To start...

• Optimising is the process of making your CD run as efficiently as possible by keeping the file size down!

• Can you name two benefits from this?

Page 3: Optimise Multimedia Elements Assessment Objective Four

Reasons

• If you are creating a web-based presentation, a large file takes longer to download than a small file. An inefficently organised presentation will unnecessarily increase the time it will take users to access our product.

• Saves space

How to Optimise

• Consider how often we use elements, i.e. a standard Home button rather than a different home button for every page.

• Making a file size as small as possible. The basically reduced the amount of information

Dimensions

• Ensuring the height and width isn’t unnecessarily large.

• This will then lower the data required.

• Provide evidence that you have considered dimensions when creating your elements. Screenshots and supporting descriptions

Compressions

Resolution

• Provide evidence that you have considered resolution!

• A screenshot of the resolution of any graphics or video clips with an explanation would be good

Page 8: Optimise Multimedia Elements Assessment Objective Four

Frame Rate

• With some basic flash animations they run at 12 frames per second, so a 5 second clip is 60 frames.

• Therefore fewer frames = less space

File Formats

• Different formats deal with the data differently.

• .jpgs hold data differently to .bmps

Page 10: Optimise Multimedia Elements Assessment Objective Four

Exporting

• Roughly the same as previous• Different video formats handle data

differently • .mov• .avi• .mp4

Page 11: Optimise Multimedia Elements Assessment Objective Four

Task

• Review the elements you have created and optimise them.

• Provide clear and valid reasons why you have optimised each element each way you have

Assessment Guidance

• Pass – Evidence of some optimisation will be present

• Merit – Most multimedia elements will be optimised effectively with some appropriate reasons given

• Distinction – All multimedia elements will be optimised effectively with clear and valid reasons given for decisions.
