Warehouses are at the convergence of demand and supply chains. Therefore,

warehouse management is critical to demand and supply management.

Complex warehouse operations must adapt quickly and easily to changes.

Oracle Warehouse Management System (WMS) brings operational flexibility

via its rules-based architecture. Each enterprise configures rules to support

their unique business processes. As needs change, these rules are re-

configured to support new business processes. When new large-scale

changes are required, WMS delivers a complete integration framework that

supports all emerging technologies including voice RFID, and integration to

    automated material handling equipment.

Customers demand the goods they want, when they want them, in perfect

condition and to their unique specifications. Warehouses must handle

more items, with greater velocity, and in smaller order quantities. To address

these challenges, businesses need a robust and scalable solution. Oracle

offers a broad range of materials management functionality from basic to the

most advanced warehousing capabilities (see highlights below) to improve

operations, and reduce overall warehousing and distribution costs.

Oracle Inventory is useful in relatively lower complexity warehouses with low volume of material transactions. It is typically deployed in a desktop environment away from the actual point of use. For more complex environments, you need a real-time transaction execution system offered by Oracle WMS and MSCA.

    Mobile Supply Chain Applications (MSCA)

Oracle MSCA provides features over and above the desktop-based functionality provided by Oracle Inventory by enabling support for mobile transactions using handheld devices. With increasing transaction volume and order complexity, Oracle MSCA supplements Oracle Inventory. It takes Oracle Inventory to the next level by barcoding and label printing capabilities.

    Warehouse Management System

Oracle WMS is a next-generation warehousing solution, and includes an excellent task management system. It is an absolutely paper-free solution for your warehouse, and includes robust support for mobile transactions. It is capable of handling warehouse envrionments where transaction volumes are high, business process is complex and pressure is growing to improve on-time

shipments and increase profit margins. It has an auto-generated license plate number capability which groups unlike or like items based on a criteria, thus improving material traceability. The rules engine is a unique functionality that enhaces operational flexibility. The Oracle labor management feature provides valuable analytics to help distribution managers optimize their resources and track user performance. Distributed deployment of WMS is the latest capability of Oracle WMS. It helps leverage latest features in Oracle WMS with older EBS or other ERP systems. The Warehouse Control System (WCS) is an added module to Oracle WMS that facilities handling of automated equipments without human interaction. It helps warehouses achieve complete or partial automation. Oracle WMS also offers out of the box RFID functionality for very advanced warehouses.

Temporary warehouse workers can be made productive within a day since the system directs them what to do. Previously they would need to be trained in both product recognition and warehouse layout to be able to find product and pick orders. Dermot Reddin, Warehouse Manager at The Denby Pottery Company Ltd.

    Oracle WMS Highlights

Distributed Deployment of Oracle WMS: Customers can deploy WMS to power global operations independent of other enterprise systems, making it possible to leverage the latest features in WMS but with older EBS installations or other ERP systems. Distributed WMS also ensures greater availability of WMS as it is an always on solution that is unaffected by the network connection or the availability of the ERP system.

Wave Planning and Task Management: Using wave planning, Oracle WMS can fulfill a large number of orders quickly by streamlining the full execution process. Oracle WMS provides a flexible and powerful planning tool with a dashboard to create, plan and track wave progress with the ability to configure exceptions to facilitate proactive resolution of issues. It selects order lines, cartonizes (if required), and creates tasks. The task creation process considers multiple constraints, including receipt/shipment time, resource and warehouse space availability. It enhances customer service, maximizes warehouse efficiency and helps in monitoring and control.

Opportunistic Crossdocking: It is more efficient to transfer inbound material directly to an outbound area whenever possible. The use of crossdocking improves on-time shipment and saves storage and labor costs at the warehouse. Cross docking can be opportunistic (based on backordered sales orders), or planned based on crossdock criteria. Identification of a crossdocking opportunity pegs the scheduled inbound receipt to the outbound shipment. The system identifies a specific inbound receipt based on whether the warehouse wants to maximize crossdocking or minimize wait time.

