted by sections in which no pitch material or data is used compositionally. Frequencies are audible in these sections, but are indeterminate, causing the aggregate itself to relate to the ear in the same way that a mirage would relate to the eye.
