Oracle Virtualization StrategyDesktop To Data Center Virtualization

• Virtualization offers key cost savings benefits

– Server consolidation

– Lower energy, facility and labor costs

• Oracle’s virtualization strategy offers much more

– Most comprehensive desktop to data center product portfolio

– Integrated management of the full hardware and software stack from applications to disk

– Integrated support

• Virtualization that makes software easier to deploy, easier to manage, and easier to

support

– Not Virtualization for Virtualization’s Sake

Storage Considerations For Your

Virtual Environment

• Will I need less storage?

• Will my applications run faster?

• Will I be more efficient?

• Will managing the storage be simpler?

Storage Silos or Application IO Clobbering

• SLAs demand a required level of application performance

• Traditional storage arrays provide static performance levels

• VMs must be segmented to different storage arrays

• VMs will compete with each other for IO

Which do you prefer?

Virtualized environments need predictable performance

levels that can adjust with growth or changes in SLAs.

Scale Up or Scale Out

• Traditional storage arrays only scale to about 40% of capacity

before performance is maxed out

• Two controller storage arrays don’t scale for performance without a

forklift upgrade

• A failed component can affect the performance of multiple VMs

But not both

Virtualized environment’s capacity needs will expand and

contract as new VMs are added and others are moved.

Vendor Sprawl

• Purchasing, maintenance and training for multiple systems becomes

very complex

• Compatibility issues are more prevalent since testing is difficult

• Expenses rise without adequate economies of scale

A necessary evil?

Most virtualization strategies rely on multiple hardware

and software vendors to provide a complete architecture.

Storage in a Virtual Environment

• The storage sees all VM’s the same

• Contention is created

• SLAs are missed

The Traditional Approach

Storage in a Virtual EnvironmentThe New Flexible Approach

• Storage attributes and priorities mapped to the virtual machine

• Different service levels allocated for VM images, SWAP files, data etc

• Different media and protocols for test, production & backup

Oracle VM Storage Resource ManagementJust about any storage from the GUI…• NFS, FCP/SAN, iSCSI…

• Volumes, files, LUNs…

• Local or remote…

• Support heterogeneous configurations

• Share storage between multiple pools and clusters.

• Ability to share raw device between VMs

Storage Connect Plug-Ins for Management…• Exposed, operated from the Manager UI

• Oracle and 3rd party storage

• Advanced storage functionality

• Thin provisioning, cloning…

• Optional delegation of actions to virtualization admins

More than just provisioning…• Create LUNs or Volumes

• Expand LUNs or Volumes

• Associate, share with VMs