Forward Pick Locations: Warehouses often face the challenge of fulfilling large number of small orders, while producing and receiving items in larger bulk quantities, e.g. pallets. Creating and designating reserve and forward pick areas helps overcome this challenge. The reserve area replenishes the forward pick area automatically based on anticipated future shortages and demand patterns. In addition, picking based on demand patterns can also incorporate sudden spikes or irregular demand. The use of a forward pick area shortens the travel time for the warehouse operator, increases on-time shipments, avoids multiple picks, and improves overall pick efficiency.

Dock Scheduling and Load Sequencing: Warehouses have limited dock doors, and use dock appointments to optimize dock usage and reduce carrier wait times. Organizations using Oracle WMS with OTM can make use of Dock Door Appointment Synchronization between the two products such that dock door appointments drive Oracle WMS execution. This also enables sequencing loads in reverse stop order to increase trailer loading and unloading efficiency.

Rules Engine: At its core, Oracle WMS has a flexible and powerful business rules engine. The rules engine permits extensive tailoring of key Oracle WMS processes such as directed picking and put-away, without customization. This tailored decision process can reference any data point within the data model.

Built-in and not Bolt on Architecture: Oracle WMS executes directly on the same data as the rest of the E-Business suite application. This built-in approach avoids data duplication, transaction latency, additional hardware and middleware costs, as well as complex and costly integrations associated with a traditional bolt-on WMS system.

  • Voice Picking: Voice picking increases operator productivity as it enables a hands free transaction confirmation platform. Oracle WMS supports speech recognition capability with a customizable setup for various languages. It is architected to seamlessly work with a wide variety of voice solutions and provides tremendous flexibility to deploy a voice solution that is better aligned with business needs

RFID Enabled: RFID allows automatic identification of entities with help of specially encoded electronic tags. This technology can automate data and event capture in the warehouse, eliminating the need for the operator to interact manually with the system. Oracle WMS includes RFID capabilities including support for RFID readers, tag labeling etc. Several key transactions are enabled for RFID such as shipment and receiving. In addition, integration framework exists to allow entire business flows to be fully automated using sensor devices.

Customer Labeling Compliance: Labeling compliance standards define the bar code symbologies, label format, usage, and also specify mandatory data fields. Oracle WMS provides robust label printing functionality that is fully compliant with current UCC/EAN standards. Generation of Serial Shipping Container Codes and printing of UCC-128 labels - with 856 transaction set in ANSI-X12 - is standard functionality.

Integration with Material Handling Equipment: Oracle WMS includes a material handling device integration toolkit. This kit provides the functionality to integrate the WMS with material handling devices such as conveyors, carousels, pick-to-light systems, and automated storage and retrieval systems. It enables Oracle WMS to export information to the material handling device and receive completed information back to Oracle WMS. It can automate the material handling activities in the warehouse and streamline the often-complex integration with material handling equipment and automation systems.

Robust Mobile Transaction Support: Oracle WMS is designed from the ground up to leverage the efficiency and accuracy of mobile hand-held computers and bar code scanning. The open-standard-based Oracle mobile solutions will support any mobile computing device. Mobile transactions do not required third-party support.

Mobile UI Personalization: The mobile screen layout and process is one of the most often customized parts of a WMS. Efficient and flexible mobile transactions reduce data entry errors and allow faster information flow. Standard configuration forms allow users to personalize Oracle mobile transaction screens and enable this streamlining process. This greatly reduces or even eliminates - the need for mobile forms customization.

Support for Manufacturing, Assembly and Distribution: Oracle WMS provides a seamlessly integrated system for all manufacturing execution processes including repair and maintenance business processes. Oracle WMS supports component picks for discrete jobs and schedules, ingredient picks for process manufacturing batches, parts picks and maintenance work orders and repair orders generated in Enterprise Asset Management or Depot Repair CONTACT US For more information about Oracle Warehouse Management Solutions, please visit http://www.oracle.com/applications/order_mgmt/warehouse.html or call +1.800.ORACLE1 to speak to an Oracle representative.
